New York State Clearly Paying Eliot Spitzer Too Much
Current mood: whorey
Yesterday I heard the phrase "Eliot Spitzer tied to prostitution ring" many, many times.
Until I heard the whole story, I drew a completely different conclusion from that headline.
To me, "tied to prostitution ring" sounds like Spitzer was actually running whores, not paying for them. Or perhaps receiving some kind of kickback from an "escort service". When I found out he was merely a stupid john, I was both relieved (at least he's not involved with organized crime) and disappointed (at least if he was tied to the Mafia, that would have shown some industry and brains.)
Maybe it was just me. (Not Jenni.)
I still think a headline like "Eliot Spitzer Likes Whores", "Eliot Spitzer Is Hapless Overcharged John" or "State of New York Clearly Paying Eliot Spitzer Too Much" would have been a little clearer.
Historical note: Eliot Ness died a broken, alcoholic, publicly humiliated mess after getting into politics. No more crusading prosecutors named Eliot, please.

In the end, you can't escape Ice Nine
Current mood: Bokonist
In his hundred-and-nineteenth Calypso, the prophet Bokonon invites us to sing along with him:
"Where's my good old gang done gone?" I heard a sad man say I whispered in that sad man's ear "Your gang's done gone away."

Two important things about Sunday
Current mood: hobotastic
One: set your clocks ahead. Congress decided to move the whole Daylight Savings Hoo-hah ahead to mid-March. If you don't believe me, just look at your celphone Sunday morning. It's smarter than you: it'll know what time it is.
Two: This is only important because you don't want to be an hour late to THE VICTORY VARIETY SHOW. Augusta's burlesque/comedy/music/variety show is back, at El Cid. Not King-King, because King-King sucks ass. No, EL CID.
This month's show is
HOBO-EROTIC a celebration of bums, bindlestiffs, and low-down dirty Jazz
Sunday's artists are the following collection of funny people, dancers, musicians and nekkid ladies. (Some of them are all four. Especially Gary Shapiro.)
Selene Luna Princess Farhana The Wet Spots Hobo Jazz Gary Shapiro The Nudie Kewpies Peter Perigo and the short film Ho-Bot
When: Sunday Mar 11, 2007 at 9:30 PM
Where:: El Cid 4212 Sunset Blvd. in Silverlake Los Angeles, CA 90001 United States View Map
LA's "high-fallutin' low-brow" variety show is now at El Cid every 2nd Sunday of the month. Patio Fun starts at 9:30, show starts at 10pm Cover $12, but it's 2 DOLLARS OFF with the flyer. Which I will hand to you in person, or you can download it from the website below.

Coffee Date opens in New York...
Current mood: Villagey
This weekend, "Coffee Date" opens in Manhattan, in the Village.
We got a snooty, dismissive review in the NY Times, and a rave in the Village Voice. Win-win.
For those of you just coming in... Coffee Date is a sweet little romantic comedy feature film. I cut it. Meaning, I edited it. And now it's come to your very own New York City to play on the big screen for your enterjoyment.
More information here: Coffee Date in New York
It's only playing until Tuesday, so do not delay. Run, don't walk.
If you go Saturday night at seven, you can meet the director, Stewart, plus stand-up Jason Stuart and kooky Oscar nominee Sally Kirkland.
Enjoy...

I watched "The Mod Squad" when I was a kid...

Now... guess which character I identified with. Hint: he's not the black one, the girl, or the punk.
It's true. I thought their boss, with the short hair and the suits, was the cool one. He was in charge. He was dressed like an adult. On some level I cleary missed the point of the entire program.
Tige Andrews, who played the "un-mod" character on the Mod Squad, and... yes... a Klingon... passed away last week. His real name was Tiger. And no one will ever convince me that he wasn't the coolest one.

A lesson learned, at the expense of Alfonso Cuaron
Category: Games
A masterpiece set twenty years in the future hasn't a prayer against even the most slapdash contemporary film. So, if you want to be nominated for Best Picture or Best Director, do not under any circumstances make a serious science fiction film. Write that down. Remember it. I'm looking at YOU, Cronenberg.
Ironically, even the lamest genre movie set in the past has a better chance. (cf. Gladiator, Dances With Wolves, Braveheart, etc.) This may also be why fantasy is perfectly acceptable to Academy voters.

the most beautiful people in the world
They're gone now, but this is what they looked like a year or two before I was born. Dad is the sharp-looking character in profile, speaking. Mom is listening, or perhaps wishing Dad hadn't accepted an invitation to speak at the "Eastern Science Fiction Association" meeting.

"words can't express", like the man says...
