You Might Be a PTA Mom If...

I have a new thread here at eHarlequin this month at..http://community.eharlequin.com/forums/simply-series/holly-jacobs-presents-you-might-be-pta-mom-if

PTA Moms are the backbone of any school. We run the Thanksgiving Pageants, the Christmas Fairs and Valentine's Dances (like the three heroines on my new American Dads trilogy). We're room mothers, we chop lettuce, sell ice cream and go on field trips.

Come over and tell me about your best (worst) school mom experience! We'll decide on a Top Ten, and the winner will win a t-shirt!

Dreams are Delicate Things

beach803.jpg

I’ve always been a firm believer in dreams. I believe the ones we have at night are important, so I keep a dream diary on my nightstand and frequently jot them down. I also believe in the dreams we all have for our lives...the tiny, delicate ones that whisper in the back of our minds even when we’re awake. Those dreams are timid creatures. A harsh word or action can kill them before they even have a chance to grown into a reality. Mine has come through so thoroughly, sometimes it still surprises me.

I’ve been a reader all my life. I can’t remember a time I didn’t have a book in hand. And I’m not talking about just reading books...I’ve been known to read cereal boxes. Words. They’ve always fascinated. Stories, they’ve always enthralled me. I have no idea at what age my dream took root. I just know it was there, lurking in the shadows. I want to write a book myself someday, it whispered. But I was busy with kids and family and didn’t pay much attention to it. But as the kids got older I knew I’d have to find a job sometime and I asked myself what I wanted to do. That dream came back out and whispered, a lot louder this time, I want to write a book myself someday.

I could see the dream now...it was looking a lot more solid. But still, it was just whispering. I took to furtively scribbling little bits of this and that in secret. But in 1996, I finally said the words out loud to my husband...I want to write a book. If he’d mocked me or scoffed, I’m not sure what I’d have done. I like to think my dream was big enough to have survived it, but I’m not sure. Dreams are delicate things. But my dh was (is) a most amazing man who simply nodded and said, "Okay, so go do it." And I did. I didn’t tell a lot of people at first, but gradually word got out.

Richard Bach said, "You are never given a wish without being give the power to make it come true. You might have to work for it, however." And boy did I work. But here I am...2008. My first SuperRomance is on the shelves. And as I look back, I realize it was good that my dream was shy and hung out in the shadow for a while. Being a mother before I was a writer has proven to be a great learning ground. This book, SAME TIME NEXT SUMMER, is about that mother’s love. Carolyn’s daughter is in an accident and fighting for her life in the hospital. Although I’ve never lived that moment, I can imagine the horror and the need to stay with a child, to lend them my strength. And my dh’s unwavering belief in my dream also inspired the book’s hero, Stephan reactions. The family’s sent him, an old, summertime friend, to make Carolyn face the truth that her daughter might not come back to her. But as Carolyn explains to him that Emma needs her, that she can’t leave her daughter, he simply pulls up a chair and waits with her with an unwavering belief and support.

Dreams are delicate things. They need that kind of support. I found it in my husband. Carolyn found it in a friend, Stephan, who throughout the course of the book becomes so much more. And you? If you have any of those dreams, lurking in the background, I hope you pull them out and share them with someone you can trust to support that dream...to support you!!  And don't forget the hardwork part of the dream.  It seems appropriate to talk about it this Labor Day weekend!

 Happy Labor Day, everyone!

End of Summer...and a song!

sunsetlovers.jpg

For me, each story has a "thing." With this month’s SuperRomance release, SAME TIME NEXT SUMMER, the thing was a song. I found Keri Noble’s CD, Fearless, partway through writing the book. There’s a song on it, Piece of My Heart, that so fit this book that it took my breath way first time I heard it.

It talks about the end of summer...saying goodbye to the people and the times. That even though summer’s over, that special summer person will keep a piece of her heart.

The idea of saying goodbye to summer seems especially poignant today. Oh, I know it’s not even Labor Day, the unofficial end of summer, but we moved my son into his first apartment across the state this weekend. (And let’s not even talk about my seven hour drive on the hump seat in the truck...dead center. Oiy.) And my daughter’s starting school today. Yes, Labor Day might be this coming weekend, and the official end of summer a few weeks beyond that, but for me, summer’s over. Autumn’s here. A time to get back to a quiet daytime house. A time when I can write, undisturbed until three, when everyone starts coming home from work and school.

So, as you say goodbye to summer, what is the thing that will stand out for you? For us, it was a time of change. One daughter brought her new boyfriend home for his first visit...and we really adore him, and my son moved out. Not just to a dorm, but to an apartment. His own place. Change. That’s my summer. You??

Piece of My Heart is a great song...and if you’ve read, or will be reading SAME TIME NEXT SUMMER, you should check it out. You can find a piece of the song at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000TETB52/ref=dm_mu_dp_trk3?ie=UTF8&qid=1219665836&sr=1-1 and you can buy the song or the album at iTunes or pretty much anywhere.

Same Time Next Summer...various formats available

Did you know that Harlequin's SuperRomance line (and that means my August release, SAME TIME NEXT SUMMER) is available in various formats?  You can find it at www.eHarlequin.com (and at other online bookstores) as a normal paperback, but also as a LARGER PRINT paperback, and as an eBook, in numerous eBook version, including Amazon's Kindle.

I hope you'll check out the book.  And I'd love to hear from readers who've bought it in an alternate format.  (Okay, I love hearing from readers who bought it in its regular paperback format as well!  LOL)

Thoughts on Summer’s End

autumn.jpg

The tree across the street has started to change.  It's always the first one in the neighborhood to go over.  And for me, it marks the fact that fall is almost here.  Our garden is still producing, but things are dying off.  The Zuc's have started to ebb, the cukes are done.  The pumpkins are in varying degrees of green to orange...  And the corn...the corn is beautiful.  We had it again last night with BLT's (the T's from the garden) and fresh cherries and blueberries.  Yes, summer is winding down!

My book that's out now is Same Time Next Summer...the title sums up my feelings as the season winds down...next year we'll do it all again. Now, I'm gearing up for fall.  Although it's not an official calendar start, the fact that the kids start school in a week is more of a marker than the date on the calendar.  And though I do see the parents who cry and feel the lack when their kids go back to school, I'm the other kind.  The kind who does her Snoopy Dance of Joy as she comes back to the quiet house.  LOL  I adore my family, but love the quiet time before they all come home!

More garden pics to come down below.  We've talked about gardens (okay, I've talked and you all have been kind enough to respond! ) all summer.  I'd love to see pics of yours!  Or trees in your neighborhood...
