Poems For the Dutch Masters

This will be a work in progress.  Anyone can make suggestions on these words.  A live, perpetual editing experiment, if you will.  As I write more for this series, more will be added to this page, so check back when you can.

This work is not meant to contain any correct history or geography of the Netherlands or the Dutch Masters, just to employ it all as the palette of inspiration.

Thank you for reading,

Warren Jackson Hearne

Eerste

The milkmaid pauses
From her work
Common face engaged
Straddled by the fairest hair
Filled in its smiling cap

Is her bodice
More tightly woven?
Been stealing
Milk again
Missus will have noticed

She pours concise,
Clean milk into the bowl
Pensive overseer
Arms steady as Sigyn's
Careful not to spill

Lovingly, she cocks
Her flushing neck
Slices up the bread
Masterful arranger
In a squeaky basket

This is for the Missus son
This is for his lunch
Into a hungry belly
With butter and jam
Foot cream and dogs blood

Tweede

The blotting of mites behind his eyes
Shiver when becomes it slight twilight
The mites have mouths which drink the honey
Of their stolen tribal stash

One, two, tickle them three his sinuses
He rubs alternate his nose

Above the temple which used to crush
With vexing pain the steeple rang
Among blue orbs that grow with heat
Now flutter all pricks to sleep

But now mites jump off cranium walls
Always in their restless operations
He shakes them round and they drop down
They seizure on their mighty backs

Derde

Everyone who knows of him
Knows that he already wiped off
The last importance that is fresh in verse

And they who don't know this
Unimportantly scrawl the same
Terrible verse,
Soliciting always
And always again

He bought a cabin long ago
On a dusty, little island
And answered only to his hand
His pen conducted writing

He drew
Concerning each line
In pages barred in black
When swollowed in his throat
Then he knew he'd wrote another

Yes and he one day will pass
But all would know
That he was the man
Who brought all words
To a heaping end

He crossed the definite line
Finite i dotted
He put pressure on all writers
Oh those incorrigible writers!

Vierde

Around my neck
There is a dried, leather chord
Which maps the house of my lover
In stone
Beyond my old decendant shores
Where thunder snaps
and sea is thrown

I joined her in her house of stone
Where her grandma-ma had passed
Moaning in a language
She never taught

Her...

Hair pulled aside
Face dark and void
Her brackish eyes
Peered my ear to shoulder
Mouth attended to my neck

Still I knew
She looked all the yonder
For a form by foggy night
And though she kept me dense
I feel
My sense
I know
She's dragging eyes for him

Who was he?
Who did disturb us?
In anger there I held her

She kept me close
When him I smelled
Fetidness
Salt and fish detritus
And though she thought to move my mind
My mind it washed
With things unlawful

Around his neck
I will give
The dried, leather chord
With
The map
My love gave me
So long ago

Vijfde

The fuming filligree of a long-stem pipe
Catches his nose
Twisting his head
His hat's guarding edge
Blunts in the wind
The boat is full of men
Inebriants and tobacco

She pulls ever tightly
Her woolen mantle
Still the wind
Bellows through
And burns
With each inhale

He is a poor Welshman
Coat stolen from a sleeping sailor
Drunk on claret
It's heaviness on his shoulders
Negotiated warmth
From the sailor's coquettish dream

His lady is a merchant's daughter
Promises she gave
Out of her fathers distance
She's bound her hair with silk
And gloved her hands in ermine
At the docks of Liverpool

Upon the chilled, great waters
He takes his trade
A tailor
Overseas to Nantucket
Where he a sail can catch

She grasps his hand
A whitefish in the darkened sea
Her parasol a shield
From the lateral rain
The charcoal fabric seems loomed
From the blackened sky above
