26
(music: S. Poltz, lyrics: A.
Marina)

And the days roll one into the next
I'm almost twenty-six
Remember just the other day
You stopped the car right on the freeway
You made me promise to shut up
You said you'd only say this once
Which I believe and so I wait

And listen to you sigh and say,
"You just don't get it, do you
No, you just don't' get it do you, babe?
You're gonna be so huge, so huge someday"

Which I believed
And so I wait

And the days roll one into the next
And Christ, I'm twenty six

free download, stream, shows with Tristan Prettyman, Jason Mraz, and so much news it HURTS

Thanks to all of you for emails of support both for my big career change (leaving my post as midday DJ at FM94/9) and, more personally, about my dear grandmother who passed away last month. She had a pretty kick-ass life, playing piano professionally from the age of 14 to her last days on earth at the age of 99--may we all be so lucky!--so, it's in her spirit that we get the show back on the road...

dig this:

RELEASE DATE!
My album comes out NOV 18 on Chop Shop Records. It'll be called Slow & Steady Seduction, Phase II.
You should be able to buy it everywhere come NOV 18, and in celebration of it being all mixed and mastered, I have made Move You (SSSPII) downloadable on my myspace page, so have at it!

You can also stream the durrrty rocker I wrote with Brian Karscig and Jason Hill from LouisXIV. It's called Afterparty at Jimmy's and it's up on there, too.

THIS THURSDAY - SHOW W/ JEREMY ENIGK @ CASBAH, San Diego

Yep. Opening for Jeremy Enigk (Sunny Day Real Estate/ Fire Theft).
Doors: 8:30
Show: 9:30pm.
BUY TIX HERE. Don't blow it.

MUSIC AWARDS

I was nominated for a San Diego music award for Best Pop. (I think this means I need to get a headset mic and learn how to lip sync while grinding up on some breakdancer dude). In any case, I'm honored and excited, so...

ALBUM RELEASE DATE and SD Music Awards!

So, assuming all goes as scheduled, my full-length album will be out NOVEMBER 18TH on Chop Shop records. Mark thine calendars!

As mentioned before, most of the album was produced by Brian Karscig (Louis XIV) and features one dirty sexy mess of a collaboration ("Afterparty at Jimmy's") with the lads from Louis and two songs produced by Britt Daniel from Spoon (one of which we wrote together--"Drop Dead Blues"). It also features a cover of Waters of March (Aguas de Março) by Antonio Carlos Jobim.

I can't wait for you to hear it.

On another note, I just got word that I was nominated in the Best Pop category at the San Diego Music Awards. Check out all the nominees here. I'll be performing live at the music awards on the 17th of September.

Thanks to ALL.

Unfortunate cancellation of July 2008 tour dates

Deepest apologies to those of you who had planned to attend the remaining tour dates in Glasgow and Sheffield, at the Secret Garden Party Festival and in NYC.

While on tour, I received the sad news that my dear grandmother had passed away so I flew home to be with my family. She was 99 years old and had been a professional piano player since the age of 14. She continued to gig 3 times a week until her very last breath and was my inspiration and the light of our lives.

I can't thank you all for the kind words of support and for understanding. I will be back soon to all those cities soon--promise.

Love to you and yours,
AM

Margie

My little Margie
I'm always thinking of you, Margie
I'll tell the world I love you so
Don't forget your promise to me
I have bought a home and ring and everything

For Margie, you've been my inspiration
Days are never blue
After all is said and done
There is really only one
And that's Margie
Margie, it's you

After all is said and done
There is really only one
Oh Margie, Margie, it's you...

Anya opens for Dandy Warhols tonight (7/23) in London!

Well, I didn't anticipate this happening, but I just added another London gig...

TONIGHT with the Dandy Warhols!

After a nice long dinner of oysters, fish soup, and copious amounts of vino with pal Courtney Taylor of The Dandy Warhols, I was offered the opening slot of their gig later tonight (7/23) @ Shepherd's Bush Empire. My set is from 7:20-7:50pm...early, I know, but I couldn't pass it up. It's the Dandys after all...

if you do this by FRIDAY, i will bake you cookies...

Hey, kids.

I'm writing you all in hopes you can help out with this very, very important cause. My very dear friends Bradley Blair and his partner Ron Woodward are about to embark on the AIDS/Lifecycle ride this Friday. They (along with Brad's father) are riding their bicycles 545 miles for a solid 7 days (!) from San Francisco to Los Angeles for this cause.

Every dollar they raise goes directly to the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation to help the community get access to health care, life saving meds, a safe, clean place to stay, food, and so on.

No amount is too small. Donations of $5 are important and appreciated. If you would take a minute (it literally took me 60 seconds) to pledge a donation in their name that would mean the world to me and to them.

Thanks for considering it and thanks for making a difference!

mailbag results, LP2 update, vail film fest, hott links

(photo: the fetching sarah fletcher)

So.

I’ve been extremely out of touch and for this I apologize. Blame it on Iraq or Barack or the return of The Hills. More appropriately, blame it on the music. It always comes down to that, doesn’t it? In any case, we here at Anya Marina Enterprises took a dip into the burgeoning mailbag and thought we’d answer your queries. So, hold on to your trousers--there is a lot to cover:

Dear Anya,
What the fuck is up with your album? You said you’d be done with it soon. I heard you were off the air from 94/9 for like two weeks but I still haven’t heard any new songs. Can we at least have some proof that you’re actually recording and not, say, abusing prescription medication or shopping at the mall?

-Andrew in Fairbanks, Alaska

You bring up excellent points, Andrew, and thanks for your passion and candor. I’ve been working steadily on LP2...It’s been a dream come true so far, being able to work with some of my favorite people and players: Brian Karscig, Mark Maigaard and Ray Suen (Louis XIV), Britt Daniel (Spoon), Scott Russo from Unwritten Law (who worked on Miss H), Daniel Crawford, Matt Gorney, Shaun Cornell (Dirty Sweet) and the great Gilbert Castellanos on trumpet to name a few. I can’t wait for it to be finished so you can hear it...I’m thinking it will be out this Summer or early Fall. For visual proof of actual recording taking place, visit the photos section (i.e. "stoods").

Dear Miss Marina,
Are you playing any shows outside Southern CA anytime soon? My wife and I are music-enthusiasts, but we live in Colorado.
Thanks,
-Douglas in Vail, CO

Holy shit, Douglas! I can’t believe you wrote just in time for the Vail Film Festival! ( http://www.vailfilmfestival.org/ ) I’ll be there THIS VERY WEEK with fellow Hotel Cafe cronies Greg Laswell, Jay Nash, Brian Wright and Buddy. Come out!

We are so totally the apres ski entertainment:

Vail Film Festival - Vail, CO:

Dear Anya,
I find that the wait between Miss Halfway (2006) and LP2 is too long. Is there a sonic appetizer or palate cleanser you can offer to tide us over? Also: do you enjoy offal?
-Chris in Lansing, MI

Hi, Chris.
Funny you should mention offal, as I did ingest some tripe in the last month by accident. When ordering shrimp and vegetable pho at my local Vietnamese noodle house, I realized that I had neglected to pronounce shrimp like shrimp, because when I got my order for shrimp pho, what I actually got was TRIPE pho.
Huh, I thought to myself, stomach lining....I can do this.

It actually wasn’t bad although I wouldn’t repeat the experience (in fact, I’ve gotten really good at pronouncing shrimp correctly when I call up the pho place). Also, I recently enjoyed some blood sausage and beef bone marrow in London (see myspace pix) and it was quite possibly the most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten.

But I digress.

To get back to your question, Chris, yes, you can totally buy TWO NEW SONGS on iTunes right now!

Get "Move You" and "Not a Through Street" while you can. These versions no longer exist in any other format and will not appear on LP2 in that state. Collector’s item, y’all!! Buy HERE.

Anya,
Whattup, beeeeeyotch!
I wanted you to know that even though I think your mailers can be way obnoxious and self-serving, me and my friends, like, FULLY love it when you give us a rundown of your favorite, like, websites and books and shit...so, hook a sistah up! What are you reading or listening to or whatever?

-Your Mother (Anya Sr.)

Um.
OK, so, yes....here are some great books, albums, and websites to check out:

Dean Wareham’s Black Postcards

I’ve had a girl-crush on Beth Lisick since she was a spoken-word babe and baker. This is before she was wearing a banana suit, handing out fruit in San Francisco. I think she still has the banana outfit, but now she’s kind of a big deal. Go Beth! Get her book: Helping Me Help Myself

While we’re on the topic of pretty women, my co-blogging sushi pal TP has a new single out. Get it
