8/8/08 Show/summer update
Current mood: animated
Category: Life

Hey Friends!

Apologies for total lack of bloggness the last few months.

Aural Resuscitation Unit has been playing shows, recording, and planning a big tour in October(with alex, as Boar) so the Warehouse shows and all the other summer fun will remain as great memories for those who showed up.

 TOMORROW NIGHT, FRIDAY, 8/8/08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KILLER HOUSE PARTY @ THE BASSment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

6 bands, music STARTS @ 9 PM, for reals.

9pm ARU

930 Waterbear!

10 Kyle Miller/Matthew Crowe featuring bbJR and other guests!

1045 Ghost & Flower

1130 Cell Phone

1215 Boar

1245 Dub Pilot

The BASSment is all ages. Underage drinking is not tolerated and will get you banned from future shows. Thats the only rule, friends.

The "Suggested Donation" of $8.88 is not to be taken literally. If you can only throw a few dollars in the hat for the bands, thats totally fine. If you are broke but enjoy challenging new music, come out anyway. We love you.

Check the calendar, there are several upcoming shows at the BASSment you should try and make it out for.

ARU has a free split album with Botched Facelift out now on Pet Goat records!

Go get some!

Ratskin Records just released a massive 213 band compilation of 13 second tracks! Locals Aloysius Rexford, Boar, Aseethe, Kyle Miller/Matthew Crowe, and Aural Resuscitation Unit all made it on there! fucking stoked. go order one.

Dark Winter Moon Recordings will be releasing a full length album called

"Boar versus Aural Resuscitation Unit" very soon. It will feature all live recordings from alex and I making noise in Chicago, East Moline, the Warehouse and the BASSment. noise lovers delight.

finally, NOISE RELIEF compilation is in the works. Details on that once all bands are confirmed.

back to work

April 4th show
Category: Friends

Quality over quantity for sure. Many new faces to the BASSment, some of them  heavy players in Dubuque. Luckily the bands were also in top form and everybody had a blast. Videos are up from every band over on the d.e.m.+o.n.s. page. So, just go watch the videos...big thanks to IDpyramID and ALGERNON for coming in from out of town for the show.

I hear there is a free 5 song remix ep of ALGERNON music available on a link from thier Myspace page. Free things are cool. The remixes they have posted are awesome, go grab the ep!

One Big Nut/Weather is Happening/NITCo Records
Category: Life

Hey, there is no way to express how stoked we are to get to play with such amazing bands in our own little basement. It’s so right that it’s got to be wrong somehow. Each show has been higher energy than the last, and this was no exception.Videos will be posted soon or already are posted over on the dem+ons page of the sets. So you had to be there, or you will have to go watch the videos because words don’t work.

The point of this particular blog isn’t to just gladhand ourselves though. The most exciting thing about the last show was making the East Moline/Nail In The Coffin Records connection. There is a scene down there that is  inspiring, vibrant, and, most importantly, totally fucking strange. People are making beautiful experimental new music down there, lots of people, lots of bands.

Weather is Happening and One Big Nut both have releases out or coming out on this productive and top notch label. The guy who runs the label is in a bunch of kill bands and came up for the show. His 8 year old daughter is making cool music and already has a bunch of releases! So without rambling, the coolest thing about the last show is that we have established a connection with the East Moline experimental music scene. More shows and collaborations are already in the works so stay tuned.

A.R.U. First Shot EP reviewed (they liked it!)
Current mood: thankful
Category: Music

here is that review I said I wanted to do. Wasn't sure if you wanted me to post it in the comments or what just let me know or do what you want with it. I'm not a professional reviewer but that disc is breath taking. Talk to you soon. Can't wait to do that show with you guys in march.

Aural Resuscitation Unit First Shot EP

Before I even listened to the first beat this piece of art grabbed my attention with its outstanding art work and packaging. This is a 3 inch cd. Which to me is very cool. You don't see a whole lot of 3inch cds so that was pretty cool to me. It is a limited release. 27 copies in all to my knowledge. I was lucky enough to get my hands on number 13. The actual art of the cd is very cool. It looks like some type of bright orange acid was just spilt on the cd. Very trippy.

The disc starts out with a track that to me is what a tribal marching band would sound like. Lots of hand drums and percussion with some very trippy high pitched whale like sounds to end out the track. Next is a a much slower paced jam. Some more unique percusion work along with what sounds like a cello or a stand up bass. These two elements just mix togehter seamlessly. Track three has a very hypnotic vibe. This time the excellent percusion work is partnered with what sounds like a moog synthesizer or some type of organ. There are some really intense atmospheric sounds floating in and out of the backround on this one. From there we head into the dreamy mood of track four. By this point of the disc I am completely sucked into the ARU world. Track four does a great job of coupling a dreamy sound scape with some well placed exotic noises. For track five the dreamy mood continues but it is taken in more of a outerspace type direction. As for track six I have to say this is the one that scares me. There is a lot of stuff going on in this track. Im not even going to try and put it into words. I will just say WOW. This is what experimental music is all about. Track seven has a really cool groove to it. I think track eight has to be my favorite. This one has me wiggling and dancing in my chair as I sit here at work typing this up. The people I work with are looking at me like I am crazy and all I can think is: They just need to listen to this and maybe it would wake them up from their normal rut of a life.

What an amazing disc this is. It has been in constant rotation here at OBN headquarters. This is the type of cd that makes a listener just want to create some music of thier own. It is very tribal and full of energy. A listener can practically hear the emotion and soul the creators put into making it. The Unit has created something very special here and I just feel very lucky to have a copy of this top notch piece of art. I can't wait to hear what comes out next from Aural Resuscitation Unit.

2.16.08 The Show Went On...
Current mood: cultured
Category: Friends

We didn't let the furious snow storm stop our plans. Hans tripped everyone out with a set on his one of a kind home made laser harp. Boar devastated us in under 15 minutes, like the best noise sets do. Action Phantom duo were like a multi layered onion in sound performance.Hair was set ablaze, magnetic tape was molested, lots of excellent framming.

Bearries live experimental trance music was effective and hypnotic.

They and Kel's Backyard and friends came in from Chicago so we love them extra special and drank lots of coffee together.

Aloysious Rexford busted a bunch of fresh tracks, getting breakcore/garage on our ass and also jammin out some choice jazz sampled IDM.

Kel's Backyard headlined and fuck if he didn't throw down a solid hour of totally improvised, incredibly hypnotic and original sounds. We were amazed and baffled at how he does it.

By 2 am Aural Resuscitation Unit played a set with members of Rexford, Kel's,Bearries, and the usual suspects getting into the danger zone of group mind rhythm trance.

An unforgettable evening for sure.
