Literary Characters: Trick or Treat Edition

With everyone and their uncle dressing up as Tina Fey imitating Sarah Palin for Halloween, today over at my Publishers Weekly blog, I talk about hosting a costume party where everyone comes dressed as their favorite literary characters.
Go over and see who I hooked up together for stimulating conversations. (There's even pictures)

Yesterday on my Publishers Weekly blog, Beyond Her Book, I wrote about cats and how they seem to be in every other blog I read. People write about them, post pictures about them, worship them. I don't get it, so I wrote my thoughts and there was quite a discussion going on about who rules.
In honor of all pet owners/lovers/obsessers, I will be having a very fun contest on Saturday at PW. Just send in your favorite pet picture and readers will have to match the animal with their owner, so send a pic of yourself also. There will be prizes. So check it out here.
You can email your pictures to me at barbaravey@gmail.com and stop by Saturday to guess who belongs to who (or is it whom belongs to whom?). Anyway, it promises to be very interesting.
I finally got rid of satellite television because it was really getting pricy and I didn't think I watched it enough. Of course, then I went into withdrawal.
I trolled the network sites, but pickings were slim and some offered only clips(which are just really long commercials to me).
Then someone suggested Hulu.com. This one stop shop offers shows from dozens of networks (some I never even heard of). I found myself sucked into Burn Notice (love it), getting caught up with Eureka (missed those quirky folks) and was thrilled to see Bones. Now I'm seeing shows I probably would have missed before like Fringe. They even have a ton of oldies listed.
I also found out I could keep up with The Daily Show and Colbert Report, so I wouldn't miss my daily news fix. And the good news is that I can access them 24/7 with my trusty laptop.
Nothing will replace books as my number one favorite thing to do, but, boy, is it nice to have a place to go to when my eyes start watering from the tiny print.
Now if Hulu only could add The Amazing Race.

Sunday I will be trudging along Lake Michigan's shore to raise money for PKD (Polycystic Kidney disease) for my 16 year old nephew, Nick and his dad, Mike. PKD is a hereditary disease for which there is no treatment or cure...yet.
As always, your prayers and kind thoughts for a sunny, warm day for the event are welcome (remember, I did say I'd be trudging next to the always frigid Lake Michigan)
I finally gave in yesterday and went to the theater to see a movie (actually, I saw 3, but this is about Tropic Thunder). It came highly recommended and I admit that I'm a fan of Robert Downey Jr., Ben Stiller and Jack Black.
Maybe my expectations were too high. It was ok and I would have been fine watching the dvd, but here's the problem. I saw the promo on the MTV awards and it was much funnier than the movie.
Well, I survived Gustav. I left Friday for New Orleans to attend Heather Graham's Writers for New Orleans Retreat which is a nonprofit event to support New Orleans.
After a lovely Welcome party by Kathy Love and Erin McCarthy, it was on to a Victorian Soiree given by Helen Rosburg.
But the breakfast gathering brought the bad news that the hotel was closing and we were being evacuated due to Hurricane Gustav.
I found the best article online and I'm sharing it today with all of you at my Publishers Weekly blog, Beyond Her Book. Follow the adventures of a poor, unsuspecting man as he's stalked to be a cover model.
It is guaranteed to put a smile on your face no matter how sucky your day is going.
