About CHAM:

About Everton Blender :

One of the few Jamaican singers to truly bridge the gap between the roots and dancehall reggae styles is the man known as Everton "Blender." When reggae fans hear the opening notes of "Lift Up Your Head," "Ghetto People Song," "Blend Dem," etc., they instantly recognize these songs as the cultural anthems of our time. The large number of hits Everton has accrued is most impressive for an artist who has been in the business for such a seemingly short period of time. But like many of Jamaica's biggest musical stars, the road to fame wasn't a short or easy one.

Everton Williams was born in the parish of Clarendon, Jamaica, but grew up in Kingston 13 on Maxfield Avenue. Everton worked as a painter, construction worker, and decorator, but he realized that the strong chemicals he was working with were not good for his voice or his health in general. With divine help and direction, he decided to leave his job to pursue a singing career. In 1980, he met Phyllis Thompson (who would later become his wife), and moved back to Clarendon. In 1985, Everton and Phyllis' first child, Isha, was born.

There are a million stories in the ghetto. And yet there's only one "Ghetto Story." And like the song says, it's a survival story.

In Jamaica's ultra-competitive music scene, stars are born every day and fade away just as fast. But ever since the mid 1990s, Baby Cham has represented the best of cutting-edge dancehall reggae. His every release seems to bring forth new sounds, new slang, and up-to-the minute ghetto news reports guaranteed to "bust the dance." Spelled with a C (like champagne), Cham should not be confused with any Flipmode Squad affiliate, although he has been known to bust a rhyme from time to time. With his athletic good looks, his booming baritone voice, and a catalog of hits that won't quit, Cham has managed to stay ahead of the times for longer than any other DJ in the game. And with the release of his long-awaited album Ghetto Story, Cham's poised to take dancehall to another level all over again.

Rototom Sunsplash 2008 works on this summer’s lineup
Category: Music

In order to celebrate its fifteenth anniversary in great style, Rototom Sunsplash has already started to work on this summer's cast and we can now confirm various names of great prestige.

As we all know, reggae music is the main form of communication in Jamaica and has been so for various decades; it is a vital language, continuously evolving at the pace of the new generations of artists who use it to tell the story, daily life and contradictions of ghetto life.

The present of Jamaican music will be represented this summer by the mellow voice of JAH CURE, a singer whose vocal extension is exploited in a vast array of great 'conscious' tunes and heart-rending love songs. With his CD 'Parables', TARRUS RILEY has become a sort of musical hero for the Jamaican people, who appreciate his poetic vein and sincere message: in 2007 he was awarded six Reggae Academy Awards – best reggae song, best solo male vocal performance, best reggae recording and best video for his 'She's royal'. Tarrus also won the 'Breakthrough artiste award' thanks to 'She's royal' and the 'People choice award' for the most popular song. It is therefore with great pride that we present Tarrus Riley to the Italian reggae massive.

Another debut at the Rototom Sunsplash festival is that of COLLIE BUDDZ, one of the best newcomers on the international reggae scene: he triumphed in all dancehalls worldwide with his song 'Come around', which is also the title track of his successful CD. Her recent number-one hit 'Daddy' focuses on the sexual abuse of children within many Jamaican families.

The author of this track, QUEEN IFRICA, has proved once again that she is one of the most inspired female voices of reggae music, and we are looking forward to her debut this summer at Rototom Sunsplash. Another debut is that of ALBOROSIE the artist of Italian origin who resides and works in Jamaica and who thanks to his talent, evident in hits such as 'Herbalist' and 'Kingston Town' has now worked his way into the heart of the reggae lovers round the world.

At the 2008 Rototom Sunsplash we shall also meet again many other old friends whose songs always make us dream, namely BERES HAMMONDALPHA BLONDY andLUCIANO. Dancehall fans and all those who love roots reggae will be certainly happy to know that we have confirmed LADY SAW and CE'CILE, as well as LEROY SIBBLES & BARRY LLEWELLYN from the Heptones. Ce'cile conquered the dancehall scene at the end of the year 2000 with her provocative 'Changez' and since then this gritty lady has produced some of the best bashment rhythms and lyrics of our times. Ce'cile owes a lot to Lady Saw, the first dancehall queen in Jamaica who with her provocative attitudes characterizing her long career clearly states that she accepts no discrimination from men in a land where women are constantly underrated. The Heptones were fundamental at the times of rocksteady and gave us great masterpieces even during the Sixties: we will have two members of the original band at Rototom Sunsplash this summer, namely Leroy Sibbles and Barry Llevellyn.

Like all the greatest editions of the festival, also 2008 will feature SUD SOUND SYSTEM. Their new CD, called 'Dammene ancora', should be released in May, and will be very "international", with a long guest-list of Jamaican artists. We are looking forward to hearing their new tracks this summer at Rototom Sunsplash. The confirmation of the presence ofBUSHMAN, born Dwight Duncan, is contemporaneous to the release of his magnificent new CD, 'Get it in your mind'; this artist from St. Thomas can be considered by all means one of the most important voiced of Jamaican new roots.

Other historical names are those of INNER CIRCLE and MICHAEL ROSE. In over thirty-five years of career, Inner Circle have changed extensively, and achieved legendary status at the time of the great Jacob Miller, their late lead vocalist. The hefty Lewis brothers can be considered as a real rhythm machine, which has masterfully combined reggae with rock and black music, and we are really looking forward to seeing them on stage. The hyperactive Michael Rose, in-between various solo CDs, often goes back to his former band partner Duckie Simpson, to reform Black Uhuru, the great roots bands that won a Grammy Award in 1983 for their masterpiece 'Anthem'. His is another great return to Rototom Sunsplash.

Mikey Dread - Rasta In Control

About MIKEY DREAD :

Michael Campbell, a.k.a. Mikey Dread is one of the most influential performers and innovators in reggae music. His abilities, technical expertise, and unique vocal delivery combine to create a unique sound that tells the listener emphatically that it is the "Dread at the Controls." Perhaps Mikey’s work with The Clash has garnered him with the most recognition, but his credentials and resume started long before his eye-opening production on several releases with the renowned Punk Stars from London. His work and interaction with The Clash was a significant event in the integration of reggae into popular music throughout the world. The album, "Black Market Clash", is a brilliant fusion of late 1970’s punk rock and a heavy reggae bass and drum line. The reggae aspect of The Clash’s album distinguished their sound from the other punks that emerged in the 1970’s. Soon thereafter, it was a must for just about every punk band to have a reggae cover song on their album. Mikey was the first Producer ever to produce a UK chart hit for The Clash" Bank Robber" and later produced several reggae cuts on their internationally recognized Album "Sandinista."

Inner Visions "Tribute to Mikey Dread" show in Berkeley April 4th
Category: Music

"Inner Visions" will be at Ashkenaz Music & Dance Community Center, 1317 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley, CA on Friday, April 4th, 2008. Show starts at 9:30pm. Showline: (510) 525-5054 – Tickets: $12.00 general and $10.00 for student w/valid id. It will be an all ages show.

"Inner Visions" will be performing a Bay Area tribute to the legacy of one of reggae’s most influential artist’s, MIKEY DREAD, the original "Dread at the Controls". He was a maverick broadcaster who introduced underground reggae to mainstream radio in the late 1970’s through his Dread at the Controls radio program and was a crucial figure during the punk period when fans and musicians alike began to embrace reggae music of kindred revolutionary spirit. He passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at home with his family and loved ones by his side. He is survived by his wife Monika and six children, including his newest born son, Zylen Jahlight Campbell.

"Inner Visions" hails from St. John, in the US Virgin Islands and offers a very unique sound. With over twenty-five years of experience in the field of reggae music you’d probably ask yourself why you haven’t heard of them before now. St. John is a tourist magnet in the Northeastern Caribbean and work was never a problem. When they’re home, Inner Visions would be a major highlight for the island. Although Soca and Calypso music is the dominant art form, no stay was complete without an Inner Visions performance.

People told them over and over again that if they traveled they would blow up and become a household name! It was not until 2001 that the band heeded the call and did its first official State side tour. It soon became evident to new fans that this band had something that had been missing in the field for years. Today they have a mystical mix of the young and the mature performing together to bring you a sound that touches people of all ages. The band is now joined by "Grasshopper’s" two sons who have driven the band to heights previously unheard of. Their sound is a cultural journey through the musical influences of yester-year! The band has been influenced by many well-known reggae artists. Burning Spear, Culture, Steel Pulse, Aswad, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jacob Miller, Dennis Brown, Beres Hammond (Today) and w/Zap Pow. Third World, Inner Circle, Freddie McGreggor, Ernie Smith, Jimmy Cliff, Chalice, and oh so many more helped shape the sound the band has today.

Inner Visions is an Independent organization. It boasts two strong lead vocalists and a three part harmony that will soothe the savage beast in anyone. They do their own productions and spend quite a bit to ensure that they give their fans the best quality recordings possible.

They have traveled extensively now including Europe last summer 2007, and cry has been the same. "Where were you guys all this time? You are the Virgin Islands best kept secret!" Well, they aren’t a secret anymore!!! So get ready to be "Innergized "!!
