Impromptu Review - The Lost Room
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities

This is a little out of the ordinary but since it is the middle of the month and waiting until next month would mean this review would be useless because the event would be over at that point, we offer you a review on the Sci-Fi channel original miniseries, The Lost Room, which will air in its entirety this Sunday, December 17th.

The premise behind the Lost Room is very similar to that of an RPG, in that our hero, Joe Miller (played by Six Feet Under's Peter Krause), must complete a series of quests in order to rescue the princess...in this case, his daughter, Anna (Elle Fanning).

The title character (and believe me when I say, the room truly is a character in the story) is a motel room.  Specifically, room 10 at the Sunshine Motel outside Gallup, New Mexico along a stretch of road that was once (most importantly, during the time of the backstory, May, 1961) known as Highway 666.  The thing about room 10 at the Sunshine Motel is that it never existed.  At least not in this reality.

Something happened in 1961.  Something that we as the audience are never quite brought to understand.  Fanatics, a group known as Collectors. believe that God died in the room and that bringing the Objects together will allow them to speak with Him.

That brings us to the Objects - not to be confused with things, or objects with a little o.  The Objects were items which were in the Room when the Event happened and were forever changed by the Event.  The include things such as a pair of glasses that, when worn, prevent combustion; a bus ticket that transports anyone touched by it to the road outside the motel; and, most importantly, the Object possesed by our hero, a key that can be used to turn any door anywhere into a doorway to anywhere else the user might want to go, via Room 10.

Short of laying out the plot, step by step, there is not a lot more to say about The Lost Room, other than this writer was pleasantly surprised by it.  I sat down to watch the first installment on Monday night because there really wasn't a lot to choose from on television.  By the end of that first two hours, I couldn't wait for the next segment, thankful I only had to wait until Tuesday.  Another four hours after that I found myself saying something I very rarely say: I wish I had thought of that.  There were a few loose ends, like what the Event truly was and why it ended the way it did - Sorry, folks, no spoilers here, you'll just have to watch to find out how it ends.  And of course I was a little disappointed that the ending left the story open for a sequel, sequels, especially when there is nothing left to say, being something I am mostly against.

But beyond those two minor troubles, I enjoyed Sci-Fi Channel's The Lost Room and encourage everyone with an interest in fantasy and science fiction to catch it on the rerun.

first page search results!

We're really not sure how we got there but it seems that we have been upgraded to the first page of results on Google, MSN and Ask.com.  Checking stats, we noticed that there have been more and more hits coming from search engines so we decided to do our own search.  Using simply the keywords bending spoons, as we would if we were real internet surfers, we found that we were upstaged only by several varying articles concerning our "namesake" (as it were) Uri Gellar.  But on all three search engines, bending spoons: a literary collection is one of the results that appears on the first page!  This is big news, we're certainly excited, since we didn't do anything to get ourselves there.  Ha!

Hello everyone!

Well.....it is looking like we've got some new readers and, hopefully, new writers, as well.  The 'zine has been getting quite a bit of traffic as of late, that's fantastic!  We want to take a moment to thank everyone who has been reading and keeping up with things at the 'zine.  We would love any comments or suggestions that you have for making things at bending spoons a little better.

Also, we would like to invite every one of our friends (35 to date which is pretty good for not really trying) to join the bending spoons writer's room group, if you haven't already.  Things over there are kind of slow but we would love to get it up and running as a full-fledged writer's workshop where people can share ideas, and get help with pieces they are working on.

That's all for now, please continue to check here and on the website, www.bending-spoons.com, for news and new postings.

ready for business

Well, it's only taken 19 months but bending spoons: a literary collection is ready for business.  Visit the website and check us out, then submit something because frankly it's going to make visiting rather boring if we don't start getting some submissions.
