What were YOU doing in 6th Grade???
Current mood: content
Death Angel were opening for Metallica at Kabuki here in San Francisco when they were in 6th grade. Amazing but true. And they haven't lost an ounce of what made them great. In fact, they're even better now.
Last night's show at Slims (with Forbidden) KILLED. I mean it FUCKING KILLED. Got it? This was the original show. Thursday night's show was added as a second show and D.A. knew that those of us who bought tix for Friday's show were the fanatical fans, so they played an extra long set.
Mark & Company played over two hours, both new and old material, leaving nothing out of their performance.
Forbidden opened and they were really good. I will not say great, because I realized that I'm not as found of their *newer* material as the first two Forbidden albums. They are one of the bands responsible for the chugga-chugga, break beats I detest so much. But, when they played their better material, they were good.
Once Forbidden were finished, a few folks left. Mostly muscle-headed Pantera losers or old folks who can't take a whole night of metal anymore, so nothing lost and lots of breathing space gained.
When Death Angel hit the stage, it was like "Forbidden who??" It was their night, and I loved every minute of it.
Great seeing everyone....Layla, you kick ass. :)
I was so hyped, I stayed up until 4am, smiling the whole time.
Death Angel rules.....

Thrash - Bay Area style
Exodus, Goatwhore, Warbringer - Slim's, San Francisco, February 24, 2008
There are plenty of great thrash bands all over the world, but nobody does it as good as us in the SF Bay Area. It's true. And Exodus showed why they rule.
Bad mouth their new music if you want, I like it, so we won't be in agreement. And I LOVED seeing them last night!!!
I got to Slim's early and interviewed Gary Holt. First, my thanks go out to their tour manager Ross, who was so kind and organized. Gary was great; intelligent, honest and funny as usual.
Slim's was packed, as it should have been. I must say that the first time I saw Warbringer, opening for Enslaved, if I remember correctly were not impressive. This time they were tight, entertaining and quite enjoyable.
I think I've Goatwhore about 20 times and this was the best they have ever played. Sometimes when I have seen them in the past, they didn't have a *spark*, but this all changed last night. They were blasting through the whole set. Robert M even mentioned (quite accurately) that the bass now has a bit of a Celtic Frost influence. And now they wear a lot more spikes, so things are looking great for this southern band.
By the time Exodus hit the stage, there was no breathing room. I stood in my usual spot, front, house right, where at least I had a bit of room and watched the band play a good mix of new and old material, ending with Toxic Waltz. The floor was pretty much one giant pit for most of their set. I saw crazy Meral body surfing a couple of times.
There were also plenty of us old-timers there. We will never forget the masters and the roots of the music we love.
Next up: Death Angel and Forbidden this Friday.
I'll also be posting my playlist from Rampage this weekend shortly and for those of you in SF, I'm DJing the Queenryche show at the Fillmore tomorrow night.

Rotting Christ, Immolation, Belphegor, Averse Serfina, Arise - Sweets, Oakland 2-21-08
Current mood: relaxed
First, I want say at the very start I had soooo much fun at this show.
Even though the crowd was not as large as it could have been, it was a QUALITY crowd. There were few posers and just a couple emo kids. I guess the posers went to Chimaira at Slim's last night. HAHAHAHA!!!!
Anyway, I met up with Tommy in The City and we headed to Oaktown. Arise was playing. They were pretty good. I had too much catching up with folks to listen to much of their set.
Averse Serfina played quite well. I must say live they sound better than their recordings. It's decent black metal and the crowd filtering in during their set enjoyed it at well.
Next up were Austrian giants Belphegor. I love this band. Simply put, they rocked.
My guys in Immolation were next. Is there a nicer group of folks than Immolation? I mean really, the appreciation Ross & company has towards their fans is unmatched. Sure, it's easy to be an asshole; it's hard work to be grateful and kind to crowd after crowd while on tour. I think their set was the best of the night. All three top bands were awesome, make no mistake, but the crowd's energy level was at its peak during this band's blasting death metal. And right now, I would have to say that Bob is one of the best death metal guitarist around, probably second only to Trey.
And straight from Greece, that wonderfully sexy band Rotting Christ brought it home. Their music combines black metal, traditional metal and lots of signature melodies no one else can match.
Of course it was awesome to see all my friends.....Immolation, Rotting Christ, Tommy, Christine, Meral, Mongo, Tonus, Stone, Amy, Michelle, Moises, John, Kurt and everyone else....All of you are TROOOO and KVLT. Consider yourselves part of the elite. Now, go torment your poser friends who went to Chimaira.

2007 BAST magazine honors
I will not use the term *Award* in metal. Awards are for surface-level, commercialized, top-40 crap, not our music. So, here are my Top Ten CDs of the year, and the very, very Worst CD on 2007. I only picked one in the worst category, it was too mind-numbingly wretched to think of others. Fortunately, this was a year of huge comebacks. Lots of bands came back in full force. Bravo to all the great ones!
Top Ten of 2007
1 – Limbonic Art – Legacy of Evil
2 – Candlemass – King of the Grey Islands
3 – Moonspell – Under Satanae
4 – Tulus – Biography Obscene
5 – Rotting Christ – Theogonia
6 – Electric Wizard – Witchcult Today
7 – Virgin Black – Requiem
8 – Sumeria – All Paths Lead to Insanity
9 – Turisas – The Varangian Way
10 - Immolation – Shadows in the Light
And now (drumroll please...) the worst piece of crap from 2007 goes to:
Lordi - The Arokalypse
As a matter of fact, I included my review from Issue 4 below. Gack! Just thinking of this mess makes me want to take a shower (and I just took one!).
LORDI – The Arockalypse (CD/07)
For the first 5 minutes of this CD, there wasn't any music. Instead, a simulated newscast talking about an alien invasion or something similar went on and on and on. I grew impatient, wishing for the band to play something. And then, as soon as they did, I wished to go back to the fake newscast. If I was 12 years old, I'd be impressed by Lordi. Their costumes, make-up and schlocky appearance would make any kid happy. But, I'm not. The music is a combination of Poison, KISS, Kansas, Journey, Kix and any other horrific arena band of the 70s and 80s. There is nothing original about this recording. Every riff, melody and terrible vocal has been done to death. It isn't metal; indeed, it's rock at its worst. There's even a gut-wrenching ballad. And the vocals, ug!! I can't believe what I'm about to say, but here goes… at one point the vocalist tries his hand at screaming like Sebastian Bach, but (and this is the unbelievable part), he comes nowhere close to Bach's vocal ability. Now please, don't ever give me music that will force me to compliment a glam rocker, please, don't. I predict that this CD is so bad; these guys are going to be big, really big. (The End) – MH
All of the Bast staffs' Top 10 will be in the next issue. Preorder your copy today at:
