The kings of Red Rocks: Widespread Panic

Widespread Panic to extend record for most shows played

Red Rocks has seen legendary shows by The Beatles, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix and countless others. But it's jam band Widespread Panic of Athens, Ga., that'll extend the record this weekend for the most shows played and the most tickets sold.

Sunday's final show in the three-night stand will be Widespread's 32nd consecutive sellout of Red Rocks.

"They've outdone the Dead. They've outdone Willie Nelson. They've outdone everybody," said promoter Bill Bass.

Fact is, Widespread passed its nearest competition last summer, but no one noticed. This year, the city is acknowledging the band's reign at Red Rocks, with plans to give them a commemorative plaque and perhaps a mayoral proclamation.

At 9,250 tickets per show, that's 296,000 trips to see the band over the years.

"They did have an opening-act show before this count started, when they opened for Blues Traveler," Bass noted, but they're taking the high road and not counting that gig, even if the city has it officially listed.

The run started May 31, 1996, and shows no sign of ending.

"I suspect no one will be at these numbers, because bands don't stay together this long. And bands don't come together every day who can pop out three Red Rocks at a time," Bass said.

Tickle the Truth WSP lyrics :)
Current mood: satisfied

Tickle The Truth

She complains you look different
Yeah but I'm keeping my name
Your not drinking the usual
I said it all tastes the same
She fled you smell like LA
Yeah but check out my new frames
Oh these cool shades make you look bitchin'

She split from our table
And mumbled remember to tip
I had a twenty I'm ready
But I said I might skip
Some people act funny
When your just trying to be hip
Spent a little time outside the kitchen

Magnificent miles
Trying out this new walk
And people are watching
Like stepping on chalk
The learning curves behind
Like a memory stall
But in all it's an innocent mission

She rang me last night
Said that wasn't you was it?
I said all colors are money
Fit for deposit
Half naked right now,
I've got soup in the closet
Sometimes with words I'm just fishing

Should I come over?
It sounds like you need me
I said hey that's funny
You sound like my TV
Just try this thing once
It'll make life so easy
And even puppies come under suspicion

Then a lover came knocking
And I open the door
With an apple in my hand
She said what's that for
It's the past and the future
But I shouldn't say more
That's just my radio hissing

Well I know you too well
And I know you're no villain
I said don't look now
Cause I'm ripping of Dylan
What you see is a little crusty
The real things the filling
A sound byte from above a beautician

All the jokers in this world
They're swarming like bees
Catch one to the head
Make you fall to your knees
Lenny Bruce was a profit
Of the 1960's
Two shows of tonight's inquisition

And drifted and dreaming
Lost in a bed
Body's ups and down
Are just food for the head
It's front page and french-fries
And the funny pages instead
We tickle the truth into submission

And all it's an innocent mission
Just tickle the truth into submission
And tickle the truth into submission

16 years ago today....
Current mood: peaceful
Category: Life

I lived in San francisco.
Fire was raging through the Oakland Hills, leaving many of my my friends homeless.
I lived in a very small apartment.
Friends stayed, ate, drank and watched the Simpsons.
My midwife kept making them turn the TV down.
I had a baby girl.
I named her Kyra.
and since that day, I have discovered in myself a love that I never knew possible.
Today she is 16.
She is beautiful and talented and simply amazing. She makes me see things in ways that I would never have thought of.
She is my angel, my teacher, my friend.
She is my Kyra and today, while living in Turkey for this year, she turns 16.
Happy Birthday Baby!!!
I Love You!
