RIP Stan Winston 1946-2008

RIP Stan Winston 1946-2008
MALIBU, CALIFORNIA: Make-Up and SFX master STAN WINSTON died on Sunday (June 15th) evening after a 7 year battle with multiple myeloma. He was 62.

R.I.P. STAN WINSTON (April 7, 1946 - June 15, 2008)
Winston was responsible for many of the most iconic creatures and characters of the last two decades in TERMINATOR, PREDATOR, EDWARD SISSORHANDS, FRIDAY THE 13th III, THE THING, JURASSIC PARK, ALIENS, PUMPKINHEAD... And that is just the short list. He was considered by many to be of the same stature as Jack Pierce, and in fact recreated several of Pierce's most famous creations in THE MONSTER SQUAD, with some of the best renditions we have seen of those monsters on screen since the classic days of Universal Studios. His most recent film projects were building the suits for IRON MAN, as well as work on INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL. He had won 4 Oscars for his work and received numerous nominations.
He had his start in the early 1970's with such films as MANSION OF THE DOOMED, DOCTOR BLACK AND MISTER HYDE, THE BAT PEOPLE, GARGOYLES (TV series) and many others that some people in the industry would have found an embarrassment and in time and given stature would have tried to forget, but he was proud of all of his creations and the learning experiences that helped him evolve. He was quoted as saying: "My mistakes, whether anybody else sees them or not, I go, you know what, this could have been more real, I could have done this differently. You learn."
While many of his contemporaries had fallen by the wayside the last several years (mostly due to CGI), Stan Winston was constantly reinventing himself, even making the step to directing and producing several films.
Though he resisted talking about his sickness outside his intimate circle of friends, word had circulated for quite some time that Winston was ill. He was consolidating his special-effects company, The Stan Winston Studios and was in the transition of selling it off to the senior department heads. He was also selling many of his most famous props in recent years. He was also one of the founders of the computer effects company Digital Domain and was a great proponent of marrying both physical and computer generated effects into one seamless illusion, rather than relying on only one or the other.
He died peacefully in his Malibu home on Father's Day, in the company of his family. He is survived by his wife Karen, son Matt Winston (the actor), daughter, brother, and four grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, re requested that donations may be made to the Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research, Free Arts for Abused Children, or the United States Fund for UNICEF.

Movie about the stem cell issue

Doctor writes movie about stem cell research
Body: KANSAS CITY — Dr. Shelley Chawla is tired of watching his patients suffer.

And Chawla, a neurologist in Topeka, fervently believes that some of the suffering he sees while treating chronically ill patients could be eased by embryonic stem cell research, which has been delayed in the U.S. by political and religious opposition.

Two years ago, Chawla's frustration prompted him to write a book that addresses the embryonic stem cell controversy through one fictional family's struggles with the issue. The book led to a screenplay, which is to become a film called "Hope," shot in the Kansas City area and New Delhi, India, last year.

"Hope" centers on a conservative U.S. senator who opposes embryonic stem cell research. That belief is tested when his son is left a quadriplegic after an ugly crime, and the senator faces intense pressure from his family to take him to India, where stem cell research offers hope. But the senator knows that course would likely cost him his constituents' support.

"The point of the movie is to put the whole issue in a personal perspective," Chawla said.

"All of these people saying no (to the research), what would they say if they need it some day?"

While Chawla passionately supports the research, the movie leaves it uncertain whether the senator's son is taken to India or to a rehabilitation clinic in the U.S.

Rich Ambler, of Ambler Films in Fairway, Kan., directed the U.S. leg of the story and said the ambiguous ending was important.

"The audience is going to be divided on whether they're pro and con anyway, so why not leave it that way?" Ambler said.

"Why hit them over the head and say this is how it must end?"

iDream Independent Pictures, based in London and Mumbai, India, is distributing the film. iDream specializes in independent films from India that have the potential to reach worldwide audiences, such as "Monsoon Wedding" and "Bend it Like Beckham.

"

"Hope" was screened in early April at the MIPTV multimedia market in Cannes, France, where thousands of TV, film and digital media buyers search for independent films to support. It also had two screenings at the Cannes Film Festival sales market in May.

Chawla, 43, a native of India, based part of the story in that country because embryonic stem cell research is being conducted there and in other parts of the world, where he said Christian conservatives do not have as much political influence as they do in the U.S. Many of the investors in his film were Indian doctors, who helped raise about $500,000 for the film.

Supporters contend that embryonic stem cell research has shown the most promise for growing replacements for damaged tissue, which could lead to treatments for myriad diseases including diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and spinal cord injuries.

However, opponents of embryonic stem cell research believe that procedures that extract stem cells from human embryos end lives because the embryos are destroyed.

Dr. Lori Buffa, a pediatrician from St. Peters, Mo., is chairwoman of the Missouri group Cures Without Cloning, which supports ethical and promising stem cell research but believes using human embryonic stem cells is unnecessary. She said other research methods, such as use of adult stem cells or direct reprogramming of stem cells, are effective and do not require the expense or raise the ethical dilemmas associated with embryonic stem cell research.

"There are multiple methods of achieving the kind of results that supporters of human cloning research say that there is," Buffa said. "Adult stem cell, for example, has advanced so far that patients around the world are already able to benefit from cures and therapies.

"

But Chawla said he moved to the U.S. to complete his neurology training and medical residency because he believes that this country offers the best medical research and treatments.

"It just seems like this one perspective is holding back research for the whole world," Chawla said. "The world is looking at us for better research. We have lagged behind in the stem cell race because we are bogged down by politicians and fanatics.

"

Chawla and Ambler, who also supports stem cell research, insist that the film presents and an evenhanded look at the controversy.

"The audience can go to see the movie and pick your own ending," Ambler said. "I just want them to make the story their own. It's much more engaging than if you just sit there and tell them what to think.

Mochalicious
Current mood: cheerful

Hello everyone, how's everything going? I have great news we finally adopted a new dog from a chocolate Labrador rescue. She's a two-year-old chocolate lab mix it looks like she has some pit bull in her. Her name is Mocha (Mo for short). She is a beautiful brown coat and gorgeous and brown eyes. We all love or hear my family and I. And do yourself a favor to see Ironman also movie. I saw it twice. I'm going to check out Indiana Jones 4 probably Thursday. It looks great. I'm looking forward to The Dark Knight it looks like an excellent film. Ledgers Joker is genius, frightening and totally punk. I'm hoping the Incredible Hulk turns out well. I like bits and pieces of the first film. But the casting of Edward Norton, Tim Roth and William Hurt were all great decisions. They should have some credibility to the film. I'm also excited for Hell-Boy II. See you all later. Adam

Boycotting the Olympic Games in Beijing China.
Category: Life

Hello everyone.  I’m boycotting this year’s Olympics in Beijing China because of the human rights violations against Tibet and China.  China had a complete block on news the protests over Tibet.  I suggest a worldwide boycott of the games this summer.  I feel America as a country should pull out of the games this year.  China wants its citizens to believe there are great country but keep out the truth about America to that and other countries.  Killing innocent protesters in Tibetan monks is totally inhuman.
