50 Cent To Ignite Red Stripe Reggae SumFest

50 Cent, the biggest selling hip hop artist, is set to thrill fans with his tales from the street, when he appears at the worlds greatest reggae show,  Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest, in Jamaica, this July.

There has been a buzz on the streets of Jamaica since speculations were raised months ago that the hugely popular star would return to the island to perform at Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest.

After much anticipation promoters of the event, Summerfest Productions confirmed that the hip hop icon would headline the festivals Friday night event, Ignition on July 21 in Montego Bay.

Jomo Cato Director of Marketing for Summerfest Productions, said that the show is expected to be tremendously exciting with 50 cents inclusion.

50 Cent is absolutely one of the most exciting personalities in music he has an aura that excites fans even before he touches the stage. We expect this show to be tremendously exciting and a huge favorite with our fans, when you look at the line up for Ignition, it is an event that no one in Jamaica will miss, my advice is to get your tickets early!, Mr. Cato said.

When 50 cent last appeared in Jamaica in 2003, the show set venue records and was the most talked about event that year. Ignition will also feature Jamaicas explosive dancehall star Sizzla, hip hop duo Mobb Deep, Lloyd Banks Lady Saw, Vegas and Germanys international reggae sensation Gentleman

Since he burst unto the scene, 50 Cent has sold over 20 million records and sold out venues in countries around the world.

Jomo Cato said that 50 cent was quite popular in Jamaica because he has a real connection with the Jamaican audience.

Jamaicans admire his rags to riches story and his relentless ambition. Many Jamaicans see a lot of themselves in 50 Cent, someone who is determined to make it despite the odds and has put in the work necessary to succeed, Mr. Cato added.

Carlo Redwood, Group Marketing Manager at Red Stripe, the title sponsors of the event, said that Red Stripe was instrumental in signing the rap mogul.

Red Stripe is responsible for bringing 50 cent to Jamaica for Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest. Our decision to push for his inclusion in the line up this year grew out of our commitment to make this reggae show, the worlds greatest and Jamaicas best. We thought that by including the rap star, who many Jamaicans admire and love, would  only add to the explosive talent at this years showing, Mr. Redwood stated.

In its first week of release, his debut "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" sold 872,000 copies. The album was certified gold in its first week and platinum the next, and it broke the record for first week sales of any major label debut in the entire soundscan era

Fans can expect, 50 Cent to roll out all his huge hits, from the comical How to Rob, which first got him noticed, to the hypnotic In da club, Many men, P.I.M.P, Candy Shop, Wanksta, 21 questions, What up gangsta, and to his latest burners, Best Friends, the duet with Olivia and Outta Control recorded with Mobb Deep. G-Unit members Tony Yayo and Young Buc are also expected to join 50 cent on stage at Ignition.

The Mateel Community Center (MCC) and People Productions are proud to announced that Reggae on the River (ROTR) 2006 just got better and bigger with the addition of 80 new acres. The Dimmick Ranch, combined with the historic French's Camp property, will bring a spacious new concert bowl nearly double in size, two new river bars for camping right below the concert bowl, beautiful old trees, a new paved entry way and room for additional nonprofit food booths. "We are very excited to make this big beautiful place on the river available for this crucial community event. Long live Reggae on the River!" says Tom Dimmick.

Each year, thousands of people from all corners of the globe make the pilgrimage to the Eel River to connect spiritually with old friends and make new ones. It is a "tribal" gathering, a place where human interests and the natural spirit take precedence; a place where hip-hoppers, dreadlockers, and Woodstockers join in dance and share good vibrations while uniting through the universal language of music. Throughout the years, thousands of world-class performers representing all genres of reggae and world music have performed at Reggae on the River. Their music has, and continues to, influence an eclectic mix of some of the biggest names in mainstream music. The unbroken thread that brings together artist and audience year after year is; "the love and the unity that comes out of the music, that we have generated in the music," says Judy Mowatt. "This is what we feel coming back to us from the people." This bond is what sets Reggae on the River apart from other festivals and makes it the preeminent reggae music festival.

ROTR had its humble beginnings as a fundraising concert to rebuild the MCC, which was destroyed by an arson fire in 1983. Twenty-three years later, it has become one of the most famous festivals in the world and Humboldt County's biggest gathering and fundraising event. ROTR has served the community year-round through the MCC's community-based programs. "The history of the creation, support and growth of the Mateel Community Center and Reggae on the River are closely entwined," says Taunya Stapp Executive Director Mateel Community Center. "Our community center has been built and sustained largely by the love and hard work of the community itself, and funding from Reggae on the River. The Reggae festival has fostered peace, love and unity by providing a successful fundraising venue for many other area non-profits as well as the community center. For the past twenty-three years the needs of the Southern Humboldt Community and the community center have grown, and Reggae on the River has grown as well, in a large part to accommodate those needs. The expansion of the festival to the new site will allow us to continue to develop the hall as a venue for the valuable arts, education and social events and programs the Mateel continues to offer and expand every year." After six months work on the new plans ROTR 2006 with the Humboldt County Planning Department and the many federal and county agencies required for compliance, the proposed plan is approved and we are excited to share the details of this year's festival:

The main entrance will be moved to the Cook's Valley exit, 1/2 mile south of the former entrance at French's Camp.

The concert bowl will be moved from French's Camp to the larger Dimmick property, with new amenities and ambience for the concert attendees.

For your convenience, pre-event camping options will be available for purchase at all local ticket outlets:

The Book Of Exodus - The Meaning n The Making Of Bob Marley And The Wailers

By focusing first and foremost on Marley's music, The Book of Exodus
reveals the artist and the man with thrilling freshness and complexity.

Rob Kenner, Editor at Large, VIBE magazine

The Jamaican musician and messenger Bob Marley introduced reggae to the world, and with it, a positive, compassionate, and realistic rebel spirit that has magnetized an ever growing army of devotees in the quarter century since his passing. In her original and insightful THE BOOK OF EXODUS (Three Rivers Press / May 2, 2006 / $14.95), author Vivien Goldman, who chronicled Marleys rise in the 1970s, offers an intimate, first-hand picture of a pivotal period for Marley: the 1976 assassination attempt on his life, and the period of exile he then spent in London, recording Exodus, culminating in his triumphant return to Jamaica at the Peace Concert of 1978.

As a British music journalist, Vivien Goldman was influential in introducing mass audiences to the Rasta sounds of Bob Marley. Working first, as his PR, then as a writer, Goldman was uniquely placed to observe both the development of Bob Marley and his band, the Wailers, and the rise of conscious reggae in its Golden Age. So close was Vivien to Bob and the Wailers that she was a guest at his Kingston home just days before gunmen broke in to kill The Skip, and was often by his side while Exodus was being made. Now, in THE BOOK OF EXODUS, Goldman chronicles the making of this landmark recording, from its conception in politically torn Jamaica to the cathartic release of energized, intense all-night studio recording sessions in London.

But THE BOOK OF EXODUS is so much more than a regular biography or making-of-an-album story. This remarkable work takes us through the history of Jamaican music and politics, as well as Marleys own personal journey from the Trench Town ghetto to his status as global superstar. Exploring the albums spiritual dimension, Goldman examines Marleys faith, Rastafari, and its roots. To trace the biblical themes of the Exodus story and their meaning today, Goldman includes words of wisdom from Marleys Rasta guru, Mortimo Planno, and leaders of different faiths; and also examines other musicians whove interpreted Exodus, from Rossini to Schoenberg and Isaac Hayes, leading up to the Wailers own Exodus.

Released in 1977, just as reggaes fellow rebel music, punk, was blooming, the Exodus song cycle includes majestic Marley classics like "Three Little Birds," One Love, "Jamming," "Waiting in Vain," and, of course, the "Exodus" anthem itself. A pivotal recording in his career, Exodus propelled Marley to the international superstardom he craved, to spread the message of Rasta in groundbreaking island rhythms. This inspirational record expresses a universal tale of pain and hope; of a challenging journey from slavery to freedom, that was first recorded in the Old Testament but grew to resonate in historic flashpoints like the Jewish flight from the Nazis, and the Civil Rights movement. This archetypal narrative only grows in meaning in todays conflicted world.

Among the recollections and revelations in the book are:

  1. The political and human story behind the traumatic assassination attempt on Bobs life by gunmen who invaded his Kingston home.
  2. The true musical process behind the making of Exodus, examined track by track, and its surprising inspiration,
  3. The many meanings of the Exodus and the literal movement of Jah people to the promised land of Africa
  4. Bobs life in the Trenchtown ghetto and the uptown communal household he established at Hope Road in Kingston; and the bands very different existence in exile.
  5. Bobs complex emotional life, and his relationship with Jamaican Miss World, Cindy Breakspeare, the mother of current chart-topper, Damian Marley.

From that privileged perspective, Vivien Goldman now shares the definitive book of her career, a study of Bob Marley's crucial recording Exodus, voted "The Album of the Century" by Time magazine in 1999. Essential reading for anyone who enjoys Marley, this book will also turn the uninitiated on to the work and beliefs of one of the most significant artists of any century.

Author Biography

Vivien Goldman is a widely anthologized writer, broadcaster, and musician who has devoted much of her work to Afro-Caribbean and global music. Her journalism has appeared in the New York Times, Village Voice, Rolling Stone, Spin, Interview, the Daily Telegraph, and Harpers Bazaar. She is the professor of punk and reggae at NYUs Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music. Originally from London, Goldman now resides in New York City. This is her fifth book.

According to the UK Entertainment grapevine, Mikey Dread and the Dread at the controls band are conquering the first leg - the UK leg of the tour with Wicked sounds of sweet roots reggae music. Reggaes Godfather, Mikey Dread and the Dread at the Controls band are Rocking Europe to its core.  Many traveling for hours to catch Mikeys show. This leg of the European tour is proving to be more successful than ever imagined and its only in its 3rd week; apparently the majority of the attendees that came out to see Mikey perform last year, was so thrilled, with that personal magic touch of Mikeys, that they came back this year, bringing a long lots of their family and friends.

There was never a doubt in my mind of the tours potential success, after all this is the Dread at the Controls.  The impact Mikey Dread has on his fans worldwide is colossal. Mikeys performances being the roots - cause and the fans reaction to the performance the effect as he wholeheartedly give and give and give musically to his fans, recognizing and respecting that some had to go through great lengths to see him perform live.

Remember the European tour last year when thousands showed up and Mikey was signing autographs for hours. An ecstatic Mikey says, Everything is going great! Europe still loves me and I am doing several Dub plates of my music for sound systems over here. The Dread is definitely Reggaevated!!!
