Obama Stirs Up S.F. Crowd

The The Sacramento Bee has a great article about Obama's visit to San Francisco yesterday.

Peter Hecht reports, "Before more than 5,000 people in a raucous, late-night rally, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama issued a passionate call Wednesday to end the war in Iraq, stop the U.S. practice of torture and advance racial equality and gay rights in America."

Boo!

The Obama pumpkin won second place at the pumpkin carving contest. Ok, there were only 14 pumpkins in the contest, and it was just amongst some friends at a party. However, the pumpkin did look kind of cool once lit up by a candle, and the back side carving was of the campaign logo.

The wining pumpkin was actually nine pumpkins assembled and carved to represent the solar system. We only need Obama to be President of America, so I wasn't too worried about being edged out by the solar system.

SMC Dem Straw Poll Booth for Obama

April V. just sent in this write-up about the Obama booth at the recent San Mateo County Democratic Straw Poll event.

From the first time I heard about the Obama Bay to Breakers Float and saw a photo of it on the BayAreaForObama.com website, I knew there had to be another venue where it could be displayed in all of its Baracking glory!! That time arrived at the recent San Mateo County Democratic Presidential Straw Poll. With help from Lance U., Spencer P. and Steve A., I drove to Vacaville and rescued the top part of the float from a storage yard, reincarnating it into a stationary display piece next to the excellent Obama booth at the Straw Poll.

Straw Poll Booth for Obama

It was greatly admired by all who saw it, and I am happy to report that it has found a good home in Pete G.'s (CD 14) Palo Alto garage, awaiting its next showing at the Salinas Straw Poll in December.

Thanks to all of the inspired artisans who created this work of Obamart for all to gaze upon and enjoy. It empowers us and acts as a reminder that true political change is within our grasp.

Women for Obama Event in SF

Pamela wrote a great Daily Kos blog entry about her thoughts on Friday's Women for Obama event in San Francisco.

I've been thinking a lot the past week about Obama's famous speech to the 2004 Democratic Convention -- particularly his poetic riff exploding the red state/blue state dichotomy...  Friday, in San Francisco, I was privileged to hear Barack Obama... (give) the finest speech I have heard him give yet...  The red state/blue state divide is a false distinction, but a distinction that prevents us from acting to address our deep social problems.  He alluded to the large crowds his campaign draws as evidence that this is not true.  Then he gave the money quote of the whole speech: "When it comes to what is wrong with America, the American people are not the problem.  They are the answer."  We have the power to resist not just what divides us from each other, but what prevents us from understanding our common destiny.

video on cbs5.com

As President, Obama is going to "tell people what they need to hear, not what they want to hear...  You need the truth."  And he believes that we can handle it.

Local Obama Supporter Camille Featured in National Article
Category: News and Politics

The Friday issue of the New York Times contains a great story about Obama's success in on-line fundraising. It notes "...Obama has garnered the most attention for using the Internet as both an organizing and a fund-raising tool. His page on MySpace.com, a popular social-networking site, has more than 136,000 friends, dwarfing any other candidate's...".

New York Times, July 13, 2007

The article highlights the fundraising efforts of our local Bay Area resident Camille, who is quoted referring to Obama saying, "I was so inspired by this guy". And we're inspired by Camille!

Obama's "Walk For Change" Steps Up
Category: News and Politics

We just received this great write-up from Mark Brickman:

Obama's "Walk For Change" Steps Up

Saturday, June 9th was a momentous day for a local grass roots group. Obama San Mateo, which formed to bolster Barack Obama's candidacy for president and ensure his rise to the top of the ticket in California, got together to knock on doors in many neighborhoods in San Mateo County. OSM joined with over 10,000 volunteers in fifty states to canvass their neighbors and bring the campaign to local people who may not be familiar with Obama's message.

San Mateo "Walk for
Change" Orientation

Over a dozen members of Obama San Mateo gathered at Martin Luther King Center Park in San Mateo for a quick orientation and then scattered in all directions in groups of one, two or three to cover territories from Daly City in the north to Menlo Park in the south. When the group reassembled in the warm afternoon sun to report their progress, the tally showed 533 doors knocked on, 158 people contacted and engaged, dozens of potential Obama voters, 27 strong supporters, and at least two volunteers who agreed to add their voice to the enthusiastic members of OSM.

What began as a group of two founders has now grown to thirty people plus who are actively volunteering their precious time to make a difference in the next presidential election. The group is truly a diverse cross-section of our county demographic — ranging in age from early 20s to early 70s, men and women, some with affiliations to prior political campaigns and some with next to no political experience, and all with a desire to see a change in direction for this country away from the status quo.

Obama San Mateo has accomplished a lot in a short time. Its website, www.obamasanmateo.com, charts the progress of the group, and proactivity and action has been the name of the game for OSM. Numerous tabling events around the county have registered dozens of voters at farmers markets, storefronts and the like. Most voters do not realize that even moving next door requires one to re-register, and as this past Saturday revealed, many disgruntled previous Republican voters no longer wishing to vote Republican are desiring to re-register as Democrats to have their votes count.

Other websites, such as www.bayareaforobama.com and www.mybarackobama.com are excellent ways to track the activities of the Obama campaign and the events of the local group. "Obama gets the largest crowds of any candidate," says Brad Lyau, one of OSM's leaders as he briefed the group that gathered at King Park early Saturday morning. Brad's inspiring words of encouragement launched what turned out to be a fun, energizing and successful day for the group as it branched out to visit with its neighbors. Lyau continued, "Today will put us on the map. Let's go out and let people hear us!"

Thanks Mark!

Obama Reggaeton
Category: News and Politics

The new Amigos de Obama web site has a song in Spanish titled Obama Reggaeton. It's got a catchy rhythm (but with my rudimentary Spanish language skills, I can't vouch for the content!).

Check it out at:

www.amigosdeobama.com

Apparently, they are looking for volunteers. Use the web site's "Contact Us" form if you are interested.

Thanks to Fran for this information.

8 Foot Obama Float!
Category: News and Politics

Wayee just sent in this update...

Today, Obama supporters in San Francisco led an 8 foot Obama float through a crowd of over 500,000 people in the annual Bay to Breakers race. We received tremendous support from the crowd — the energy and momentum was amazing! We finished the race with flying colors, which is where Obama's campaign is headed.

If today's positive response is any indicator on how people in the Bay Area feel about our candidate, we are quite confident that Obama is going to take Northern California!

A special thanks to Spencer for his innovative idea for the float and his expert building skills!

Nice job Wayee and rest of the race team!

Obama Logo Cake
Category: News and Politics

Our friends up in Sacramento came up with a great way to raise funds... a bake sale.

Check out this cool looking delicacy:
      Obama Logo Cake

Kim, from the group Sacramento for Obama, reports:

Yesterday afternoon Sacramento for Obama had a bake sale in downtown Sacramento. The participation was incredible, there were a lot of new people working the tables, we had 17 new members sign up and raised $462! One of the most common comments I heard was, "Wow, Obama really is grassroots", and it was said in a very positive way!

That's creativity!
