Two miners, three hundred reporters

Tasmania must surely be thanking God those two mining boys have finally breached the surface. It is a wonder the green island hasn't already sunk with the collective weight of almost every journalist in the country. God forbid something serious to happen on the mainland - we certainly wouldn't be seeing much of it. Surely two to three TV journalists for one channel at the scene is enough, let alone some networks who sent down their nightly newsreader as well. Don't get me wrong - amazing story and happy ending (although lets not forget the guy who died). But there's only so much you can report about two guys you can't see sitting a kilometre underground. It was hardly the visual spectacular of Thredbo. No wonder some in the town have begun to get slightly pissed off with the hoards of media hounds (eg. one publican spat on a News Ltd. reporter). Talk about the Aboriginees in Melbourne's Kings Domain setting up camp illegally! Anyway, enough of the cynicism. Well done to the rescuers and congrats to the two survivors - must have been fucking hell down there. Now we'll just have to see whether Foofighters frontman Dave Grohl lives up to his word and comes to buy them a beer each. None of the media will be heading home if they get a sniff of that little story coming to fruition. But hey, with the future of the mine now under review and the economics of the tiny town of Beaconsfield in jeopardy, a hungry reporters pack who need rooms to sleep in will at least keep money in the pockets of the locals for now.
