And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda

I want to share with you all something very special to my heart. My family has always, in one way or another, been involved with the military. My husband was a member of both the Navy and the Army. My son-in-law is in the Army. My son has done his share. My step-dad marches ever year, despite the fact he is partially crippled and legally blind. In short, this family is very military orientated.

25th April marks Anzac Day for us here in Australia. The school kids love it because it's a public holiday which means a long weekend this year. But it's more than just a holiday. Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. The acronym ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, whose soldiers were known as Anzacs. The pride they took in that name endures to this day, and Anzac Day remains one of the most important national occasions of both Australia and New Zealand. Just about every town, big or small, holds a parade. The military, the school children, all those who share the special memory of the Anzacs, march on Anzac Day. It's out time to honor those who dies in conflicts across the world.

I was listening to a show on television this week. A song came up and everything stopped as my husband and I sat there and listened to the lyrics. How poignant. It brought tears to my eyes and does every thing I hear it sung.

The song is called And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda

Read the lyrics and remember those who fought for us, not just here in Australia and New Zealand, but across the world. We have a lot to be thankful for.

The lyrics from Eric Bogle's song, written after observing an Anzac Day parade.

Now when I was a young man I carried me pack
And I lived the free life of the rover.
From the Murray's green basin to the dusty outback,
Well, I waltzed my Matilda all over.
Then in 1915, my country said, "Son,
It's time you stop ramblin', there's work to be done."
So they gave me a tin hat, and they gave me a gun,
And they marched me away to the war.

And the band played "Waltzing Matilda,"
As the ship pulled away from the quay,
And amidst all the cheers, the flag waving, and tears,
We sailed off for Gallipoli.

And how well I remember that terrible day,
How our blood stained the sand and the water;
And of how in that hell that they call Suvla Bay
We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter.
Johnny Turk, he was waitin', he primed himself well;
He showered us with bullets, and he rained us with shell –
And in five minutes flat, he'd blown us all to hell,
Nearly blew us right back to Australia.

But the band played "Waltzing Matilda,"
When we stopped to bury our slain,
Well, we buried ours, and the Turks buried theirs,
Then we started all over again.

And those that were left, well, we tried to survive
In that mad world of blood, death and fire.
And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive
Though around me the corpses piled higher.
Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over head,
And when I woke up in me hospital bed
And saw what it had done, well, I wished I was dead –
Never knew there was worse things than dying.

For I'll go no more "Waltzing Matilda,"
All around the green bush far and free –
To hump tents and pegs, a man needs both legs,
No more "Waltzing Matilda" for me.

So they gathered the crippled, the wounded, the maimed,
And they shipped us back home to Australia.
The armless, the legless, the blind, the insane,
Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla.
And as our ship sailed into Circular Quay,
I looked at the place where me legs used to be,

And thanked Christ there was nobody waiting for me,
To grieve, to mourn and to pity.

But the band played "Waltzing Matilda,"
As they carried us down the gangway,
But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared,
Then they turned all their faces away.

And so now every April, I sit on my porch
And I watch the parade pass before me.
And I see my old comrades, how proudly they march,
Reviving old dreams of past glory,
And the old men march slowly, all bones stiff and sore,
They're tired old heroes from a forgotten war
And the young people ask "What are they marching for?"
And I ask meself the same question.

But the band plays "Waltzing Matilda,"
And the old men still answer the call,
But as year follows year, more old men disappear
Someday, no one will march there at all.

Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda.
Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?

And their ghosts may be heard as they march by the billabong,
Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me?
– Eric Bogle

I just received notification that this cover has won the Best Cover for the 2008 NOR AWARDS fromNightOwl Romancein the Paranormal Erotic eBook section. All thanks go to the the fabulously talented Anne Cain. She’s an incredible artist.

What a fantastic way to start a day, but it wasn’t the only news I received. Lyn Cash and I just received our contract for Pandemonium, the second book in the Sexy Mythconception series coming out as a Lust Bite at Total-e-bound Publishing.
The first in the series was Hit And Misswhich came out on 24th March.

And to top off a fab week of news, I just found out my short story, Photo Finish, is one of five by Total-e-bound authors to be featured inScarlet Magazine in the UK in July.

Here at last

Wow, I can't believe how long it is since I've been in here. Unfortunately January/ February are our busiest months of the year here at the motel. That means not a lot of writing or computer time. So what's happened since last I was here?

I've had a new release with Changeling press. A christmas story called Mistletoe High.

Blurb:

What's the world coming to when a girl can get arrested for dealing mistletoe, aka happy juice?

When Christmas is declared illegal, Misty Toll finds herself dealing mistletoe to fund Santa's revolution to bring back Christmas. Except Santa's taking too much of his own product, Rudolph's red nose turns out to be an excess of Vodka, and there's a bunch of a rabid revolutionary elves on the run. Now she has the added problem of Zane Mason, the new man hired to work on the deer farm where she's hiding Santa's reindeers and where her secret stash of mistletoe grows.

What's a girl to do but go with the holiday cheer...

~~~
I've also had another release with Total-e-bound Publishing. WHO'S YOUR DADDY is an anthology with Summer Devon and Lyn Cash. My contribution is called Strategic Withdrawal.
Blurb:
'Strategic Withdrawal' by Alexis Fleming
WANTED: Sperm Donor 69. Tired of using a test tube? Sick of the sterility of the lab? If so, come join me for two weeks of red-hot lovin.' Satisfaction guaranteed!
Mandy Dodds wants a baby before her biological clock implodes. A withdrawal from a donor bank smacks too much of buying a baby for Mandy's sensibilities so she comes up with a plan. Track down Sperm Donor 69, the father of three clients' babies, and do things the old-fashioned way.Travis McCloud seems to be that man. But there's just something about him that doesn't add up.
What will Mandy's reaction be when she finds out Travis McCloud has been using her for his own agenda?
~~~

Besides that, I'm busy playing housekeeper here at the motel and working on my next releases. More about that next time.

Right now I'm going to say
ciao and head back to the laundry. Happy reading!

'Direct Deposit' by Summer Devon

Five years ago she and her husband had used him in a strange threesome that turned out to be less about passion than about an infertile couple's desperation. Now Zack Reese spotted Colleen Madison's name on a list of fertility centre clients he's supposed to interview for a story about some sperm donor. His curiosity, and his haunting memory of her glorious naked body, overcomes his reluctance to contact her.

Divorced and infertile - yet finally content with her life - Colleen is shaken when the man she'd unwittingly deceived re-enters her life. She can't forget that their one encounter left her wanting more. His re-entry into her life reawakens a passion she thought she'd lost years earlier.
