Artists that I learned about on MySpace and now like:
Category: Music
One of the great benefits of this medium is my getting introduced to music that I might not have otherwise heard. Following is an incomplete, nonexhaustive list of a fraction of the many artists whose music I stumbled upon on this site (listed in alphabetical order, by last name), followed by their myspace page name. Disclaimer: this list in no way suggests that the artists are yet undiscovered. I know that they've already got a strong following. I am merely a new fan.
-Nathan Angelo (nathanangelo)
-Tracy Bundy (tracybundy)
-Michael Cameneti (mcameneti)
-David Ryan Harris (davidryanharris)
-Josh Hoge (joshhoge)
-Kiff (kiff)
-Jon McLaughlin (jonmclaughlin)

"Seating Assignments"
12-5-05: "Seating Assignments" OK, so I realize I've got a lot of catching up to do. I've scribbled down journal notes, to be fleshed out at a later time. I don't have time to work on them right now, but just had to get this one thing off my chest: ...so I'm sitting in one of my favorite Nashville coffee shops--the Frothy Monkey. When I walked in, the place was packed. Only one table was open--a rectangular-shaped table with 6 chairs (seats 1, 2, & 3 on one side; seats 4, 5, & 6 on the other side). I claimed seat #3 by putting down my back pack then went in line to order a coffee. When I returned, there were two girls hovering at seats 1 & 4 (across from one another). They asked if the seats were taken, and if not could they sit there. I told them that they were welcomed to sit there. Several minutes later, a guy resembling the character "Hurley" from the tv show LOST asked if seat #6 were open. In case you have not yet figured out my invisible schematic, seat #6 is directly across from my seat #3. Not a problem--yet. In no time, I could see him asking our female table-mates question after question after question (I've got headphones in, which loudly sends the nonverbal signal of "don't talk to me, because I can't hear you"). The girls were gracious, but left pretty soon thereafter. Here comes the awkward part: it's now just him and me at this table--sitting directly across from one other. There are four other chairs available at the table. Why won't he move? Isn't this awkward for him? Ideally, he should move to chair #4 (diagonally opposite from me). Doesn't he know I'm writing about him right now? Wait...relief...an elderly man with a walker and a woman who appears to be his daughter take seats 1 & 4. No longer awkward. Fhew!

Update on my mother
Current mood: drained
Blog: 10-5-05 Update on my mother
I've been noticeably quiet on the message boards for a while. Been going through a lot of personal stuff with my family in NJ. After a long battle with a disease called scleroderma, my mother died on Thursday, 9-29-05. Today is her funeral. Im at a loss for words, other than Im petitioning your prayers for me and for me family.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, my mother would be honored by your gift to The Scleroderma Foundation 300 Rosewood Drive, Suite 105 Danvers, MA 01923 800.722.HOPE (4673) | 978.463.5843 sfinfo@scleroderma.org www.scleroderma.org
Ill be back soon.

...on the road again
Journal Update: 6-27-05 …on the road again
I’m flying home from San Francisco. The airport shuttle picked me up at 6:00 AM. The drive has one other passenger to pick up en route to the airport. Looking for her house, he got lost and wasted about 20 minutes in wrong turns and u-turns. A bit nerve-wracking. But still, I got to the airport on time.
Paid $7.00 for a bacon, egg, and cheese croissant at the airport. Expensive. And that was one of the cheapest things on the menu too. It was served in a most unusual way. Behind the counter and under a clear sneeze shield, they had a pile of pre-assembled croissants with egg and cheese (hereinafter referred to as an “ECC” [which stands for “egg & cheese croissant]). When a customer asked for a ham ECC or a sausage ECC or a bacon ECC, all the eatery had to do was add on the meat of choice. I paid for the food and took it over to my gate, where I waited for my row to be called. I opened the Styrofoam container only to find that they merely laid the bacon on top of the pre-assembled ECC, rather than placing it inside the ECC. At first glance…an easy fix. But when I tried to open the croissant to insert the bacon strips, I found that the once-melted-now-hardened cheese had worked as an adherent, causing the croissant to stick together. Attempts to pull the two sides apart would irreparably (and messily) damage the croissant. For seven bucks you’d think they would MAKE the sandwich rather than give me the ingredients to make it myself.
Observation of randomness: On my to San Francisco last week, I had a layover in Dallas. While waiting the gate for my connecting flight, I notice I person sitting a few seats away from me. There were some distinctive things about his physical feature that caught my attention: He plucked his eyebrows, wore make-up, and was gratuitously adorned in jewelry (lots of necklaces, rings, and bracelets.) A great object of the great American pastime: people-watching. Today (one week later) I see that same person in San Francisco. He works at the airport as a ticketing agent. Wow, small world. What are the chances? I saw this stranger a week ago….1,800 miles ago, 6 million people ago. And now, here I am seeing him again. Then again, who knows? Perhaps I’ve seeing other such strangers again but don’t realize it. But because this had such a unique look, he was clearly identifiable.
So now I’m on the airplane. The man in front of me has reclined his seat back, which is now firmly and uncomfortably pressing against my kneecaps. I hate him. In order to type right now, I have to hold my laptop at an angle so that the “palm end” of the computer is resting on my ribcage. Not a big deal, but I feel “funny” holding my hands down at a 90-degree angle in order to type. The man’s son, who is sitting to his left (and in front of the elderly female passenger to my left), has been slamming his back against his chair for 2 hours now. This action is causing her tray table (and consequently her food and beverage thereon) to jiggle uncontrollably. Additionally, the boy has been kicking the back of the seat in front of him for 2 hours. I wonder why neither his father nor his mother (who is sitting across the aisle from the father-and-son-dynamic-duo) is doing anything to curb his behavior. If I were the person in front of and/or in back of the boy, I would hate him too.
The man across the aisle from me pulled down his tray table and is taking a nap. He’s in the position of the famous statue “The Thinker,” using his hand as a headrest. He just fell…i.e., his elbow slipped off the tray table and his upper torso fell forward and hung over into the aisle.
It’s funny to think that these people don’t know me and I don’t know them yet I am posting stories about them online for the world to read. (I’m pretty sure the entire world reads my blog.)
And speaking of running into people at the airport (I spoke of it a few paragraphs ago)…I saw my good friend, Josh Reeder at the airport in LA. He and his wife were returning home to Nashville from a vacation in LA. He and I instant message’d the day he left for the trip last week, with him asking me for suggested places to go. His internet dropped out several times, so I don’t think he saw all the info I had written. I was just thinking about that yesterday and entertained thoughts of calling him to check out whether they found everything they wanted while in LA. And bam…here he is in front of me in LA. I don’t know why, but it always fun to see someone you know in a foreign place when you weren’t expecting to run into them.
I’m scheduled to land in Nashville at 5:00 PM. It’s our wedding anniversary today. Instead of a traditionally romantic date night, we will spend the evening with Merritt doing my laundry and making a gourmet dinner while the kids and I wrestle, build a child-life-sized castle with our giant Lego blocks, and swim in the pool. After dinner, I’ll give the kids a bath while Merritt does the dishes. Then we’ll all reconvene on the couch, where we’ll watch a movie.
After having been gone for a week, there’s a desire to make up for lost time by trying to cram in tons of fun in the first 24 hours that I’m back. However, I won’t have 24 hours at home because I leave again tomorrow morning for 8 days. When I return, I will have missed my daughter’s birthday and the 4th of July (in addition to already having missed most of our anniversary). Didn’t plan the schedule very well this year.
We’re now starting our descent. It’s now time to turn off all electronic devices, stow our tray tables, and raise our chair backs to an upright position (thank God!).
