Cary was a pioneer and his influence on electronic music will continue to persevere well into the future. His music shaped my childhood through the likes of Dr. Who and the invention of the amazing VCS3 (the world's FIRST synthesizer) of which he played a significant role.
hello all.. huge news to report: alka is slated to appear alongside Roger O'Donnell (ex-the cure, thompson twins, psych furs) on his new release. (it's going to be huge and .. lovely.)
i'll let him tell the story, as it is his creation, i just helped out.. a little....
"Songs From The Silver Box" An intimate and private collection of sounds, melodies and rhythms. Intricately woven one thread at a time from a palette of shimmering sounds and beats. Electronic music in its most human and emotional form.
So here it is finished my new album. I just sent it to my label Great Society and they love it and have scheduled it for a September release. So we have 6 months to work out how to get this into peoples ears but the main thing is that its in my ears and I love it. My best friend Ian Wright is designing the cover as " it wouldn't be right " if he didn't and I can't wait to see what he comes up with. I am going in to master it next month with Guy Davie another good friend who is the only person I would trust with this job.
One of the main things I wanted to do with this record was to open it up and bring in other people. In 2006 I started co writing with an amazing Australian singer named Lenka, we were working on songs primarily for her but her direction changed and I was lucky enough to end up with two songs sung by her on the record. I asked another of my favourite artists to collaborate on some beats, Bryan Michael from Alka and it was a very interesting process which really inspired me. Of course an album of mine wouldnt be complete without Erin's voice on it and we will probably have two songs with her. - Roger O'Donnell (from his myspace page: www.myspace.com/rogerodonnell)

We all know, I’m sure, of the now classic and still frequently used vocoder.. but the voice coder, or VODER (Voice Operating Demonstrator), show in the below video is virtually unheard of today. With great skill and training one could actually construct and "play" words with touch-sensitive keys and a foot pedal. The VODER only produces two different sounds, explained in this very short but amazing video from the 1939 World’s Fair. Inflection and expression can be added depending on how the keys and pedal are played. The vocoder, on the other hand and for those of you who are not familiar, combines two signals, commonly an actual human voice and a synthesizer tone, to create robot-like voices. Both were originally intended for telecommunication purposes.
