CUSTOMS MAKES RECORD COCAINE SEIZURE
AT LUKEVILLE PORT OF ENTRY

LUKEVILLE, ARIZONA - U.S. Customs Service inspectors at the Lukeville port of entry made an enormous cocaine seizure Sunday night. Customs inspectors seized 1,886 pounds of the illegal drug. The seizure is the largest cocaine seizure ever recorded at the remote port and among the most substantial made by Customs officers working at various Arizona ports of entry. The estimated street value of the cocaine could be worth as much as $84,870,000.

The seizure was made at about 7:30 p.m. when a 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck entered the port from Mexico. The truck was towing a 24-foot Wellcraft Daycruiser boat. A Customs inspector at the primary inspection station noticed that the driver of the pickup was nervous while making his entry declaration. The inspector decided a thorough search was in order. The inspector began searching the vehicle and the boat. The inspector used an electric drill to probe the floor of the boat and found a hard white substance on the drill bit which tested positive for cocaine. Customs inspectors and special agents spent the next six hours removing 414 cocaine-filled bundles from the floor of the boat.

"Customs inspectors at the Lukeville crossing have consistently made notable marijuana and cocaine seizures over the years but the sheer magnitude of Sunday night's seizure is unprecedented," said Donna De La Torre, Director of Field Operations for the Arizona Customs Management Center in Tucson. "Almost one ton of pure cocaine is not going to get to the streets and playgrounds of America because of the dedication and perseverance of the Customs inspectors at Lukeville."

Customs special agents arrested two residents of Buckeye, Arizona, in connection with the failed smuggling attempt. They are 35-year-old George D. Rackley (driver) and 43-year-old Cynthia D. Kolb (passenger). The two are expected to make their initial appearance in federal court in Tucson today. Two minor children traveling with the couple were turned over to a relative.

Over the last four years, Customs officers at the Lukeville crossing have made 10 cocaine seizures, confiscating 1,656 pounds of the drug. In fiscal year 1998, Customs officers at all Arizona locations seized 8,346 pounds of cocaine in 136 seizures.

The seizure is the latest large cocaine bust Customs officers on the southwest border have made in recent days. Customs special agents in Laredo, Texas seized 715 pounds of cocaine on Friday. Customs inspectors in El Paso made separate 1,020-pound and 213-pound cocaine seizures on Wednesday.
