enjoin

why is that the most confusing word ever?

American Heritage Dictionary
en·join (en-join')
tr.v. en·joined, en·join·ing, en·joins

1. To direct or impose with authority and emphasis.
2. To prohibit or forbid.

so, in short, if someone says "i enjoin you to kill that man!" he or she could mean either "i order you to kill that man!" or "i forbid you to kill that man!"

whose awful idea was this?

giving a word opposite definitions should be illegal.

the end.

Casimir Pulaski Day

Goldenrod and the 4H stone,
The things I brought you,
when I found out you had cancer of the bone
Your father cried on the telephone,
And he drove his car into the navy yard,
Just to prove that he was sorry

In the morning, through the window shade,
when the light pressed up
against your shoulderblade,
I could see what you were reading.
All the glory that the Lord has made,
And the complications you could do without,
When I kissed you on the mouth.

Tuesday night at the Bible study,
We lift our hands and pray over your body,
But nothing ever happens.
I remember at Michael's house,
In the living room, when you kissed my neck
And I almost touched your blouse.

In the morning at the top of the stairs,
When your father found out what we did that night
And you told me you were scared.
All the glory when you ran outside,
With your shirt tucked in and your shoes untied
And you told me not to follow you.

Sunday night when I clean the house
I find the card where you wrote it out
with the pictures of you mother.
On the floor, at the great divide
With my shirt tucked in and my shoes untied
I am crying in the bathroom.

In the morning when you finally go
And the nurse runs in with her head hung low
And the cardinal hits the window.
In the morning, in the winter shade,
On the 1st of March, on the holiday,
I thought I saw you breathing.

All the glory that the Lord has made,
And the complications when I see His face,
In the morning in the window.
All the glory when He took our place,
But He took my shoulders, and He shook my face,
and He takes and He takes and He takes

selective memory
Current mood: pensive

It seems that when it comes to relationships, if things go differently than we'd like them to, we change our recollection of the events in one of the following two ways:

A. To convince ourselves that we haven't wasted time with someone or something that wasn't worth it to begin with, we block out the bad things, try to downplay the severity of what's happened, or cast blame onto someone or something else. This is the more forgiving method.

OR

B. We tell ourselves that the apples were rotten anyway. Said person was nothing special. This is generally to save face when we feel rejected by someone.

Each of these phrases fall into one of the aforementioned categories:

"She was pretending to be something she's not." (The "I got duped" approach.)
"What did I ever see in her?"
"She kissed me first."
Or even, in some cases, "He initiated it, it was more his fault than hers." (Although, be reasonable, it takes two to tango.)

My personal favorite, and least logical, must be the theory regarding me "wanting to be surrounded by good-looking boys to make the boys she really cares about jealous." (Which has been said to my face, but more often behind my back.) Am I not attracted to these "good looking" guys then? Why am I not just hanging out with the boy I "really care about"? DOES THIS MAKE SENSE TO ANYONE?

Lord Byron, Errol Flynn, Giacomo Casanova...
Current mood: curious

July 17 2006

Where are the consummate seducers of today? Errol Flynn met his second wife while she sold snacks at a courthouse during his statutory rape trial. How? In like Flynn, that's how. Byron had his underlook. I don't even need to get into Casanova. No one is famous for womanizing anymore. These men may have been terrible, even sadistic, but they were so dashing and endlessly fascinating it doesn't matter. The effort, the slickness, the charm, attention to detail... it's gone. With whom can I file this complaint?
