It’s a wonderful … Pet?

It's a wonderful … Pet?
By Bill Clanton of All Pets Radio (www.allpetsradio.com)
Inspired by Natercia Clanton and Jimmy Stewart.
Isn't it funny how we don't realize what we have until it's gone. Like the parent who pushes the kids off to college only to suffer from empty nest syndrome a week later, or like the guy that sells his hot rod only to spend the rest of his life drooling at ever car show in town. Wouldn't it be nice if you could have someone show you in advanced the consequences of your actions or show you what the world would be should you never have been born?
Just think for a moment, it's evening, you're just getting home from work. You enter the house to be greeted by your family, but there is only one exception, there are no pets. No one ever thought to domesticate dogs, cats, fish, hamsters, and even snakes. So you say your hellos and then start to get ready for dinner. You're then told how your son is having difficulties in school because he doesn't communicate well with others. Mom and Dad were always working and without that pet to interact with he just kept to himself.
After dinner you sit in front of the television. You drape you arm over the side of the chair, but there's no fur rubbing against your hand. No dog to curl up at your feet. No cat curling around your neck. Then the phone rings, it's your sister. She's calling you because she's alone and needs someone to talk to, because she doesn't have those fish, an African Grey, or that lovable French Bulldog to talk to. She tells you about her blind neighbor who needs to have someone guide her around.
The morning comes as scheduled so you get up grab your shower, eat breakfast, and you're out the door. Wait, what's this, no morning jog? But you need to get that body weight down. Oh, wait, there was no dog to walk to give you that extra push to get out and get moving. You then turn on the radio to hear reports of wild dogs terrorizing the public, and uncontrollable amounts of wild rabbits causing numbers of auto accidents.
Finally you come home for lunch. The house is empty. The silence is maddening, you could really use someone to talk to or curl up on your lap. But that would be silly, because animals don't belong in doors, and animals are dangerous. As you sit there in your cold, quite house, you realize how truly alone you are. Then your silence is broken by the sound of your PDA chiming with a reminder that you need to see your Psychiatrist today. Hopefully he will find the root to your depression. As you walk out the door you think, "There must be something missing!" Suddenly you wake up to the feeling of a wet nose poking your face, a purring in your ear, and you breath a sigh of relief that it was only a nightmare.
How much would you miss pets if you sudden found yourself in a life with out them? Doesn't it make sense to enjoy every minute we can with them? So today take some time and just think about what your life would be without your pets. If you don't have a pet, just dialup your local shelter or rescue. Together we all can see to it that we never have to live a life without PETS!

What Makes a Pit Bull a Pet

Category: Pets and Animals
What Makes a Pit Bull a Pet?
By Bill Clanton of All Pets Radio (www.allpetsradio.com)
The answer to that question could be the one thing that legislators all over this country need to realize. I'm not writing this to bash anyone or scream about my dislike for the way specific breeds are being treated, but I am writing this in the hopes that somewhere sometime someone who makes these decisions will read this and then consider the results of their actions.
The journey for me started just 10 months ago. I never thought I would say this but "I fell in love with a Pit Bull, an American Pit Bull Puppy named Donut to be exact." My sister had rescued this puppy, but soon after found that she could not handle the care and training necessary. So my wife and I decided to give that puppy a better home.
Before meeting Donut my opinion of Pit Bulls was negative. I had always thought of them has such mean dogs that didn't belong in a house with children. But something changed for me. Maybe it was that floppy right ear, or uncontrollable wagging tail, well no matter what it was I was in love.
Once Donut was settled in I really got to know this little guy, who was quickly becoming the big guy. I was amazed he took to training practically overnight and he was so full of love. But wait, this is a pit bull, a mean aggressive and dangerous dog, right?
I then learned that several neighbors of mine also had Pit Bulls. They too were very well behaved and very good around my son. This really got me thinking. "Is it just media hype? Where did my misconception of pit bull behavior come from?" Then I was confused even more when I heard the news of pit bulls all over being put to death just for being in the wrong city at the wrong time.
How could this happen? Let's put aside the fact that this is America and we are a free country. Those dogs didn't hurt anyone. No, this is just a knee jerk bandaid reaction to a problem that started with the owner and not the pet. I say "pet" and not "animal". (An animal is untamed and wild. A pet is a member of the family.) Responsible pet ownership is the solution to the problem. If a child mouths off to a teacher in class we say it's the parents fault, but if a dog barks and bites someone we blame the dog. Why is that? If you own a dog, care for a dog, or are just thinking about getting a dog, I urge you to take the time to train your dog properly and give them tons of love. The song doesn't just apply to people, because "Love is all you need."

Take Two Cats and Call Me in the Morning

Take Two Cats and Call Me in the Morning
By Bill Clanton of All Pets Radio (www.allpetsradio.com)

Have you ever had a "cat" nurse? No, I'm not talking about Halloween fun at the hospital. A "cat" nurse is the best name I can use to describe an amazing feline phenomenon that I have personally witnessed. They can't do CPR or take your temperature, but make no mistake your cat loves you unconditionally and it shows. It's one medicine that you won't need a prescription for.
It was almost a year ago to the date, my wife Natercia had to have ankle reconstruction surgery after a series of painful falls. The surgery was a success, however, it required my wife to be off her feet for several weeks. Just one day after the surgery I agreed to welcome 2 new family members into our home. We named them Sassy and Shadow. They were 2 of the cutest little kitties I had ever seen. As the kittens started to feel welcome in our home, and my wife adjusted to her new life of staying in bed, I noticed something truly amazing.
Sassy, the female kitten could always be found at my wife's side. I would take Sassy to another room for feeding, but soon after she was right back in bed with my wife. I asked myself, "Could this kitten know that my wife is hurt?" Sassy would not only stay by her side, but she would always know when to give that little bit of loving that she needed. Though at times it seemed like Sassy new more, almost as if she was protecting her or watching over her.
Sassy's brother Shadow also shares this magic. I had been sick with a very bad infection. The doctor had prescribed a very strong anti-biotic that caused me to sleep more than usual. Shadow never left my side, only to visit the litter box and to fulfill his craving for salmon. Having him there with me gave me a sense of security. I had been thinking that cats had this hidden nurse like tendency, but I still wasn't sure if it was just my kittens being extra loving, until my close friend Sharon had a heart attack.
Sharon is a diabetic. After having some difficulties with her sugar and insulin balance she had an episode that put her into a coma for 3 days. Doctors still aren't sure if she had a stroke or heart attack. Though once she had recovered enough to return home she was greeted by 4 of the most concerned little creatures. That first night back at home Sharon could not believe it. All 4 of her cats, which normally wouldn't go near her room at night, slept on her bed with her. She had one at her head, one at her feet and one on each side of her. They did not leave her side all night.
The next morning when Sharon's daughter stopped by to check in on her the nursing didn't stop. When Sharon's daughter sat on the bed to talk with her mother, the 4 cats stood up and acted almost as to say, "Don't get too close to our patient." They put themselves between the mother and daughter.
It has taken me some time to come to some understanding of this, but I can only say that pets communicate on a totally different level. This can also be seen in dogs that protect their owners or run to get help when their owner is hurt. I'm sure that someday science will find a way to communicate with animals. At which time a plethora of questions will be answered. In the mean time we leave it up to faith. You see, all of the cats in this story knew that their owners needed them. That is why it never hurts to have a pet or two in the family. If you too have experienced a "cat" nurse house call please tell me about it. I would be delighted to know that the Order of the Cat Nurse is alive and well in a bedroom near you.

Why The World Needs Pets

Why The World Needs Pets
By Bill Clanton of All Pets Radio (www.allpetsradio.com)
They won't hold a grudge. They won't leave you for someone else. They know how to show their affection. They even know your feelings better than you do. Who are "they"? Well "they" go by many names, but most of the world just calls them "Pets". Pets are wondrous creatures whose powers go beyond that of spiritual or magical. Perhaps that power is what the world needs more of.
Recently while being interviewed by a local newspaper reporter I was asked the question, "Why do you think that pets have become so popular in recent years?" I thought for a moment and then answered. "We are a nation at war, a nation still recovering from the after effects of September 11th, a nation rebuilding in the wake of a devastating hurricane in the South, all while living in a media spoon fed world with terror attacks in every news break." I then went on to explain the key thing that separates us from our pets. If I were to go to a human friend for emotional support, I could only expect so much. You see, they could be affected by the same negative worldly stress that depresses me. However, my pet remains unaffected. This newspaper reporter agreed with my statement and we spent several minutes talking about the idea of "unconditional love".
Unconditional love is a phrase that I have heard people from all walks of life relate totally to pets. I find it amazing that so many people with different backgrounds, cultures, and languages can come to this same agreement. When we are at our lowest of lows our pet will still be there. Pets fill the void in our lives.
Another incredible aspect of pets is in the case of loved ones away from home. While loved ones may be over seas fighting to preserve freedom, pets are fighting battles here on the emotional frontlines in our homes. Our pets are armed with the weapons of mass affection. A wet nose, a wagging tail, a friendly purr, and soft snuggly fur remain a strong hold of the pet arsenal. In a few short moments a pet can bring us from a face full of tears to a face full of cheers.
They always aim to please expecting nothing in return. I have never heard of a dog not loving his master because his master forgot say "I love you", or a cat ignoring her caretaker because they got home late from work. Wait, I am talking about cats so actual results of the previous statement may vary. My point is that we could learn a tremendous amount about humility and humanity from our pets. Humans using the powers gained by observing our pets could one day actually bring about world peace. In the mean time we take it one heart at a time.
The next time you find yourself alone, hurt, sad, or frightened, just find your furry friend, open up your heart, and let the power heal you.

Current mood: optimistic
Dear Pets Lovers,
It is a fun and exciting time here at All Pets Radio. First off we have been making some changes behind the scenes to make the programming you hear on All Pets Radio even better than before. Also our Unconditional Friends project has been going great. If you haven't checked it out yet, it is at www.unconditionalfriends.com.
One of the major highlights of September is going to be the 1st Annual Online Dog Expo taking place September 22-24 at http://www.virtualdogexpo.com. This is a one of a kind event that is as close as your nearest computer. You will have a chance to interact with various dog people to learn and celebrate just how special those four legged, long eared, tail waggin' creatures are. Plus I will be one of the featured guest speakers at the expo. For more info just click on the link on the right hand side of the All Pets Radio homepage.
Also, we again invite you to chat in our message board. This time around we want to know why you love your pet and what makes them special. Just go to www.allpetsradio.com and click on "message board", and look for the topic "I love my pet".
Finally, I will be getting more information out to you as I sort out everything that was given to me, but Tammy Grimes of Dogs Deserve Better was recently jailed for giving a very sick dog a second chance. Apparently the dog looked as if it was going to die and was left alone on a chain. After getting no response from the humane society officers Tammy took matters into her own hands to save this dog, who truly deserved better. For the full story click on this link http://www.dogsdeservebetter.org/doogie.html.
Remember pets are people too!
Thanks,
