For senior, abortion a medium for art, political discourse

Art major Aliza Shvarts '08 wants to make a statement.

Beginning next Tuesday, Shvarts will be displaying her senior art project, a documentation of a nine-month process during which she artificially inseminated herself "as often as possible" while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages. Her exhibition will feature video recordings of these forced miscarriages as well as preserved collections of the blood from the process.

The goal in creating the art exhibition, Shvarts said, was to spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body. But her project has already provoked more than just debate, inciting, for instance, outcry at a forum for fellow senior art majors held last week. And when told about Shvarts' project, students on both ends of the abortion debate have expressed shock . saying the project does everything from violate moral code to trivialize abortion.

But Shvarts insists her concept was not designed for "shock value."

"I hope it inspires some sort of discourse," Shvarts said. "Sure, some people will be upset with the message and will not agree with it, but it's not the intention of the piece to scandalize anyone."

The "fabricators," or donors, of the sperm were not paid for their services, but Shvarts required them to periodically take tests for sexually transmitted diseases. She said she was not concerned about any medical effects the forced miscarriages may have had on her body. The abortifacient drugs she took were legal and herbal, she said, and she did not feel the need to consult a doctor about her repeated miscarriages.

Shvarts declined to specify the number of sperm donors she used, as well as the number of times she inseminated herself.

Art major Juan Castillo '08 said that although he was intrigued by the creativity and beauty of her senior project, not everyone was as thrilled as he was by the concept and the means by which she attained the result.

"I really loved the idea of this project, but a lot other people didn't," Castillo said. "I think that most people were very resistant to thinking about what the project was really about. [The senior-art-project forum] stopped being a conversation on the work itself."

Although Shvarts said she does not remember the class being quite as hostile as Castillo described, she said she believes it is the nature of her piece to "provoke inquiry."

"I believe strongly that art should be a medium for politics and ideologies, not just a commodity," Shvarts said. "I think that I'm creating a project that lives up to the standard of what art is supposed to be."

The display of Schvarts' project will feature a large cube suspended from the ceiling of a room in the gallery of Green Hall. Schvarts will wrap hundreds of feet of plastic sheeting around this cube; lined between layers of the sheeting will be the blood from Schvarts' self-induced miscarriages mixed with Vaseline in order to prevent the blood from drying and to extend the blood throughout the plastic sheeting.

Schvarts will then project recorded videos onto the four sides of the cube. These videos, captured on a VHS camcorder, will show her experiencing miscarriages in her bathrooom tub, she said. Similar videos will be projected onto the walls of the room.

School of Art lecturer Pia Lindman, Schvarts' senior-project advisor, could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.

Few people outside of Yale's undergraduate art department have heard about Shvarts' exhibition. Members of two campus abortion-activist groups . Choose Life at Yale, a pro-life group, and the Reproductive Rights Action League of Yale, a pro-choice group . said they were not previously aware of Schvarts' project.

Alice Buttrick '10, an officer of RALY, said the group was in no way involved with the art exhibition and had no official opinion on the matter.

Sara Rahman '09 said, in her opinion, Shvarts is abusing her constitutional right to do what she chooses with her body.

"[Shvarts' exhibit] turns what is a serious decision for women into an absurdism," Rahman said. "It discounts the gravity of the situation that is abortion."

CLAY member Jonathan Serrato '09 said he does not think CLAY has an official response to Schvarts' exhibition. But personally, Serrato said he found the concept of the senior art project "surprising" and unethical.

"I feel that she's manipulating life for the benefit of her art, and I definitely don't support it," Serrato said. "I think it's morally wrong."

Shvarts emphasized that she is not ashamed of her exhibition, and she has become increasingly comfortable discussing her miscarriage experiences with her peers.

"It was a private and personal endeavor, but also a transparent one for the most part," Shvarts said. "This isn't something I've been hiding."

The official reception for the Undergraduate Senior Art Show will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on April 25. The exhibition will be on public display from April 22 to May 1. The art exhibition is set to premiere alongside the projects of other art seniors this Tuesday, April 22 at the gallery of Holcombe T. Green Jr. Hall on Chapel Street.

00:19 - Nova Rate
Category: Goals, Plans, Hopes

So a few years back, probably about twelve, several scholars modeled the statistics and properties of Galactic cataclysmic variables (CVs) by means of a population synthesis.
Sirius B Absorption Spectra, Taken By Hubble Telescope. Hydrogen Rich White Dwarf, As Indicated By Lines of Hydrogen .

In particular, that genius Politano (1988, 1996), de Kool (1992), and Tutukov & Yungelson (1995) computed the birthrates of zero-age CVs (ZACVs). Kolb (1993) modeled the present-day population of CVs by synthesizing the published birthrates with a prescription for their secular evolution. Rappaport, Di Stefano, & Smith (1994) and Yungelson et al. (1996) developed a model population of semidetached systems with white dwarf accretors that burn hydrogen steadily and low-mass main-sequence donors. I believe this was a land mark synthesis.
white dwarf cluster

These are believed to underlie supersoft X-ray sources (some of which manifest themselves as CVs for part of the time). I was still a super duper geek back in 1991 and as such, I specifically remember that it was Ritter, who attempted to model the mass spectrum of the white dwarfs (WDs) in the Galactic novae.
white dwarf

It was Kolb (In 1995 I believe) who computed a model for the orbital period distribution of Galactic novae.

The main focus of these studies has been the determination of the dependence of the properties of the theoretical population of CVs on such model parameters as the distribution of the initial systems over the mass ratios of the components, the efficiency of deposition of energy into common envelopes, and the details of the angular momentum loss from the system. All of these models assumed a constant star formation rate.
White Dwarf

One fact shown by these studies was that the typical mass of white dwarf accretors in ZACVs declines with increasing time elapsed from the formation of the zero-age main-sequence system (e.g., de Kool 1992; Tutukov & Yungelson 1995; Politano 1996). Everyone does not agree, but I believe this implies that the rate of formation of CVs, the nova rate, and the nova distribution over speed classes depend on the star formation history.

So with a population-synthesis code, we basically calculate the expected nova rate in stellar systems with different star formation histories for different input parameters in relation to the initial binary population.  We have seen that the current nova rate in a galaxy is determined by the galaxy's star formation history. They teach us to illustrate this for ourselves by showing that in irregular and spiral galaxies, the currently observed nova rates are determined mainly by the present disk star formation rate, while in elliptical galaxies the rate depends mainly on the mass of the galaxy.

As annoying as it is to even mentally approach, it really does offer an explanation for the suspected differences in the observed nova rates per unit of K luminosity in different galaxies. The differences between bulge and disk novae in the Galaxy are probably also related to the respective ages of the parent populations. That is probably a given, but I'm still learning.

Sigh... Just sharing. No big deals, so don't waste too much time on comtemplating this. I just wanted to see if i had any readers who could empathize. Personally, this sort of brain exercizing is just that... Otherwise, who cares, right?  I'm sure Death would not be concerned with such things if she came for you. LOL! Spend time on what matters.

 Love.

00:32 - Long, boring and lack luster blog for human consumption
Current mood: vibrant

So I had to deliver a script to a big time actress last week, but it was in a secret location in Beverly Hills. When I finally arrive at the destination (only a couple of minutes early?), I have to pass up an exceptionally gorgeous woman that I should have made introduction to because she had super duper model written all over her. Could’ve been a star. Oh well. So the receptionist acts as if I was out of line for asking for the actress. Then she wanted to pretend as if she had no idea of whom I was speaking. Quite odd. I think she was sexually attracted to me and could not help but stumble and fumble over her thoughts. Very understandable, so I gave her a pass.

Thankfully, a second receptionist overheard the conversation and offered to deliver the package to my target. Now I’m faced with a dilemma. I mean, how do I know she will really deliver the package? What if she works for the enemy and was set in place just to prevent me from accomplishing my mission? I tried to feel out her surface intent and sure enough, she was full of it. Then she smiled… I thought about my Glock… Then I returned her smile with equal brightness as I surveyed the number of surveillance mechanisms in modest lobby. She rescues me again by running her mouth about a "highly specialized treatment" the actress was receiving and I could not go back there because the women blah blah blah blah….

$$hmmmmmmm. they’ve got that damn PTZ/DVR wireless cam thing going on… i can disrupt the signal momentarily, but the access link is in another room. more cock blocks to bypass.$$

So after care consideration of the two 350 degree panning ptz cams, the whole inputs, outputs, the strategy connecting the inputs and the ouptputs, the available energy sources to fuel the strategy and an overall analysis of the possible subsystems of such a structure, my mind drifted back to my Glock.

To my dismay, I became aware that the receptionist asking for the package was feeling for my intent. This could be disastrous. I had to think on my feet for real now because both of the women were starting to emanate this funny style vibe, like I was a Black Man in a high end Beverly Hills boutique and was not about to spend no money. Damn… Next they started looking like they were about to push the panic button! DOUBLE DAMN!!!

Naturally, like any other multiversal traveler, I froze time and stepped out of that mess for a couple of seconds. It all became so clear then. I stepped back in and simultaneously turned everything a calm blue and handed her the script. I thanked her graciously for being so kind to go through such trouble for me. I walked out of that boutique, light potentially $20 Million and looked for the model chick. Of course she was no where to be found. I think she instinctively new I would put her lazy ass to work and went to hide. A couple of hours later, I discovered that the actress had received the package safely intact.

Now why did I have to go through all of that drama if it was that easy? Because I’m an ass? Perhaps, but besides that, it’s just what I do. Some may find this a bit wacky, but your behavioral strategies are just as bazaar and senseless to me. We just choose to experience things differently, that’s all.

Perhaps I was programmed this way, but so what if I was? Maybe I got triggers? Brainwashed maybe? Y’all aint sayin nuthin ’bout that John McCain cat! He’s the one who was a POW and more likely to fall victim to such a thing. According to Ross Perot, McCain did some pretty shady things immediately after his liberation. What if they put down some that young
MK-ULTRA (shows you how long it’s been for me. still trying to link the old way) on him and all it takes is a trigger word. How are we to know? Somehow, I don’t think I’ll be voting for him. Why risk it?

I know I’m way out there. Hahaha! The funny part is I have friends who actually try to figure this out. No, really!

I tell you, these damn multiple epiphanies and synchronicities are a riot!

I have not blogged in a long time. It feels good. Perhaps I will just keep this to myself… Like I really want everyone on MySpace knowing how much fun I have in life. Fools be hatin and we know fo’sho’ they be snitchin. I think I’ll go hard and juice this one for what it’s worth. Who knows when I’ll get around to doing it again… We are dealing with what I like to term "Reality Folders." Man, all of this behavioral strategy talk reminds me of topography. I was exposed to the study at an early age because I got sprung on computers at 12. Yeah, quintessential geek. Uainkno? So basically, a "set" or "domain" contains a set of characteristics which then define the mathematical operations that are possible within that domain. If we speak in terms of psychodynamics, there exist "Reality Folders" or "belief systems" containing groups of thought forms which are associated with conceptions and misconceptions of reality. Each thought form contains its own definitions of reality, such as all men are cruel; love is weak; being in control is safe and strong.

From what I’ve seen, as people go through life on a daily basis they also go through different "Folders" or levels of reality defined by these groups of thought forms. One experiences the world differently in each reality folder.

The more I learn about energies and the aura, the firm confirmation I find that thought forms are energetic, observable realities which radiate colors at various intensities. Their intensity and definition of form are a result of the energy or importance a person has given them. Thought forms are created, built and maintained by their owners through habitual thoughts. The more definite and clear the thoughts, the more definite the form. The nature and strength of emotions associated with the thoughts give the form its color, intensity and power. These thoughts may or may not be conscious. So a thought form can be built from constantly thinking of a fear like "She’s going to leave me." The creator of the thought form will act as if it is going to happen. The energy field of the thought form will affect the field of the person it is about in a negative way. It will probably have the effect of pushing the person away. I’ve done that idiot shit before. Really juvenile, but it happens when we get too caught up in the play.

So the more this is given power, by putting energy into it, either consciously or unconsciously, the more effective it will be in creating the feared result. It seems like most of the time, these thought forms are so naturally a part of the personality that the individual doesn’t even notice them. Ha! So peep this, these things begin to form in childhood and are based on a child’s reasoning, then integrated into the personality. They are like extra baggage a person carries about within oneself, not noticing their effect, which is very great. These conglomerate thought forms, reality folders, or belief systems, manifest many "effects" in one’s outer reality. I was taught that these forms are not deeply buried in the unconscious but are on the edge of consciousness, they can be retrieved through word association games and meditation. Once the forms are brought to the focus of the consciousness by expressing the feelings associated with them and releasing those feelings, they are then possible to change. This process allows a clearer view of the assumptions about reality which make up the forms. When the invalid assumptions (remember they are based on logic from childhood) are uncovered, seen and released, they can be replaced by a more mature, clear view of reality, which in turn leads to the creation of positive life experiences.

Within some personalities, these forms are interconnected and the person’s consciousness is rarely immersed totally in one space without being aware of most of the others, so the person maintains a high degree of integration in her daily life. Conversely, a different type of personality may flow from one space of reality to the other with alacrity, but may not be aware of any connectedness between them. He may not be able to integrate or understand this dynamic flow and thus lives in confusion, especially when a particular chronic cyclical flow is triggered off internally. He may then be caught in an automatic sequential flow from one thought to the next while remaining hopelessly entangled and unable to free himself from this chronic cycle until the whole thing is played out. Been there, done that too. Now this is some real idiot shit and sadly I can say that I have rarely met an individual who did not suffer from this. A very touchy issue. Usually, when I am caught up in such a state, I find that it is more than just being caught up in one of my reality spaces, because more often than not, I am simply far too entangled within my own arrogance to even consider the possibility that such may be the case. The worse part for me is that even when I do recognize the cycle, I may see it out anyway just for kicks. LOL! Got live and have fun sometimes, you know? More often, one is able to move to a different state of reality only because the cyclical action of the thought form has exhausted all of the available energy. He or she will not know how he moved out of the cyclical pattern and, therefore, will probably be unable to extricate his or herself from the cycle the next time it is triggered. It takes practice.

These states of reality can be euphoric, as in the state I find in hopeful clients, in which a person thinks they will accomplish great things and become famous or rich but is not aware of the tremendous amount of practical work ahead of them before they can attain such a goal. Or it may be an opposite effect, in which the person sees oneself in a much worse state than is the case. In either state, one is not in truth about oneself or one’s life situation. In both states he is probably seeing a part of himself and exaggerating it. She may have the potential to create all the great things she sees for herself in the first state, but much work and time is needed. On the other hand, in the second negative state, one sees the parts of oneself that one needs to change, but forgets that change is possible. For the absurdly arrogant, like me, we don’t even see a necessity to change or we find it more convenient to see things as the issues of others alone and thus release ourselves of the responsibility of maturing. What a mess! But oh so fun.

Now this is the part of the web log where I tie everything together and drill it all home with rigorous mental challenges. Feel free to dig as deeply into denial as you see fit. Based on my research of the "Aura," I have come to the understanding that particular thought forms remain stationary in the energy field until triggered by an internal or external energy input. It also seems that I somehow act as a trigger of some sort for most ppl. They tend to resent me for it too, but I give ppl fair warning… What?! Am I to adjust my energy so others can remain stagnant? Tame my thoughts, which will in turn mute my energy to a degree? Keep dreaming. This is non compromise on mine. I’m on a mission and the more ppl I can trigger the better. Eventually, they will become empowered enough to exit the cycles at will and at some point, even dissolve the triggers. Notice I did not say remove or pull out… For those who have eyes to see. These forms then move through the aura in a chronic sequence but are not released. They simply play themselves out and become dormant until gaining enough energy to move again. Thought forms gain energy through the individual’s habitual semi-conscious thoughts and related feelings. They also gain energy by manifesting similar thoughts and feelings from other ppl. In other words, if you continually judge yourself about something, your actions and feelings will follow your judgments and soon, through both, the ppl you know will get the picture too and agree with you! LOL! As such, they will begin sending you energy in the form of their thoughts and feelings about you which agree with yours. Well what the hell do you expect?! It is the way of things. We are naturally wired to cooperate with each other, remember? We are the same.

My drill feels a lil shaky, let me change bits… if you keep telling yourself that you are dumb, unworthy, ugly or fat, soon others will agree with you. It is just that simple. This energy is added to your personal stockpile until your thought form has enough energy to be triggered. You will then fall into a state in which you are convinced you are dumb, ugly, unworthy, or fat, until the energy in the thought form is dissipated for the time being. Or you may, of course, manifest an external event which will trigger it with an explosion of energy. In either case, the process is the same. Such a trigger is not necessarily negative, for if the individual is in a therapeutic process, he may be able to break out of his chronic cycle and break up the cyclical form substantially enough to handle it very well the next time it gets triggered. Please do not get too caught up in the method in which I deliver. It is very irrelevant. My only cause is that of healing. We must heal ourselves and others. It is the only way for humans to go. Many deny the need of this mission and I instinctively like to write them off as being cowards, but inside, I know they are merely operating under either a corrupt or dated belief system. If something is dated, is it not then termed evil? Or perhaps when something is just too advanced, too futuristic, is it too not termed evil? Dated and futuristic allude to the lie of time. Forgive me that. I think it better to say they be out of place and thus in disharmony.

So, I’m a bit tired of typing right now. Plus I’m hungry! Maybe I will add more in the form of responses to comments. Or maybe I will respond to none. Either way, the bottom line is the apparent connection between illness and psychological problems. We stop our feelings by blocking our energy flow. This creates stagnated pools of energy in our systems which when held there long enough lead to disease in the physical body. The broad view of the healer encompasses the totality of the human being. In healing there is no separation between body and mind, emotions and spirit-all need to be in balance to create a healthy human being. The healer focuses on physical, psychological and spiritual malfunction. It is impossible to do healing without affecting the psychological levels of the personality. The more the healer understands the psychodynamics of her loved ones, the more the healer will be equipped to help those loved ones heal themselves. I promise it is not rocket science, but it aint easy either. Well, it is very easy in many ways. You find that dual minded? I say complete minded.

Thank you for your time.

 Peace&Blessings

Personally, I do not believe that any of the organizations or even the collective individual efforts of the race can help us at this point. Not on this level anyway. I truly appreciate Gore and especially Leo's efforts and intentions, but the reality of our situation is that all of these efforts and intentions are merely congruent with the treating of symptoms, which of course is only good for temporary relief and is otherwise just procrastination and ignorance. When will we finally get it?! I must commend all who make an attempt to awaken the race to our URGENT condition and perhaps this is the first step, but just as I disagree with all things not holistic I must disagree with the waste of energies and money (which is energy too) being dished out for the cause.

The truth of the matter is that the issues we currently face are the symptoms of our wrong thinking and thus, our wrong living. These disasters and threats are spiritual in nature. To bring on the much needed spiritual transformation in the race is also to cure our physical ills. Higher thinking brings on higher living, higher actions and we will eventually walk on water and not worry about our big feet stomping all over the mother and leaving footprints. All things are within. Change what is going on in the inside and we will how our evironment will begin to love us again instead of sending it's White T cells after us...

The Tip of the Iceberg.

Where it wasn't scorching hot in North America this past summer, it was flooded. But it wasn't just in North America. Large parts of Europe and Asia seemed to be either blazing (literally) or submerged under flash floods, mudslides, or overflowing rivers. And where harm didn't come from the sky, it came from beneath the ground: Peru is recovering from a deadly earthquake, and in Japan the biggest nuclear power station was shut down after a quake triggered radiation leakage. These disasters, as many scientists already admit, are merely the tip of an iceberg whose immensity is immeasurable. The occurrence of another monstrous catastrophe is more a question of when than of if. Could it be that we're beginning to feel, as environmentalist James Lovelock titled his book, The Revenge of Gaia (Earth, in Greek mythology)? On August 29, 2005, after many unheeded warnings, Hurricane Katrina battered the southeast shores of Louisiana, devastating New Orleans, Biloxi, and other neighboring towns, killing almost 2,000 people, and costing more than any other storm in history.

Today, more than two years after the deadly storm, the scars of Katrina are far from healed, and the tormented Big Easy is farther from being at ease than ever. Moreover, a quick survey of worldwide natural disasters in the two years since Katrina struck reveals a pattern of events of escalating severity and frequency. The catastrophes that struck this summer alone are enough to make any sane person shudder. Floods killed hundreds of people in North Korea; hundreds more were killed in an earthquake in Peru; thousands died in China's monsoon-triggered flashfloods. Fires in Italy and Greece set aflame tens of thousands of acres, including numerous settlements that were simply turned to smoldering ashes. These villages, once picturesque, will be uninhabitable for the foreseeable future. On the other side of the ocean, numerous areas in the American Midwest were sodden with ceaseless rains that caused rivers to rise far above their flood levels. As a result, thousands of Americans were displaced and lost their homes. So many disasters occurred this summer, it's hard to keep track of them all: the California fires and the tornado that flattened Greensburg, Kansas are just two examples.

Perhaps the term "severe weather warning" should be changed to "hostile climate threat."Climate Is in VogueEven Hollywood has taken this topic to heart. Two blockbusting documentaries—Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth, and 11th Hour, narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio—are prominent examples of this trend. Sections on the environment can be found in any serious paper, and climate related topics make daily headlines. It seems that nearly 250 years after the industrial revolution, we have finally begun to acknowledge its consequences. If in the past we were mostly concerned with the survival of certain species, today the survival of all species is at risk, including our own. If we don't revolutionize our modes of thinking, nature will do it for us, and will charge extremely high tuition for its schooling.

A New Eye on NatureAccording to the wisdom of Kabbalah, the cause of the present crisis lies in the rules that govern nature and how we, humanity, relate to them. As science now knows, nature maintains itself in constant harmony and balance. When this balance is threatened, nature utilizes mechanisms to restore it.The most fundamental of these is the principle of interconnectedness and unity. This principle determines that all parts of nature work not to sustain themselves, but to sustain the system as a whole. In other words, as uncanny as it may seem to the human eye, each element in nature cares for all other parts of nature, not for itself. This is the (real) natural way.Unlike humans, the drive to maintain balance is an inherent trait at all levels of nature: still (inanimate), vegetative, and animate. Humans are the only exception to the rule. Hence, in the entire universe, humankind is the only disruptive element. Therefore, mending human nature will automatically mend all other parts of nature, whereas continuing to disrupt nature's balance would inevitably prolong and intensify our troubles. Kabbalah teaches us that the only thing we can do to help ourselves and our world is to "work" on ourselves, to replace our desire for self-gratification with a desire for "system-gratification."

Dog Eat DogDay by day, we are growing more egoistic, increasing our alienation from one another and from nature's unity principle. Man not only exploits other humans, animals, plants, and minerals, but also enjoys building himself on the ruin of others. In doing so, we consistently breach nature's most fundamental law of unity. But nature cannot be changed; its rules are constant. Each breach of nature's rules triggers its balancing mechanism into action and prompts inevitable repercussions. And the more egoistic we are, the more powerfully we activate nature's actions to restore balance. This is why we feel that nature is taking revenge. But it is not; it is simply trying to correct the harm we're causing it.Nature does not, and cannot make concessions. We can keep burying our heads in the sand, but if we do we are likely to find our heads buried in the sand through nature's unsolicited act. Today, the clock is ticking and time is almost up. We can still pull ourselves out of the mud, but we must resolve to do it together. This will be our first attempt to operate like nature—for system-gratification.The AlternativeAs we previously mentioned, humans are the only species without the inherent drive to maintain balance, harmony, and reciprocity with the environment. Instead, we take what we want for ourselves. But since nature's rules are predetermined and unchanging, we have no choice but to "choose to unite and reciprocate voluntarily." This actually holds a benefit that is uniquely reserved to human beings: the ability to understand how and why nature works as it does, instead of blindly following its rules. The wisdom of Kabbalah offers a time-tested method of self-study and self-transformation. At its base is a coherent explanation of nature's laws, tested repeatedly by Kabbalists for almost five millennia. While the Kabbalistic terminology has changed over the years to adapt to the needs of the students at each time, its principles have remained as fixed as nature itself, since nature is what these principles describe. And while nature did not equip us with inherent capabilities for reciprocity, it did provide us with the means to acquire it through our own free will. Moreover, in doing so, the reward that nature guarantees to those who "graduate nature-school" is nature's omniscient and omnipotent capabilities. All it takes is our will to do so.

Okay, I'm done. Carry on...
