prepping for the playa :: Burning Man ’08
Current mood: inspired
We head out to Black Rock City in Nevada this week - for the ever-expanding annual Burning Man Festival. The theme this year is "AMERICAN DREAM" . . . and I think there may be more than 50,000 participants this year, based on camp reports...
"the perimeter fence has grown from 7 miles long to 9 miles long. Now, all you geometry buffs have probably already figured out that's ... well ... a lot bigger. The inner playa is much bigger too ... the distance from the Man to the Esplanade Road has grown from 2,200' to 2,700', making the length of the Esplanade itself 2,500' longer. Getting the picture?"
I am performing at dawn (6AM) at the Center Camp Performance Stage in Black Rock City on Sunday morning Aug 31 after the burn! So glad to welcome the transition from night to day . . . ;)
...and one more cool thing - (as I will be singing "MARY" in this early morning hour) - I just found out how Burning Man all began! Larry Harvey & Jerry James built & burned a wooden man effigy on Baker Beach in San Francisco on the summer solstice in '86, following a tradition begun by MARY Grauberger, in regular solstice circles. It moved to Nevada in 1990.
************* Burning Man is an annual art event and temporary community based on radical self expression and self-reliance in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. LEAVE NO TRACE - radical sustainability is practiced as well. "Trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind." It takes its name from the ritual burning of a large wooden effigy on Saturday evening. The event is organized by Black Rock City, LLC. In 2007, 47,366 people participated in The Burning Man Project.
Stories from the playa coming soon... Looking forward to the adventure...
Namaste, Amy

Wed 8/6 The Derby 8PM, Amazon Radio & BURNING MAN!
Category: Music
Good news! I just found out my music was featured again on Amazon Radio (WKPN CT / WKPM NY) this past weekend. Thank you, Pam & Amazon!
Wednesday night, August 6th, 2008, at 8PM, I am going back to my roots and performing a solo, mostly-acoustic set w/Serena, my trusty Yamaha S90 synth keyboard, at The World Famous Club Derby in their newly redesigned VIP room.
Shout it Out Promotions & TK Promo present: *AMY CLARKE* w/John M., Rainfall, Cian, Beth Jean, and more... WED AUG 6 2008 8PM, $8, 18+ THE DERBY VIP Room 4500 Los Feliz Blvd. Los Feliz, CA 90027 www.clubderby.com
I am pretty excited to premiere a brand new song and to play a new Ani Di Franco cover I have not yet tried out. It will be a great night of music!
Though I was accepted to showcase in the Indiegrrl! Conference for Women in The Arts in VA this year, timing & circumstance is keeping me on the West Coast, so I am just surfacing for this timely occasion at The Derby, then back into recording studio before taking off for the Burning Man Festival in the Nevada desert at the end of August! Please arrive by 7:45 for parking (valet and on-street available)- I look forward to seeing you there and sharing new music!
P.S. Did you know you can get yummy food (salads, sandwiches, etc.) from the attached restaurant Louise's and bring it in to the VIP room at the Derby? Well, you can ;)
P.P.S. Did you also know there is a special archaeo-astronomical event during my set? The Summer Cross-Quarter. So be on time! www.archaeoastronomy.com
P.P.P.S. Thanks to everyone who came out for the Gaia Grove concert at Tangier. We made a nice-sized donation to The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation and had a wonderful evening of music. ;) www.gaiagrove.org for pics of the event...

South Park Music Tour in Colorado!
Just got back into LA from a fun music festival in Colorado - the South Park Music Tour! Highlights included the most gorgeous scenery, good friends to stay with, a great set on a nice outdoor stage, CDs sold, many new wonderful bands, musicians, songwriters, and music lovers befriended. Another fun part of the festival included the Songsalive! co-writing session in which I was paired with Huck, the lead singer from the rock band Inelements and Amy Mathesius of Amy & The Rock Sisters and we managed to crank out a great song in under two hours titled "Changing The World" which we then performed later in the evening at The Fairplay Hotel along with the other songwriters/musicians. Photos and more to come . . . xoxo, Amy

STUDIO TIME
Studio Time! Taking things into my own hands...after David Kershenbaum (Grammy Award Winning Producer/Tori Amos, Tracy Chapman, Joe Jackson) expressed interest in my Belmont Blues song, and I played many of my other songs for him at my house, we were both in agreement that a real grand piano was vital for many of the tracks, so I explored all around Los Angeles...
And I have fallen in love! This time, with the grand piano at 4th Street Recording! This "groovy little hideout" just blocks from the Pacific Ocean has a wonderful Yamaha grand piano (Fiona Apple recorded demo here) with a response and touch that I just adore. The studio owner Kathleen Wirt is down to earth and tremendously cool, and with Colombian rock star Sejo Navajas of the Vicious Licks engineering the piano recording sessions, I have been in excellent hands. Here are some shots from first day on the keys on the scorpfaery blog...check out my Brooklyn shirt! NYC in the house ;)
www.scorpfaery.com
Then I spent some time with my friend Steve Leavitt (Don't Call Us Tori) at THUD Studios in North Hollywood CA cutting some vocals and making a rough mix of one of the tracks "HER STORY (Mary)". THUD is owned by Jeff Abercrombie from the band Fuel, and we had a blast catching up with stories about the East Coast including the DC-Balto-Philly alternative music scene in the 90's, HFStivals (99.1 WHFS, you will always be in my heart) at RFK stadium in DC, Nation, and much more.
We had a blast!
There is a rough mix of HER STORY (Mary) up in the player. More to come...
