15 Years of Ruckus -- The Troublemakers at Old Ironsides, Friday March 28, 2008
Category: Music
There are a few things you can count on when it comes to The Troublemakers: they will play about once per year, they will look sharp, the ever-reliable Stan and Brian will lay down a solid rhythm section, Tim will sing about 75% of the lyrics tops in any given song, Rodney will complain a lot, and at some point the show will dissolve into complete chaos. This is what you could expect at the end of an average Troublemakers gig:
I saw the Troublemakers for the first time in ’94. They blew me away, because not only did they look and sound like they had sprung fully-formed from a Back From the Grave comp, they were also a little scary, in no small part due to Tim Foster’s antics. He would lay down on stage, crawl on the floor, stick the mic in your face, wander into the bathroom or outside in the middle of a song -- basically going as far as the mic cord would let him. He also liked to climb things -- kick drums, PA stacks, tables, bars -- nothing was too tall or wobbly for him to scale and teeter on precariously. I’ve never seen him fall, although one time he jumped onto a small cafe table I was sitting at and nearly slipped off -- there was a split second I was sure he was going to wind up in my lap. His antics became legendary, and he loved to tell you about them. One time he threw a bag of flour all over a club, never to play there again. Another time he confronted some lady who was heckling him and said, "You remind me of my dear departed mother, who’s not even dead yet." She slapped him, my guess is out of confusion, since even Tim doesn’t know what he meant by that cryptic remark. I remember being a little wary that I was going to get beer poured on me, or tripped by a mic cord, or worst of all, have him get in my face -- you just never knew what was going to happen. Until that is, you saw them a few times. I soon realized that while the specifics were often spontaneous, it was also choreographed chaos. I don’ t feel like I’m betraying any trade secrets here, because anyone who has talked to Tim Foster knows he’s not actually deranged, but in fact one of the nicest guys around. Plus when you call yourselves the Troublemakers you’re setting yourself up for certain expectations, right? So perhaps the biggest surprise to me was the lack of usual shennanigans. Sure, Tim temporarily disappeared during a couple of songs, (I enjoyed the confused look on Stan’s face at one point as he tried to figure out where Tim had gone) but all in all was on his best behavior. It was perhaps the most together I have ever seen the Troublemakers. No false starts, no bickering, no moments where the song fell apart. Not that those moments aren’t entertaining, mind you, but they just didn’t happen this time, and I didn’t miss them. Although it was pretty funny when they wrapped up "Jack The Ripper," which has often been their closing number, and Tim ended the show by walking away with the kick drum. And another thing: these guys are aging criminally well. Here they are at their "last ever" show, which was about 10 years ago:

And here they are now:
So here’s to 15 years of the Troublemakers and wishing them 15 more -- they’ll probably STILL look the same, the bastards.
