The Big Payback

I just found out I've been listed with IMDB, the Earth's biggest movie database.

http://imdb.com/name/nm2123963/

It was hard work on that set -- long, late nights after the 9-5, egos, driving all over the fucking city of Chicago to find fake breasts -- and if you know anything aout Chicago, it could take as long as 1 1/2 - 2 hours to drive from its far south side to its far north side. But the payback is worth it -- I'm listed in IMDB!

Now I gotta get more credits added to my name so that little bitty "Cup of My Blood" doesn't get lonely.

Maybe I should stick with this costuming and styling thing...

2006 New York Cares Day

Are you ready to take the lead?

On Saturday October 21st, 2006, more than 8,000 volunteers will help paint a brighter future for New York City students by revitalizing more than 100 city schools during New York City's largest day of volunteer service. This event simply would not be possible without the hundreds of volunteers who step-up into leadership positions for this event. With your help, we will be able to give thousands of children clean, safe and stimulating environments in which to learn and grow. If you are ready to "take the lead" or would love to leave a lasting impression at a deserving public school by designing and sketching a mural, we'd love to hear from you!

Site Captains
With over 100 projects taking place simultaneously throughout the 5 boroughs on New York Cares Day, Site Captains are critical to the success of this event. Working with the principal and/or key staff members at your assigned school, you will help plan for the projects that will take place at your site on New York Cares Day. Other responsibilities include ordering supplies, managing volunteer teams and solving minor problems. Don't worry though, experienced New York Cares staff members will be there to guide you every step of the way.

For more information please contact Tara Cook at 212-402-1157 or Tara_Cook@nycares.org.

Team Leaders
While the vast majority of participants on New York Cares Day will be from pre-arranged teams, we always have hundreds of individuals who participate. We are looking for volunteers willing to manage a team of individual volunteers on New York Cares Day. Responsibilities will include communicating project information to the volunteers and ensuring your volunteers are happy and engaged on the day.

For more information, please contact Jennifer Vessio at 212-402-1107 or Jennifer_Vessio@nycares.org.

Calling All Artists
In order to paint a brighter future for our students, we need you! New York Cares is looking for artists to design and sketch murals for this event. Artists work with schools to develop a theme and design, then sketch it on a school wall so that volunteers can paint it on New York Cares Day. With your help, we will be able to provide vibrant and stimulating environments for thousands of children.

For more information please contact Colleen Smallfield at 212-402-1129 or Colleen_Smallfield@nycares.org.

Volunteer Greeters
More than 8,000 people will volunteer on New York Cares Day. Making everyone feel welcome and getting them checked-in is therefore a very important task. Volunteer Greeters are needed at each site on New York Cares Day to help greet and register volunteers, collect donations and ensure that registration information and donations are safely returned to New York Cares following the event. With so many new volunteers, New York Cares Day also provides a perfect opportunity to recruit volunteers for our year-round calendar programs.

For more information please contact Colleen Smallfield at 212-402-1129 or Colleen_Smallfield@nycares.org.

"Yo So Cubano" on A Dollar?

Many of us are unable to trace our roots. Thousands of us can no longer fly the flag of our country so we take up the flag of our culture. Millions of us no longer have physical ties to our ancestors. Each of us should rejoice when just one of us discovers their roots. My brother, friend, all the time inspiration and sometimes teacher has found a path to his history.

Rolando Brown, Executive Director of the Hip-Hop Association, is starting leg two of his journey this week. Not only will he use this opportunity to "grow hip-hop", but spend time while he is there to find his family. Adopted at a young age, Rolando began his quest to find his blood family last year. On his August 2005 trip, with lots of help and information from government officials, media representatives and everyday people, he was able to get closer to locating his family. Unfortunately, he did not make any direct connections with any family members, but he will be returning this month to continue his search. However, he is just a few dollars short from his target goal, which will go towards supporting the hip-hop community.

So in the spirit of Petey Wheatstraw from the South Side of Chicago, can (he) borrow a dollar? Help him raise the final $712 needed.

If you are able, please donate just $1 to his homegoing fund. (Of course, larger donation amounts are welcome as well.)

Make your donations directly to Rolando through PayPal. His PayPal address is rolando@hiphopassociation.org. Or donate through his website at www.sneakersuitman.com.

Or if you are in the New York area and would like to make a cash donation then hit me up at combat@dopewan.com so that we can set up a time for you to link up with him.

Can't do the dollar? Just send him your well wishes. He will be most appreciative.

Thank you all for sharing my love and dedication to a brother who shares his love and dedication. Let's help him get there on just ONE DOLLAR.

Peace & Prosperity,

Rock

Below is his story about why he goes:

Why I go?
HOME

Every time I go,
I share a little bit more of the Hip-Hop I love.

Every time,
the same is shared with me..
a little bit of the Hip-Hop they love.

My father came here with music & culture.
I return with the sounds and interest in sharing a fate.
My mother came here with dance and culture.
I return with the strides of a palm tree planted in NY.

Every time I go,
I share a little bit of the strength and hope from an entire community that says, you have people here too!

Every time,
the same is shared with me,
a little bit of those things that keep entire communities
making films and music.

They only jumped towards Miami.
Without chains on the roads to riches and diamond rings, what could they possibly know about Hip-Hop?

People have actually said these things.
People, who look just like me.

Thats why I go.

Why I ask for help?

Who better to share photos / knowledge/ music/ stories/ hardships/ potential/ successs/ and opportunities to give, than the people who love you enough to help you grow?
