Hello everyone.  We now have a culprit.  Idiopathic Acute Eosinophilic Pneumonia is what put him in the hospital. It's a very rare form of Pneumonia with only 100 cases reported as of 2006.  They have him on prednisone for the next 2 months.  If he screws the meds up he can end up right back in the icu.

Mathia's is now released from the hospital.  We are still awaiting test results for information as to what caused his problems.  The speed of his recovery can only be expained by the spells and prayers that were put forth his way.

Hello again everyone.

I want to first thank you all for the tremendous outpouring of prayers, spells and waves of healing.

It is now approx. 24 hours since awakening from surgeries.  There have been some incredible results.  Xrays taken this morning show some good looking lungs.  The fluid in Mathias' lungs has been drained out and they were happy enough with the results to decide that Mathias' chest tube could be removed.  His main is still installed.  Incredibly he currently does not need to take oxygen via machine. (This is what has surprised everyone the most)  It is only when he laughs or coughs that the oxygen level drops to where he needs to suck off the canister for a few. 

His heart rate has decreased by about 20-25% to more happy levels. They have him hopped up on morphine and have been pumping him full of some crazy broad range antibiotics.  If everything continues this path they say he could be out of the ICU sometime Saturday.  Pieces of his biopsy have been sent to multiple labs but there have been no test results reported back as of tonight. 

The main objective and hope is that the antibiotic regime crushes whatever is causing his lungs to fill with fluid so they do not have to go back inside the lungs.  It would also be nice to get some labwork back and find out what is causing all of this so that they can directly attack the problem.

If there is no relapse he should be at full recovery in about a month.

Good evening everyone.

It's 11:00 PM and we have just come back from the ICU of Exeter hospital where my son Mathias has been an unfortunate guest the last couple of days.  It's incredibly draining trying to keep up the bullshit facade of "everything's going to be ok-you're gonna be fine" when you're looking at the tornado of anxiousness, trepidation, bravado, frustration and fear of the unknown on the face of your own flesh and blood.  I can only begin to imagine how draining the current situation is on Mathias. 
I first want to thank those of you who have been supportive thus far.  I secondly ask those of you who do to please light a candle, or to find some room in your prayers for Mathias and project a wave of healing his way.
It was originally thought that he had pneumonia in both of his lungs.  A catscan has shown that there was a significantly larger amount of fluid in his lungs than would be with pneumonia.  He currently cannot keep his blood saturated with enough oxygen on his own and has been monitored in the ICU as a result.  Of course being of my family blood he is fighting everything that helping him.  (The first thing the nurses say to us when we ask how he was doing after surgery is that he is good enough to tenaciously fight them from keeping the oxygen mask on him.)  His body is fighting the system and keeping them from being able to draw blood so they operated on him tonight and installed some type of blood letting valve/tube (for lack of medical terminology) while they at the same time performing a biopsy on his lung and sending a camera down his throat for a closer look inside his lungs.  (they say it looked pretty good inside)
Thankfully he has come out of the surgery and at this time does not have to be put on a respirator to breathe! 
Now comes the mind eating wait.  Where as they have not been able to previously draw needed blood they took what had to have been at least a pint of blood from him for the labs.  They tell us the results of the biopsy can take as long as a week to get back.  At this point they do not have a clue as to what is causing his symptoms.  They tell us they have not come across his particular circumstances before.
I am unacustomed to being without knowledge and do not know how I am going to get through this time period.  The current goal is for his breathing capabilities to increase to the point where he can sustain the needed oxygen level without the use of any machinery.
