A little bit of Aesthetica Magazine history
Category: Art and Photography
Hi all
As our 20th issue approaches, I have been reflecting. Here goes:
Issue 20, which is the December/January issue is coming together with so many great features including: in literature, Jack Mapanje, Mary Gaitskill, and Carol Birtch. While in art, there are features on video installation, furniture design, as well as in depth features with Diana Scheunemann, Thomas Zipp, Will Tuck and urban art. Over in music is Gravenhurst, Pigeon detectives, Alabama 3, while in film we have Nick Broomfield and Phil Grabsky. It's really a sensational issue. I am very excited.
Also, it's our twentieth issue, which marks 5 years since Dale and I started Aesthetica Magazine. I can't believe it's been five years. Mind you, I do look a bit older. It's been one heck of a journey. I've written a bit of story of how it all came to be:
I started Aesthetica Magazine in 2003, when I was a student. The reason why is because of a publishing internship that I did on my BA course. I loved it. However, when I started my MA, the university didn't have a publication, so I started my own. Issue one was published in March 2003 with money that I secured from using an Egg credit card. I didn't really mind using a credit card, I thought, "what the heck, what's the worst thing that can happen, a little debt."
After the first issue was released, I needed to get stockists. I went to Borders, and the manager told me to contact the UK buyer, which I did, and from the first issue the magazine was stocked in York and Leeds. After the first issue, I was asked when the second one would be released, funnily enough, I hadn't thought about it, but a real demand started to grow when I developed a website. People were actually buying the magazine.
Having recently graduated, I started a full time job in education, but for some reason I couldn't give up Aesthetica. In 2005, I left my job and started working on the magazine full-time. I secured an office unit, which was a shoebox. Office furniture and PCs came from friends and Freecyle. Now, the serious work began, I started working 12 hours per day, 7 days per week. It was hard and a completely new way of life, but Aesthetica began to flourish, and the content and design improved. Readership went up to 10,000, then 25,000 and now to 45,000.
Aesthetica Magazine has differentiated itself from other arts magazine because it is the only arts publication to cover literature, visual arts, music and film in one single issue. The content is current and up-to-date. I have liaised with several major agencies, PR companies, galleries, and production companies to give my readers the most current information from the arts world.
Securing national distribution with WH Smith has had a major impact on my business. It is now taken more seriously, people want to advertise, subscribe, be in it, or simply read it. WH Smith was a major achievement. We're also working with major UK and international art fairs. I've found that collaboration is the best way forward.
Every week we have team meetings and set our goals for advertising, subscriptions and marketing. I have five members of staff and a variety of interns from the local universities, so we've left the shoebox office and have secured larger premises. With new PCs and six phones, productivity and moral are up! I love my job.

Rising Star: Aesthetica Magazine is the UK's definitive cultural arts magazine
Now at its 17th issue, the only cultural arts magazine in the UK to cover new writing, art, music and film in a single issue has once again broadened its scope. Incorporating a bold new design, exploring cutting-edge new fields of interest and featuring high profile practitioners from Tony Harrison to Brett Anderson. Aesthetica is fulfilling the predictions made by Mslexia magazine; "Aesthetica is sleek, energetic, progressive and destined to be one of the leading publications for the cultural arts."
Fulfilling its self-imposed remit to highlight the most innovative and exciting art throughout the UK, the new issue features exhibitions and festivals from the festival of Muslim Cultures to the Wellcome Collection. Inside there is the latest arts news, reviews, interviews and features. Tony Harrison, Patience Agbabi, Sujit Saraf and Xiaolu Guo give us their insight into contemporary literature. Reza Aramesh and Scotland's rising star Catriona Millar share their insight into contemporary British arts. Music features include interviews with Bat for Lashes, Brett Anderson, The Shins, Malcolm Middleton and Charlotte Hatherley.
