BACKLASH: HERE’S THE OFFICIAL NEWS...
Current mood: optimistic
Greetings! For those of you who care and/or don't care, here is the latest and official news from the ol' Backlash camp.. As many of you know Backlash bassist Danny Tallent was in a car accident in May that has left him with lots of physical and mental hurdles to overcome for quite some time. We've been putting off finding a permanent replacement until we've come to grips with what it is that Danny is going to have to do to get back into a normal routine and life. He has a lot of work ahead of him, and he is under great care and has made miraculous improvements since the accident..but as a band and a business we have to move on and forward....it doesn't mean we don't love or miss Danny, we do..and he has been in our thoughts and prayers for three months, and we're still involved in making sure he gets whatever he needs to help get him back on track. As far as we're concerned, the door is wide open if he should ever choose to come back after he is well enough to do so, but it's going to be a long process, and not an easy one for him...so we're stepping aside and moving on and giving him the time and space he needs..but we still consider him family, band mate, and a close friend.
In those three months we've had some very unique and talented bass players fill in..our thanks go out to Bob Hughes, Jason Stillwell, and Gene Morrow, who is currently our bass player in "THE WALL" shows and will continue to be until we bring that production to an end.
One bassist above all the rest who has filled in with us and has really fit the bill has been J from 12 Years Coming. He not only knows our cover material but also has learned the original material, and has flawlessly played with us at quite a few gigs over the summer. As much as we wished he would agree to play with us he has been committed to playing with 12 Years Coming..understandably so.
We're happy to announce that Joe Riley, the singer of 12 Years Coming, and J have closed the doors on 12 Years Coming and have together agreed to join Backlash, and you'll be able to see this line-up very soon. They bring with them the 12 Years Coming songs you know and love, along with some killer covers..and we're mixing all of that up with our originals and covers to bring you what we hope and think will be a rockin' show every night we play at a venue near you. We won't run out of material to play, that's for sure!
We hope that Backlash and 12YC fans, friends, families, and our collective venue owners will accept and embrace this demented union and support us as we begin to book shows for this fall and winter and into 2009.
As stated earlier we will continue to perform "THE WALL" shows with bassist Gene Morrow for those scheduled gigs as he has spent the last 2 months rehearsing and fine tuning "THE WALL" show with us. All of the rest of the regular rock and roll shows by Backlash will feature Shawn Ames, Ron Prothe, Brian McGuire, Joe Riley, and J.
We hope you're excited as we are...we're ready to bring the best rock show you can see in the Midwest and hope you can catch us soon at a venue near you. We'll have more related news and updates as we move along in the next couple of days and weeks.
Thanks for your support and big thanks to Joe and J...welcome to the fold! Let's rock...
Shawn / Backlash

Another brick and wish you were here...
Current mood: anxious
Greetings! Yeah...no pressure here, folks... Somehow this crazy WALL idea popped into our tiny little heads back in February and since dates were booked into July we had plenty of time to make everything work smoothly for the show...or at least that was the plan... No one could have foreseen what would happen to Danny and Ashley, and how our good friend and bass player, who was looking forward to seeing this production come to life, was going to miss playing it due to injuries. In his absence we've had around 4 bass players who wanted the part to play but schedules or other personal conflicts arose very fast. Call us crazy, but we didn't want to have to do this huge production everytime with a new bass player..the cues and music are going to be tough anyway..but we found a gentleman willing to do the duties, and he has no intention of playing any other sort of music with us, just The Wall, and he's gone the minute we hang up the bricks. Bass duties for this show fall on the strong shoulders of Gene Morrow, who is the full time bassist for Shot In The Dark, who are opening the first two shows with us. Gene is very talented, and after the first rehearsal playing the music last week we found him to be dedicated like we are to providing the best show possible. I feel horrible...I miss Danny not playing this with us, or any of the live shows. I miss his stage stomping and his attempt at singing in vocal registers not meant for human ears...I miss seeing him between Brian and I and how when the 4 of us were in tune with the moment how that magic made the band a monster and a grand force to be dealt with. I miss Danny...and I wish he was here to have fun with this...but I know his road to recovery is going to be a long one, and I'm so thankful that he is alive..the door is open for him if and when he can come back to us, and that is the question everyone's been asking me.."what are you going to do..??". The plan so far is this: we play these WALL shows out through July/August, and then the band will lock itself up in the studio and finish CD 4..you know, that project we've been working on for a year and a half? We'll play the bass parts and finish everything and release the record and see where Danny is at in his recovery, and also see where the band is at as far as creativity and desire. We feel that this cd is going to be the best one yet and we want to give it the promotion and send off it deserves, unlike the way "Tattooed Nation" got released without much fanfare between the band that recorded it and lack of desire by people it was created for. Musically, this new cd has old style Backlash elements in it but we've matured as a band and as people, and the music reflects it. I am definately going to see this project through...I have to, this needs to be heard! As for live shows, after August we'll decide where we are on that road, too. Never have I ever had to worry about the band being able to perform in the future..the calendar for Fall '08 is completely empty, waiting to find out what's going to happen. In a way, the band has been on the road non-stop forever, and a small break from the road for awhile won't be too bad, but our wives will be kicking us around and trying to get us out of the way, and I've already gone crazy trying to find things to do on evening where I should be on-stage, not catching up on things in the home life...it's all too wierd... Anyhoo, point of blog...time is ticking and The Wall show is coming together....it's definately the biggest thing we've ever tried to attempt, and so far everything is going well..we'll know more about our fate as we head into a massive dress rehearsal next week and actually have the space, crew, and time to actually put the wall up as we play...that's going to be awesome! More reports from the rehearsals soon, I have to get ready to travel to Marysville to do one with the boys now...stay tuned...thanks for your support...come see a WALL show.... Musiclly yours, Shawn

A much requested Backlash update (posted by Brian McGuire)
Current mood: hopeful
The Much Requested Update Note: I apologize to everyone that has been asking for some sort of update, for the wait. I actually wrote this on Sunday, while still in a sleep deprived haze. Then sat on it, out of respect, until I received an okay from Danny's family to post it. I will try to keep everyone updated as I can.
Unless you've been living under a rock or just simply haven't been on MySpace in the past week, you've heard that Backlash's bass player and friend Danny Tallent and his wife were in a devastatingly bad car accident early last Saturday. We don't know any real details of the accident, only that they were on their way home from Sabetha on a back road when they lost control of the vehicle and went off of the road eventually landing in the bottom of a dry creek bed. Being that it was a back country road they remained there for a very long time before they were discovered. Danny's wife, Ashley, was dead at the scene. Danny was alive but in critical condition and was Life-Flighted to a Topeka hospital.
Danny is still in the critical care unit of the hospital. Since he has been there he has undergone brain surgery to remove a blood clot and more recently a tracheotomy so the breathing tube could be removed from his throat before it caused any serious damage to his throat. They have also inserted feeding tubes into his stomach. He has remained unconscious the entire time since they were found.
All of this sounds very grim and discouraging, but there actually has been some encouraging signs. At first doctors feared that he would be paralyzed due to brain and spinal injuries, but he continues to move. They feared that he would be completely paralyzed down his left side but his left side moves on occasion, so now they think he may recover movement on both sides but his left side may be weak. For a while visitors weren't allowed to touch or speak to him because any stimulus caused agitation and his blood pressure to sky rocket. But now visitors are allowed to speak quietly while in the room. He is not comatose, only heavily sedated. He shows signs that he can sense when people are around him, because just the presence of a person in the room causes him to move around and his blood pressure to rise. He certainly moves around a lot, they've been having trouble keeping his clothes on him. He keeps taking them off, so he is definitely still Danny.
The biggest news, that I look at as encouraging, is that he's opened his eyes. Saturday morning while visiting, his sister told me that while she had been in the room with him he'd opened his eyes, seemed to look at her and then closed them again. This doesn't mean that he is or was conscious at all, but I see it as encouraging. And it would be nice to believe that he was conscious for that brief moment.
Ashley's memorial service was this past Friday in Sabetha. There was an extremely large turnout of friends and family. Generally I don't like funerals, and not for what would seem the obvious reason, but because the majority of the time they are treated as very maudlin and depressing affairs. I've always felt that funerals and memorials should be a celebration of one's life, not of their death. As a matter of fact, that is what Ashley wanted. My wife and Ashley were good friends and one night the subject of death and funerals came up (regarding the funerals we had attended in the past for friends of the band i.e. Mark Haines & Ira Farr). Ashley told Lisa that she didn't want people looking at a lifeless, bad interpretation of her. She said she wanted to be cremated and wanted everyone to be happy that she was going to a good place. Of course that can be a hard request to make, I've always said that funerals aren't for the dead, they're for the living. But they did their best to make her funeral/memorial a celebration of her life as opposed to a drawn out tear jerking downer. It's inevitable that we feel a loss, a void where a person's personality and spirit once occupied and interacted with us. We are always going to feel that empty space on occasion. Sometimes more than others. And some people will feel it more than others. But I think it's better that we should celebrate that spirit and how it effected us, not dwell on the lack of it's presence.
During the week following the news of the accident, Shawn, Ron and myself had to make the difficult decision of what to do in regard of the band and our booked schedule. Backlash is a band that has experienced a lot of deaths in the 'family'. But we're also a band that has prided itself in our perseverance and in the fact that out of 15 years we, the band, have only canceled three shows. In the past we have gone on-stage literally after burying a band member that afternoon, we have gone on-stage literally an hour after getting the news of a members death.
We're the band that doesn't cancel, we have played while multiple members on-stage were suffering body sprains, horrendous flu, abscess teeth, high temperatures or simply monster hangovers. We have played while our sound engineer was suffering from advanced cancer with roadies or band wives stationed near him to race him to the nearest hospital should he begin bleeding. When a tremendous storm collapsed the stage and destroyed the power amps at the ABATE Labor Day Rally one year, while every other band gladly took their money and went home, we were the band that said "We're here to play, give us a dry piece of ground and we'll run our own sound". And we wound up playing for five hours straight, without a break, in the beer garden. And we gave everyone one of the more memorable Rally shows in the past ten years.
So we had to make the decision of how to persevere yet another death in the 'family' and another fallen member. Basically we had to decide "What do we do now?" We tossed around several different options; playing as a three-piece, building a list of surrogate bassists or finding one temporary bassist until we find out what Danny's condition will ultimately be (whether he will be able to play again or not and how long it will be before he is able to play).
It's a shitty decision to have to make. You can't help but feel a little like a heel when you are making that decision. One thing that we all agreed on is that even if we do bring in a replacement bassist, their position is temporary and we need to make that known to them from the start. They are only temporary until we find out whether Danny will be able to play again. And if he is able to play again, that the moment he is ready to play, their tenure will be over.
This past weekend was the first time we had to play full shows without Danny and his absence was definitely noticeable. Friday night we played with a surrogate bassist which turned out to be a humiliating train wreck, it was the first time in years that I was embarrassed to be on-stage with a band. We saved the show by basically making ourselves a three-piece. Saturday night we played as a three-piece and although it was a better show (relatively speaking), Danny's absence was still noticeable. Both nights, in Danny's honor, we played an acoustic 'Wish You Were Here' with my bass standing alone in the spot where Danny would normally be. This was a request from Danny's family and one we willingly obliged.
Also both nights we placed a bucket at the front of the stage for donations to Danny and Ashley's families. These donations are being handled by the Prothes and J.D. Nash (who has also set-up a PayPal account for donations (the PayPal account is under aim2dabone@yahoo.com, if you make a donation at this account please mark it as Tallent Family donation). All of these donations are going directly to Danny and Ashley's families, until we set up an account (which can accrue interest). When Danny does come around it is going to cost a lot of money for his medical expenses, therapy (both physical and emotional) and to get back on his feet so to speak.
J.D. and others are working on other ideas to raise donations for the funds and as those ideas materialize we will post them on here. There was also talk of setting up a scholarship fund in Ashley's name, which would be a fitting memorial to her.
So what is Backlash doing now? We are fulfilling our remaining dates, we are not booking anymore at this moment. We have talked to other bass players to fill-in for the time being. We have two on-line for the moment; one for the cover shows and Wall shows and another for the two original showcase shows we have coming up. Once The Wall shows are complete we'll decide where to go from there. In a perfect world Danny will have recovered by then. But if it was a perfect world this wouldn't have happened in the first place.
This upcoming weekend will see Backlash playing with two separate bassists; Jason Stillwell (of Price Of Progress) on Friday and J (of 12YC) on Saturday at Dogstock.
We want to thank everyone for their understanding and condolences offered the past week. And we definitely wish heartfelt thanks to everyone that gave donations to the Tallent families this past weekend.
Although I've been very busy lately I will try my best to keep everyone updated. Again thank you for your understanding and support. Be safe.
Best wishes, Brian McGuire & Backlash

Backlash bassist Danny Tallent in critical condition: PLEASE READ
Current mood: sad
Backlash bassist Danny Tallent and his wife Ashely were in a car accident early Saturday morning near Sabetha. Danny is in critical condition in Topeka, and Ashely did not survive the accident. We were given the news today at the beginning of the Marysville Music In The Park in Marysville, and needless to say the band is in shock. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Danny and Ashley's family and we ask you to keep them in your thoughts and prayers as well. As of now the band is holding up fairly well with no clue as to what to do next. We have shows booked until the end of this summer, so we ask that you still support and be patient with us as we are once again in transition. The Wall shows scheduled for this summer will still go on, as we're sure that Danny and Ashley would still like to see the production come to life. Thanks to Jay from 12 Years Coming for sitting in on bass for our portion of the show today, along with our good friends from both Lost and Fates Design. Support from all of the bands was appreciated and needed, as we tried to decide whether to go ahead with the show or not, which we did..tough to do but we did it. We have some things to consider for the next few weeks and months concerning the band performing live, and as soon as we decide what our plan of action is we'll let everyone know through posts and bulletins. Thanks for your support, we hope to see you all again soon. Shawn, Brian, and Ron / Backlash

Isn’t this where..we came in?
Current mood: rockin
Greetings, dear readers! Here's what you might call our progress report, an update on our production of THE WALL... The "bricks" have been ordered and are being shipped as of this writing...150 white boxes that will be the main prop of the show. Shipped flat, these boxes on a nightly basis will be taken out, assembled, carried in, build the wall, knock it down, dissassemble them , take them back out, and load them flat again...night after night after night...hauling both band gear, sound, lights, and bricks in 2 trailers...good thing there are only 6 shows! At the biggest venue the wall should be around 20-25 feet long by about 15 feet high. We have our greedy little hands on a great light technician for our biggest show but we're waiting to hammer out the details and contracts with Washburn University before we can do any other planning. If we get the green light for this show and all the ducks are set in a row we have lots of surprises in store for that night, events that won't happen at club shows. Planning the production around the biggest show is a massive undertaking and we're finding out what it's like to be director/effects runner/sound engineer/ coordinaters, etc etc etc..it's more work than we planned on doing but so far everything is running smoothly as far as planning is concerned, actually trying to pull it off and have it timed right is another. Brian and I have been laying down tracks for the songs we can't perform as a 4-piece band live, and to make it even trickier we're having to sync it to animation...something we've never had to deal with before. The tracks are about as close to the original tracks as can be expected, and we've become quite handy in the sound reproduction and editing, finding all the little pieces and parts that go to make up the music...lots of little tiny things buried in each track that we're scratching our heads and going "...so...how do we make THAT sound..???". I have some incidental work to get done in the next few weeks and then all of the music is transfered to a Roland Workstation to be used live and the rest synced up to animation to be used as well. A $35,000 power point projector will be showing the animation in vivid color, so the sky is the limit on the sights you might be seeing...plans are wicked for this part, my friends. Starting the first weekend in June and all the weekends in that entire month will see the band rehearsing the music in practice sessions in Marysville, Kansas, with a final full dress rehearsal with all of the "bricklayers", actors, and full wall bricks on hand to run through the show as many times as it takes to get it close to being as perfect as can be expected. The first show is the one we originally got the idea to perform the show at all, in the tiny confines of The Boobie Trap in Topeka, Ks. We thought it would be a hoot to perform the biggest rock production in a small venue, but then we discovered that lots and lots and lots of people were interested in the show in other far away lands and places, and we also discovered that bigger places wanted it at their venues too, but the only real piece of the puzzle missing was to have a full blown production of it worthy of performing like it should be performed..a large stage with an all ages audience..so we've been on the lookout for such a place, and hopefully White Concert Hall will be that place. Some restrictions do apply, but right now it looks like we have full riegn of the stage, we just hope that an agreement can be worked out and everyone involved will be happy...especially the attendees who witness it! We know that the Pink faithful will be keeping a close eye and ear on the music and the production, in which we kindly reply "...ok!". We're all fans of the band and the album so we're not cutting corners..we intend on performing as close to the original 1980 version of the live show as humanly possible, just only 4 players instead of around 12...no puppets, no crashing planes, no touring crew of 100 or more that had 4 days to construct the massive shell that held the bricks..we have 4 band guys, around 6 helpers, a sound tech, a light tech, and about 4 hours of prep time before each show...it's our love of the production that's going to make this work..or at least, we hope it is!!! Many more props and gadgets are being considered to enhance the show, and confidence is high that this is actually going to work. We're also looking for a few sponsors for the show, so if you know of anyone interested send them our way..we'd love to strike a bargain wirh anyone interested in such an insane investment! The only real drawback from all of this is that our 4th cd has been shelved until after August 2008 so we can devote our time to this event. There are about 6 tracks finished and another 6 ready to be recorded, and money has been set aside to manufacture these the way they should be...in mass quantities and in factory made cases with full artwork and pressings...we believe that this might be our best sounding project to date, so we want the chance to put as much into it as we can...and we think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how much the band has matured and found a strong but recogniseable sound that seperates us from everyone else..it's going to be a cd worth having in your collection, I promise you! Last but not least, there are 5 WALL shows that will have opening bands in them. Joining us on the first half of the "tour" is SHOT IN THE DARK, the second half is FATES DESIGN, and the last show will see us joined by the legendary WARLOK. All of these band can be found on MySpace, give them a listen and support them as well. We're excited and thankful that these bands have agreed to join us into our decent into madness and hope they have as much fun as we plan on having..our biggest heartfelt thanks go out to them! All for now kids...I go to rest for a week of "day job" work and then right back into my nifty studio to finish loose ends for the show, with live shows on weekends thrown in to keep me sane. This week was our last weekend away from each other until July 4th weekend, and then the real insanity starts...we hope you'll join us for a few or all of them! Thanks for your support, keep an eye out for more updates and news to be released soon! Cheers! Shawn / Backlash

FINALLY! An update...
Current mood: creative
Greetings, faithful readers... I have some spare time on my hands so I thought I’d bring you up to date on the story so far... Julie and I moved into our new house on February 3rd and so far have enjoyed every minute of it. The last 2 months have found her and her mother decorating the house, and I must admit the place looks fantastic for what we’ve had to work with. With the exception of my studio and the family room (dubbed "The Man Cave") the whole house has a look and feel of a real dwelling. The dogs have gotten used to the new place and surroundings quickly, a lot faster than I thought they would. For the first time they can roam free in the backyard almost all day, enjoy laying in the sun, and not be tied down. They enjoy the space they have and seem to really enjoy the whole place overall. We’ve had some appliances break down but thanks to our home insurance they’ve either been replaced or repaired and we’re thankful we purchased it. Since I’m on some "down time" from the band we’ve managed to do some work on the backyard, making the patio space we have into a party space. We have a bar there, some lounge chairs, a bbq grill, a wooden trelace next to the patio that covers an black iron gate way that I bought a few years ago, covered it in ivy, and plans are to hang white party lights on the trelece and fence line for those parties and bbq’s we plan on having soon. We’re also making space for the tortiouse to roam free in the yard for the first time, and more plans for a flower garden and a veggie garden are underway. I finally sold my lawn tractor and aquired a push mower...strange to not be mowing 2 acres of land anymore..I haven’t pushed a mower in over 12 years so pushing one uphill every week ought to make me a buff looking lad. We’re planning a garage sale for May as we’d like to be able to park one of our two autos in there. My studio in the house is bigger and better than the last one, and it’s where I’ve been spending most of my time off..which brings me to the next subject.. The band had been working on music for Backlash cd 4 but we’ve decided to shelve it once again in order to get ready for the massive undertaking we’ve thrown upon ourselves in re-creating THE WALL show. The dates have been set, the "bricks" will be ordered soon, and we’ve even managed to aquire a projector to show graphics and animations on the wall during the show. In the studio I’ve been re-creating all of the incidental music and sound effects that make up a good portion of the album, and that itself has been taking a lot of time to do! The hardest, trickiest, and grueling part to re-create so far has been "The Trial"...it has all kinds of instruments that a keyboard just can’t create as well as the real thing, but I’ve been working hard to get the pieces to sound right..and I’m still working on it! For the Floyd faithful I think you’ll be surprised at how we’re able to pull of this show musically...we’ll be in rehearsal for the show the entire month of June with one day set aside for a "dress rehearsal" for all of the "brick layers", sound man, actors, and musicians to get together and time everything out and make the show as tight as can be, so in the meantime the band and I have been doing everything we can to get ready for what’s coming..you never really realise how much detail they put into recording that album until you sit back and listen and then try to re-create the sounds you hear...some are obtainable, some are created, some are just too out there to even begin to know how to make that noise, but once the production is stripped away it really is only a four piece band playing the music..it’s the genius of producer Bob Ezrin that makes the entire record shine...and I know this to be true as I’ve heard the original working demos for that album...if it weren’t for Mr. Ezrin, this might have been Pink Floyd’s biggest flop. On a less complicated note, for the first time since I’ve bought it back in 1995, my guitar has gone to the shop for a complete overhaul. The neck on it has been slowly losing it’s tonality in the high end, so for a good chunk of change I’m having new frets crowned on the neck and take some of the roundness off, which should make the guitar play like new and sound even better. All agree at the shop that for it’s age it’s in great shape, considering it’s never taken a good long break in the last 13 years to have any major work done to it. Call me crazy, but it feels really strange to not have my guitar sitting and waiting in the same room with me..I never leave it anywhere by itself, even at gigs...so leaving it for a week or so outside of the house is wierd to me..but I know it’s being handled with great care and I can’t wait to get it back and feel and hear how much better it’s going to sound. The wife and I are getting two small breaks this year..we’re going to see FISH, former lead singer of MARILLION, in Boulder, Colorado in June and then we are taking a trip with the dogs to Colorado Spring/Manitou Springs, Colorado for our first wedding anniversary in September. After that, if we can afford it, plans are in the making to go see MARILLION in Montreal, Canada in April 2009. I’ve never had to apply for a passport before, and from the looks of things I better start to learn French! Well, that should be enough news for now...I have to get back to doing music for the WALL show..that’s how I’m spending my free time! Hopefully this blog finds everyone safe and sane..thanks for your support and reading, see ya soon! Slainte Mhath! Shawn
