The Toledo Punks Reunion -Toledo Blade Article
Current mood: busy

Article published Thursday, May 31, 2007
Reunion concert to relive Toledo's punk-rock heyday

By DAVID YONKE
BLADE STAFF WRITER

For punk-rock fans in Toledo in the 1980s, it wasn't just about the music. It was about finding friends and plugging into a thriving scene.

"When I was about 16 years old, a few of my friends and I were looking for something other than Top 40 music. We were kind of looking to fit in somewhere. We didn't really fit in at our high school," said Amy Frilot.

She found what she was looking for at Toledo rock clubs like the Cypress Lounge, Frankie's Inner-City Lounge, Asbestos, Kidstown, and Club Stain.

Tomorrow night, that punk-rock heyday is being rejuvenated with the first-ever Toledo Punk Reunion concert at Frankie's. Doors open at 9 p.m.

Headlining will be 1980s punk band the Stain, the Mystic Records recording artists whose original lineup will get together for the first time in more than 20 years.

Also in the show are John Stabb of Washington, who led the punk-rock group Government Issue; current Toledo rock group Fast Piece of Furniture, featuring drummer Jeff Nelson from the influential punk band Minor Threat; modern punk rockers CL1, and Louisville punk group Stoner Moms.

Frilot, now 36, moved to Chino Hills, Calif., after graduating from St. Ursula Academy in 1989, but has kept in touch with the punk-rock fans of her teen years.

She decided to organize the reunion concert after starting a group on the Web site www.MySpace.com last year called "Toledo Punk."

"A bunch of people joined and I kept getting messages saying, 'Thank you for setting this up, I wouldn't get to talk to so-and-so unless you had set up the group.' That made me feel really good," Frilot said. "Then one of the participants decided to start a petition to get the original lineup of the Stain back together for a reunion show."

Jon Stainbrook, leader of the Stain who plays drums and sings, said that when Frilot told him about the fan petition, he thought it would be impossible to convince the original singer, Scott Law Snyder, to come back for a night.

"He left the band 20 years ago, he's married, he's got kids, and he sells real estate. I thought, 'Never in a million years is Scott going to do it,'•" Stainbrook said.

But Snyder agreed. The rest of the original Stain lineup will feature Mike Moore on guitar, Stephen Wooley on bass, Brien Thompson on drums, and Stainbrook on drums and vocals.

"This is like a dream show, and Amy dreamed it up," Stainbrook said.

Frilot said she went to her first punk rock show in 1987 at Stainbrook's invitation.

"It turned out to be our social scene. We felt like we belonged to something. And it was a thriving scene back then," she said.

Among the famous national bands she saw in Toledo were Fugazi, the Dead Milkmen, and GWAR.

"We met a bunch of interesting people and the thing was, there were kids from all walks of life," Frilot said. "There were artist kids, shy kids, musicians, even some of what you would call the popular kids. They'd all turn out for the shows and the music brought us together. While other kids were getting drunk at house parties, we were experiencing these legendary bands in a nonalcoholic setting."

The Toledo Punk group on MySpace now has 209 members, she said, and some of them are scattered all over the nation and world, including Texas, North Carolina, England, Japan, and Taiwan.

She is hoping to see many of them at the show tomorrow night.

"This is better than a high school reunion. This was our social scene back then," Frilot said.

Toledo Punk Reunion will be tomorrow at Frankie's Inner-City Lounge, 308 Main St., with admission $5 for those 21 and over and $7 for those 18 to 20. Doors open at 9 p.m. Information: 419-693-5300 or online at www.frankiesinnercity.com.

Good Gawd! It's Iggy!

Here it is 20 years later....but finally I get to see Iggy Pop. The first time I "almost" saw Iggy Pop, he was touring with The Pretenders in 1987-88. My friends Renee & Noreen and I had concert tickets and were planing to go together. Then! They canceled the show....I'm not sure why maybe it was an overdose of peanut butter. Babumpah! Ok...not funny, ey? Anyway, on my birthday, yes, Tuesday, April 24...I went to the Jimmy Kimmell Live taping in Hollywood. And The Stooges played. Pretty cool....and free. Lots of young punk rock kids were there and actually had a mosh pit going...and they were crowd surfing too. Why do I feel like an old lady?

Iggy's 60 now. Same age as my mom will be in May. Beauty.

Also...another groundbreaking thing happened that day...I went to Hooters for the first time. Not bad...I must say. But the tank tops cost $30.00...isn't that a tad expensive?

well...dolls...see ya later!

My Brain

Brain Lateralization Test Results
Right Brain (50%) The right hemisphere is the visual, figurative, artistic, and intuitive side of the brain.

I actually knew I used both sides of my brain.  I love being artistic but I excel at accounting.  Am I just an oxymoron?  (I know....it's too easy!)

After Roller Derby Bout
Current mood: excited

No practice the week after the bout. I wasn't allowed to skate in the bout because of my inexperience...so I am ITCHING to get back! MUST. SKATE. ROLLER. DERBY. STYLE. Yay, it's almost Monday!

Regarding the bout....the turnout was AWESOME.  Lots of people.  My friends Danielle & Craig showed up with their friends, Kenny & Andrea.  They said they had a lot of fun.  Also, a friend from work, Steve & his wife showed up.  I didn't see them though...  Next time!  I sold some merchandise...Shawn helped out too. Walked around like a cigarette girl with candy, water, candy & gum cigarrettes, matches, etc.  Us Sirens encouraging kids to smoke candy cigarettes that is!  Fun time for all!

Smooches!
