After a titanic 10 week battle, Snooker Leisure once again lift the coverted Elms 5-a-side Premier League Championship in High Wycombe. After taking a break in the last league they returned to winning ways in a nail bitting last night where any one of three teams could have come out victorious.
After battering arch rivals and Fellow contenders Clube Corinthians 4-1 with Matt Gayler back to his best with a stunning hat-trick, the league title will once again sit proud in High Wycombe's premier snooker hall.
The Team captain (Ben Taylor) said "we were the best side throughout the league and fully deserve it. We have been plagued by injuries and other complications, but it just shows the depth we have in our squad to have come out on top"
Indeed Snooker Lesiure have had their selection problems this season and have been without top goalscorer Matt Gayler (work schedule) and Dylan Leary (Hernia) for the most part of the season. Ben said "Any team will miss players like those two, Matt is our impact player and top goalscorer and Dylan is our Stalwart steady eddie but it's a credit to players like Ryan, Matty Higley and Nick that their absence has not affected results."
This is now Snooker's 6th top 2 finish in 10 seasons, winning now on three occasions but when asked if the team can improve Ben is optimistic "I think we can. We have a young team, Ryan plays with maturity beyond his years, he's our Theo Walcott and it's scary how good he might be when he is our age. Olly and Matt Gayler will continue to terrify any defense because they are so naturally gifted and can produce moments of magic out of nowhere and with Dylan, Nick and Matty Higley we have as the best defensive unit in the league."
If there is a cause of concern for Ben it is the inability to find a permenant Goalkeeper, in fact they used 4 different keepers in this league. But they seem to have struck lucky in Dave. "Dave made some vital saves for us throughout the season and in the end he proved to be invaluable to us." Unfortunately for Snooker Leisure Dave can't continue playing next season due to him returning home but Ben thinks he may have found a replacement. He said "We have picked up a young keeper called Josh Caine who looks to be very useful so we will see how that goes, I think the whole team know how good he is having played agianst him on several occasions"
Despite Ben's rugged good looks and obviously incredible sense of humour, he somehow remains modest when asked about his own acheivements. Ben finished this season top goalscorer but the captain doesn't see that being a regular occurrence. He said "It was nice to get 15 goals and finish top goalscorer, but I'm not a natural finisher. When Matty returns I fully expect him to be our main marksman again.. . but it was nice to get the goals for the team."
When asked about the future of the team, who have decided once again to take a break Ben kept us all guessing saying "A few of the players just want a break and a few just wanna try something new. We also have Ryan who is currently sitting exams. So we thought it would be right to let everyone experience those things and see if they want to start it up again after a season break. At this moment I really do not know if this is the end for this group of players; guess we'll just have to wait and see!"
The winning team are as follows:
Ben Talyor (c)
Dylan Leary
Matt Gayler
Olly Barrow
Nick Fisher
Matt Higley
Big Dave (Fantastic GK)
Ryan Maguire
And thanks also to:
