Big Kenny of Country Music Duo Big & Rich Named December Darfur Hero

WASHINGTON – The Save Darfur Coalition today named Grammy Award-nominee Big Kenny (Kenny Alphin) of the country music duo Big & Rich its December "Darfur Hero." The program highlights individuals who are playing a crucial role in helping end the violence in Darfur.

Big Kenny has been an outspoken advocate for the people of Darfur since early 2006 when he met former Marine Captain Brian Steidle who served as an African Union observer for their mission in Darfur. Since then he has worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the ongoing genocide in Darfur – speaking about the situation at all of his concerts and in all of his public appearances and interviews.

"No matter where I am, I take advantage of every opportunity to raise awareness of the crisis in Darfur and demand action," said Big Kenny in his blog posting on the Save Darfur website. "I would spend every nickel I could get my hands on to help these people. Darfur is the worst humanitarian crisis on our earth and it is time we did something to stop it – permanently."

In April 2006, Big & Rich spoke and performed before an estimated 50,000 people at the "Save Darfur: Rally to Stop Genocide" on the National Mall in Washington. The duo again spoke and performed in September 2007 Voices to Stop Genocide rally in New York's Central Park. Additionally, last October, Big Kenny traveled with his wife, Christiev, to Akon, Sudan. The couple delivered clothing, medical and school supplies, and musical instruments to the Kunyuk School for Girls.

"If these were our children in our neighborhoods, there is no way on earth we would tolerate such blatant abuses of humanity," he added. "One by one we'll grow into a voice that cannot be ignored."

Most recently, Big Kenny spoke at the Nashville leg of the Dream for Darfur Olympic Torch Relay. The relay, which has also traveled internationally to countries with a history of genocide and mass atrocities, aims to urge China – as Sudan's chief diplomatic sponsor, major weapons provider, and largest investor and trade partner – to use its unique position to lead the world in bringing and end to the ongoing violence and suffering in Darfur.

Big Kenny's blog posting can be viewed on Save Darfur's website here

Big & Rich’s Kenny Alphin’s Letter From The Sudan

"The past 24 hours in the village of Akon have been the most incredible of my life. We were greeted on the runway by over 500 singing children and community members and leaders. David (Physician and friend David Marks is coordinating medical supply aid with Dr Luka Deng on the ground in Sudan) met with over 75 patients today and the line will be longer tomorrow as word spreads. From the school under trees, the clinic with not more than a roof and a table, to a public meeting where they all sang and expressed there appreciation of our visit and urgent needs, this trip has already surpassed my expectations.

Some thirty of the patients seen today had malaria. Most of them had to wade across rivers to come to school. Some walk three hours each way to get here. I've never in my life seen a more impoverished situation nor have I ever met more genuinely happy and appreciative people. They have fought for over 20 years for their basic freedoms, now they have to fight for their lives, the basic necessities of food, water, education and healthcare. Their main concern is to save their children. The aid we were able to bring will no doubt save lives.

We were able to arrive with all 20 crates of aid we brought from the US in addition to picking up a couple hundred survival kits from CSI for returning refugees. The trip has no doubt encouraged us all to take responsibility to help and improve humankind. A world with out prejudice!!

Love will lead the way,
Bk and the Team Akon

Big & Rich’s Kenny Alphin Heads to Akon, Sudan for AID Relief

Alphin And Wife Christiev Bring Aid And Love To The Kunyuk School For Girls

NASHVILLE – Oct. 19, 2007 - Late yesterday morning Kenny Alphin of Big & Rich and wife Christiev left Nashville, Tenn. for Akon, Sudan to bring medical and school supplies, along with musical instruments, clothing and building tools to the Kunyuk School for Girls.

The school has held a deep place in their hearts over the last year. They originally donated money to the school at Kenny's number one party for the song "Last Dollar," which was penned by Alphin and recorded by Tim McGraw. At the time there were 250 girls enrolled at the school and their classroom consisted of a chalkboard nailed into a Baobab tree. Enrollment at the school has since increased to 1000.

"When I first learned of the school it was through Reverend and physician, Gloria White Hammond of Boston," comments Alphin. "Today there are over one thousand girls at the school as the horrific conflicts continue in the north and Darfur leaving most of these children orphaned."

Alphin charted a cargo plane to bring the 25 crates of supplies to the area. In addition, he will be performing for the children with friend and fellow musician Damien Horne. The entire trip is funded soley by Alphin.

Alphin summed up his thoughts on his trip, "Whether they are abused across the street or across an ocean, all people deserve freedom and basic human rights. I would spend every nickel I could get my hands on to help these people. It is the worst humanitarian crisis on our earth and it is time we did something to stop it."

Darfur Letter Writing Contest

Brothers & Sisters,

Big & Rich and the MuzikMafia oppose prejudice in any form. We all believe that red and yellow, black and white, we are precious in his sight! That is why we are shining the brightest light we can on a genocide taking place RIGHT NOW in the Darfur region of Sudan.  Sudan is a country on the east coast of Africa where millions of people - farmers, women and children, people just like you and me - have been forced from their villages or killed because of their skin color and birthplace.

At least 400,000 people have been killed, and more than 2 million innocent civilians, have been forced to flee their homes and now live in displaced-persons camps. More than 3.5 million men, women, and children depend on international aid for survival.

Big & Rich and the MuzikMafia are doing everything in our power to stop this violence against our brothers and sisters in Africa and we hope YOU will join us. Nothing will get our elected officials to act faster then a hand-written letter.  So, to encourage all of our Soldiers to make their voices heard we are going to have a CONTEST, which will run August 13, 2007 – November 15, 2007!

Here¹s how it works:

1.  Go to http://www.darfurscores.org

2.  Enter your zip code.

3. Look up the local representative in your area.

4.  Pick the representative with the lowest score (A poor score means they are not helping Darfur to their abilities).

5. Get together with your friends, co-workers, church members, and family - any one you can talk into it - and write a letter to your local representative (MUST BE HAND WRITTEN).

Check out http://www.muzikmafia.com/darfursample.php for sample letters you can copy or use a template.  Some helpful hints for writing your congressmen can be found at http://www.fcnl.org/getin/resources/write_congress.htm

6.  Collect all the letters from your friends and family, address them to your local representative, put a stamp on the letters, and put them in a box or large envelope postmarked to:

MuzikMafia Darfur Campaign
PO Box 331845
Nashville, TN 37203

7.  The MuzikMafia office will count the number of letters you submit and send them onto the proper address
(NOTE:  postage and address MUST be included on Campaign letters for submissions to be eligible for contest).
All submissions must be received by November 15, 2007.  The Soldier that helps get the most number of letters written wins:

1.  An ALL EXPENSES PAID TRIP to the next Nashville MuzikMafia.
2.  A meeting with Big Kenny
3.  A feature spot on http://www.muzikmafia.com and http://www.loveeverybody.org

2nd and 3rd place winners receive a guitar signed by Big Kenny.

50 soldiers will be chosen at random to receive a signed 8x10 photograph of Big & Rich.

SO get to it. We'll be waiting for you here in Nashville!  LOVE EVERYBODY!

Sincerely,

Big & Rich and the MuzikMafia Family

Big & Rich’s New Album, Between Raising Hell And Amazing Grace, Is Certified Gold By The RIAA

NASHVILLE, TN—August 10, 2007—Big & Rich's June 5th release, Between Raising Hell And Amazing Grace, is officially certified gold by the RIAA.  Only nine weeks after it debuted 1 on Soundscan's current country albums chart and fueled by the duo's first ever 1 single, "Lost In This Moment," which recently spent two weeks at the top of both the R&R and Country Aircheck/Mediabase charts, has gone gold.

Big Kenny commented, "We can't believe the impact "Lost In This Moment" has had on our album sales. To sell over a half million records off one single, in only nine weeks, is outstanding. I think it was just time that we had that song in our set, the one that people can cuddle up to and dance together out there."  John Rich added, "The exciting part is that this is just the beginning of what we feel is the best album of our career.  There is just so much on this album that we are proud of and we can't wait to start digging into it."

Big & Rich's next single, "Between Raising Hell And Amazing Grace," will be released August 13th.  John and Kenny will shoot the video for this single in September in Los Angeles, where they'll exercise their acting chops.
