Latest Paintings and Musings
Category: Art and Photography
Umm. Yes, it HAS been a while. Here's my most recent paintings, completed last month.
This one is titled "The Purple Martins". Oil on masonite, 18x24.
This one is "She Longed to Run With the Herd". Oil on masonite, 19x26.

And this is "She was my Own Jane Grey". Oil on masonite, 24x30. The opening was last week and I sold some more stuff, which is always a good thing. These were pretty well-received. So now I'm working on a piece about a naturalist's wife in the 1850's and several other 19th century New England pieces. One has a wrecked whaling ship in it. I'm kinda digging the research I've been doing for these new ones: information on ships, clothing, hair, wallpaper designs, etc. I'm building up quite a digital morgue. I'm so damned grateful for computers and the internet right now--I can't imagine how difficult this would be without them. I'm trying to get permission from the toy museum to come in and photograph antique dollhouse interiors to paint from--I'm endlessly fascinated with them and dioramas, as well. So I've got all this fodder, but time to myself is so scarce I don't know when I'll be able to squeeze it all in. And I've been sewing a lot lately, too. I'm working on a tweed coat with a velvet collar and some antique petticoats which I'm dyeing and cutting down to reasonable lengths, and also this rockin' blouse from this 70's pattern I thrifted. And of course I'm baking at least once a week and trying hard to be domestic. Laundry, cleaning, bleagh. And being mommy and wife in the bargain.

A page for Esther
I wanted to have a place for some pictures of the little bird. She's growing so fast and changing so much... Right now she's a bit disappointed because she has no tail--she tugs on the cat's tail and pats her own butt sadly. Sorry, my girl, but believe me, you wouldn't want a tail. Anyway, these pics are from Dec and Jan mostly. Hard to believe she'll be two in April.

My little corner of the world
It's so nice to have (almost) a functioning studio again after several months. I'm nearly ready to begin painting, just about everything has found a home, my clutter has been organized to my satisfaction, and nearly every blank wall space has been filled. I think I suffer from "horror vacui." Ricky came up the other night to hound me and remarked,"Oh there's a spot there that's empty." To which I replied,"Oh, no, it's not--that space is for another bookshelf and sorter." And then he gave me this look and said,"Um, I was being SARCASTIC..." So here's some photos of my very nearly completed space, with additional decorating done by my child (installation work strewn all over floor).
I've got befores and afters! (Cue gray cat piss carpet and nasty yellow and purple paint.) Now it's all creamy whites and pale greys and pale painted floorboards.

I've always liked "stuff" and though it might make a lesser man (or woman) cringe, I'm really comfortable surrounded by all my crap. It's the perfect environment in which to paint--full of ideas and bits of inspiration. Sigh. Every girl needs a place of her own.

Arrival of the Crows
It's happened every autumn I've lived in KC--when the leaves are mostly gone and the colors of October have turned to the ashen hues of November. You know winter is close when the crows move back into town. They move in huge groups (murders, so delicious a name!), circling the houses and trees, cawing and wheeling. It always makes me feel nice and shivery. And today a monster storm was rolling in from the west and the crows were doing their thing over my house and here's some snapshots. The dead end of fall makes me feel especially silly and gothy. That's when I find myself listening to Dead Can Dance and pondering dark thoughts. Heehee. Just of an artsy nature--not committing any heinous acts, honestly.

Damning Secrets and Party Favors
Here's two new pieces that are on display in the Blue Gallery of KC. This one is titled "Damning Secrets and Arcane Mysteries are Revealed." it's oil on masonite. Sorry for the shitty pics--the good ones are on film and haven't been developed yet.

And this one is "Party Favors." I apologise again for the bad photo, but at least you can get the idea. It's also oil on masonite.

No thugs at our house!
We have a house! We closed today and are in debt well past our eyeballs. We got our loan YESTERDAY. After nearly six weeks, our loan broker finally figured out what loan would be best and found us a lender. AND I signed a contract for the Blue Gallery yesterday and I will be part of the upcoming anniversary show NEXT WEEK. So I had two pieces completed and one more very nearly done that must be delivered in the next few days. Too much going on--my head might explode. And I bought Esther a potty training chair and she thinks it's hot shit, pardon the pun. I can't get her off the damn thing. I feel kinda dizzy from all the excitement (or maybe that's because I haven't eaten today yet, hahaha). I feel incredibly generous today--if I were at a bar right now I'd probably buy every sleazebag a drink.

Paintings!
Here's a handful of fairly recent paintings (last couple of months or so). The resolution isn't very good on these--looks like a lot of detail is lost, but at least you can get an idea. This one is called "Trollaukin," which is a Norwegian word meaning "possession by trolls," or, archaically, "possession by spirits."

This one is titled "Lost in the Woods, Trailed by a Madman."
And here's one I really like. It's currently hanging in our bedroom. It was one of those simple paintings that went really quickly and, in spite of its simplicity, I think it works. Its title is "Once I was Lost" (after a Low song).
