Keep up to date with my forthcoming Mexico & USA cutting tour, by checking here:
http://web.mac.com/sfericson/Center_For_Pattern_Design/HOME.html

I'm also coming to Liverpool to do some more creative cutting demo's in September & October, to Bath Spa in November & December, to Brighton (where i now live) dates TBC, and of course the Royal College of Art in London where i am now MA Tutor for Mixed Media Textiles.
There will also be some 'Fashion in Geometry' masterclasses (or is it 'Geometry in Fashion', i can't remember!) with the Royal Institution of Great Britain this Autumn & Spring.

A BOY & A GIRL, PHOTOSHOPPED TOGETHER
Current mood: displaced
Category: displaced Life

I am very much attracted to creative people who like me cannot differentiate between performer & audience, artist & producer, teacher & student, product & market, creative & technical… who see themselves on both sides of the equation, or who mix up the binary opposites… on/off, start/finish, left/right, up/down, inside/outside, back/front.
We might not be the right people to ask for directions and wouldn't get far as bomb disposal experts, but we know exactly where things ought to be, or where instead they may look better:)

When I was a kid I was into chemistry, mixing random concoctions, creating reactions, burning things, microscopes, magnifying glasses, insects, history, kings&queens, heredity & lineage, planets, drawing cross-sections of the ocean/houses/boats/submarines, drawing plan views of battle fields, wiring circuitry in completely illogical ways, drawing very detailed objects using pixels/half-tone, dot by dot, climbing trees, football, sprinting, swimming underwater, pretending to be underwater all the time, lying on my bed on my back with my head over the edge imagining the world upside-down, mid-80's computers, translating musical manuscripts into numerical values & writing them into computer programmes, jumping off rooftops with an umbrella, writing stories, and riding my bike everywhere.
My childhood was very happy, but isn't particularly relevant to the way I design… it's a state from which I have evolved, and I don't reference it in my work. I have a tendency to forget or blank out even the recent past and to concentrate on the future and what I might possibly become. It's perhaps useful to a historian or biographer to help complete the picture of who I am, but there is too often a tendency to try to make an artist/designers childhood appear mythical. I don't agree with the notion that creative people retain a child-like perspective. It's a naïve ideal. Designers are adults, and adults have the ability to be far more wide-eyed, fantastical & idealistic than children… because they become increasingly fearless, self-motivated & reflective. Accepting responsibilities whilst simultaneously being subversive & creatively/intellectually challenging is beyond the capabilities of people who aspire to be childlike. We grow up & then we die. This is probably why I have a problem with authority & the title of 'Professor'. There's an assumption that I've achieved something and stopped growing/developing.

Fuck Me Dresses
Current mood: virginal
Category: virginal News and Politics

I propose to cut a range of very special ornate beautiful dresses, which have an inner silk lining inside them which the owner/purchaser must cut/slice through with a pair of scissors or blade in order to put the garment on, a bit like a 'seal' or 'hymen'.
This would allow costume experts and collectors to accertain whether or not the dress had ever been worn, so that's its resale value as a collectors item can increase if never before worn.
It would also allow the wearer to know for definite that they are the very first and only person to have ever worn this particular garment, by involving them in an act of garment de-flowering.

i used to love blogging
Current mood: warm
Category: Blogging

but now it's shit.
Blogging's now become like CB RADIO was after 1981's 'Convoy' movie.
people still think it's 'hi-tech', that it's somehow 'progressive' because it incorporates technology into communication, but nothing of any interest is actually being said on the airwaves.
It's all just white noise, buzzwords & bollocks.

So,
i'm not posting blogs or reading them like i used to, cos they don't really interest me any more.
Also, i'm not really using MySpaz much, i don't know many people who are.
Instead i can be found on Facebook, which is marginally better for keeping in touch with people i know, and those interested in the work i do:
