1:37 PM - Top Music Venues in Baton Rouge
From the Baton Rouge Advocate (on June 16) http://www.2theadvocate.com/specialsections/wherewelive/19974469.html
(Venues in italics feature blues music anywhere from occasionally to regularly)

A growing downtown nightlife scene is the biggest news in Baton Rouge musical entertainment. The combination of the Shaw Center for the Arts, which includes the busy Manship Theatre, and bars and restaurants within easy walking distance of the 3-year-old arts center plus free musical events such as Live After Five! draw thousands of people to a downtown that was deserted after 5 p.m. for decades.
Although downtown isn't the only place to find nightlife in Baton Rouge, it's a good place to start.
The Varsity Theatre The Varsity Theatre, located just outside of the LSU campus at 3353 Highland Road, is among the city's largest music clubs. The Varsity's events calendar has included national touring acts Candlebox, the Dave Matthews Tribute Band and Pat Green.
Boudreaux and Thibodeaux Boudreaux and Thibodeaux, 214 Third St., is living up to its southwest Louisiana-inspired name. Recent weekend acts included the Lafayette-based Cajun-rock band the Bluerunners and zydeco star Rosie Ledet.
Spanish Moon The Spanish Moon, located between the LSU campus and downtown at 1109 Highland Road, is among Baton Rouge's busiest and most adventurous music venues. The many noted acts that have played there include garage-rock legends the Fleshtones and Brighton, England's British Sea Power.
The M Bar The M Bar, at 350 Third St., recently entered the weekend music market with blues, jazz and rhythm-and-blues bands.
Hollywood Casino Just beyond downtown, Hollywood Casino presents music Fridays and Saturdays.
The acts include swamp-pop favorites such as Van Broussard, Don Rich and Cypress featuring Warren Storm and Willie Tee.
North Gate Tavern A short stroll from the Varsity, the North Gate Tavern, a comparatively raw college bar and music club at 136 Chimes St., features lesser-known touring rock bands.
Phil Brady's Phil Brady's, in Baton Rouge's midcity area at 4848 Government St., has long been known for its Thursday night blues jam.
Chelsea's Café Like the Spanish Moon, Chelsea's Café, at 2857 Perkins Road, presents music beyond the mainstream. The busy, eclectic Chelsea's schedule covers everything from New Orleans brass bands to veteran touring rock acts.
Teddy's Juke Joint Teddy's Juke Joint, 17001 Old Scenic Highway, Zachary, offers authentic blues at an authentic juke joint.
The Texas Club The Texas Club, 456 N. Donmoor Ave., is a veteran establishment on the local music scene. Like the Varsity Theatre, it's a large venue that can present national touring acts.

5:54 PM - Kenny Neal On Cover of Blues Review Magazine
Kenny Neal is on the front cover of Blues Review Magazine. Article inside also includes his brother Ray Neal. To all of us back home, we call him Lil' Ray. Check out the April/May Issue.

Our April/May 2008 issue features a cover story on the great Louisiana-weaned swamp blues artist Kenny Neal. We also interview harp player Billy Boy Arnold, multi-instrumentalist Bob Brozman, edgy new bluesman Billy Jones, and guitarist Sean Costello, who, sadly, passed away after we'd gone to press. And we pay tribute to the late Jeff Healey, whose passion for blues and jazz reached far beyond the pop stardom mainstream audiences knew him for. Plus we bring you all the news, commentary, and CD reviews you've come to expect from the world's leading blues publication. It's available now!

12:42 PM - Kudos for the ’08 Blues Festival Guide
Category: Friends
We here in Baton Rouge received our first shipment of the 2008 Blues Festival Guide in time for our Blues Festival this past weekend. We were pleasantly surprised to see several of our local friends among those who have articles published in this years edition...
Chubby Carrier (Lafayette musician) - What's Cookin' (Page 64) Chris Thomas King (BR musician) - Can Blues Catch a Ride? (Page 80) Sandor Gulyas (BRBS VP/LSU student) - Pride of Farish Street. (Page 98) Buddy Guy (originally from Louisiana) Cover Photo Sean Carney (Teddy's Mud-In performer) - Mojo Travelogue (Page 72)
Also, did you know that Bobby Rush was originally born near Houma, Louisiana (back in 1933)? There's an interview with Bobby in this year's Blues Festival Guide and he mention's that (starts at page 68)
So congratuations to all those tied in to our music scene who are receiving this noteriety.
The Baton Rouge Blues Society
