LISTEN TO THE POETS PEOPLE
Category: Music

listen to the poets people - listen to them roar
because whatever feeling you feel has been felt before

the clinton obama thing is dragging on like a puppy tied to the bumper of a speeding buick-it just keeps getting bloodier and more painful to watch the longer it goes on-
make sure to BUY the new my morning jacket record june 10th-it is good and if no one buys music anymore then up and coming bands will not be able to quit their day jobs and write more music we have never heard before- the only reason anyone knows my music is because I was able to quit my job at the bike shop in 1997 and write songs- sooooo many people bought "Korn" cd's (the largest band on immortal/epic records at the time) and the trickle down of that money allowed epic records to afford to be able to offer me a record deal- its like everyone decided to stop giving to the arts - and if the next Neil Young has to work full time at a starbucks in ontario so he can afford a new guitar then he wont be spending much time writing new songs to touch us all and inspire other musicians to do better- SORRY ABOUT THE RANT- i have downloaded free music too but we have to be aware of what the end result is and who loses in the end-

NASHVILLE IS SO FANTASTIC IN SPRINGTIME- I have been writing lots of new songs- music is fun-
AUSTIN CITY LIMITS FESTIVAL is gonna be much fun- I may be doing some acoustic tours before the end of the year- the new Dr. Dog songs sound good on their myspace page- it was good to see so many friends/fans at sxsw- ran into billy joe shaver at the super suckers show and got some good hugs and photos- i rent my upstairs attic apt to justin townes earle and his new cd is super but you gotta see him live- cory yountes - my sometimes keyboard player for the last 5 years- is justin's singin sidekick and they are really good together- I will be at bonnaroo walking around and seeing the rock music- i may get up and sing with somebody - who knows- hope to see everyone in the heart of tennessee-sorry for the delay in the next record but since i wrote the last record i have had a baby boy- a divorce - and a tree fall on my mothers head-
things are good now and i "hope" to have something out by the begining of next year- the is just too much reality-
till then- see you at the exit/in (june 20-nashville tn)

also - just to see if anyone out there has a heart that feels enough to break

my 3 year old daughter Belly Bare woke me the other morning to tell me she was crying because she was happy and i could tell she was confused because it had never happened to her before -
i asked her why she was so happy and she said
"because I love you"

I COULD HAVE BEEN GREEN

I COULD HAVE BEEN GREEN

Kermit,Ben Franklin, the Incredible Hulk, Al Green- all green - all badass-and don't forget Shrek-
the email to my booking agent from the casting agency for Dreamworks'  "SHREK THE MUSICAL" on Broadway asked
"has Bobby ever considered doing Broadway
well "no" is the answer to that question and "WOW" was my response.  Never did I ever think I would be on Broadway in NYC auditioning for anything. But sure enough we were booking the flight and I was out buying all the Shrek dvd's I could find. As well as any Mike Meyers work with him doing the "if it ain't Scottish it's crap" material.  They sent me 3 different scenes of which I would be reading from as well as some sheet music I would be singing.  When I got to the audition I realized why I was there. They were running short on big manly men on broadway.  They must have put out the word that they wanted LARGE and LOVABLE.  What they got appeared to be was  large, past their prime broadway 30 somethings wearing green t'shirts or pants- and me.  Seems that the casting agency asked CMJ who they thought would make a good Shrek and I guess CMJ thought that I had the biggest, fattest, and loudest head that had ever played CMJ - either way I felt all the eyes of the other guys auditioning upon me as if I was a mustache on their mother. They didn't understand it nor did they want to see it.    I obviously did not fit the theater district audition norm (i.e. never been in drama club, I laughed endlessly and did't cry once during broke back mountain, don't know any  of the words to any of the songs in "LE MIS", ect, ect,) . It was so odd to be in a place I never anticipated being while surrounded by people who had never thought of doing anything but. When I walked in I realized that i had never auditioned for anyone for anything ever, but the nervous feelings never took hold. I got to use my acoustic and sing one of my songs and it really felt like they liked it.  All the other guys had walked in with the sheet music of "somewhere over the rainbow" or some other standard of something they new they could nail, handed the sheet music to the piano player and then sang their song. I dont think the 4 people who were auditioning me had ever had someone sing one of their own songs with an acoustic guitar and I felt pretty good about it.  Then I had to read lines with another guy in my scottish Shrek voice as I reminded them that I had never done any of this before. I got to read along with the lines while I read and it went without a hitch.  Then I had to sing the "SHREK" song. It was such a bad song.  And I had to sing it in their key they wrote the sheet music in and not the key that  I had rehearsed it in.  I told them I could only do it in my key and they made an exception and let me try.  Either they are just really nice people or they were really sincerely blown away.  Then it was time to go back to the streets of NYC and think about what happened.  I was high- I really felt good but was a bit torn because the thought of moving the whole family to NYC from Nashville was not apealing. The mom's and dad's of manhatten always look overwhelmed as they scurry behind their strolers and I did not want to be one of them.  As the months went by I slowly realized the role of Shrek was not going to be offered to me.  I could've been green but it just wasn't meant to be.  I guess I am gonna have to stick to my day job of guitar amplifiers, truck stops, and songs about my own FEELINGS and EMOTIONS.  It would have been great to send my kids to school with the answer to the question "what does your daddy do?" as "SHREK, yeah the green guy, SHREK, that is what MY dadddy does"
But I guess they are gonna stick by the ole "ROCK and ROLL SINGER, yeah, my Dad's  a ROCK AND ROLL SINGER" and Broadway may just have to make do with "large and loveable"

A STORM - A TREE - MY MOTHERS HEAD

on thursday january 31st-2008 a tree fell on my mother's head

at 10pm at night during a thunder storm a tree fell on top of my mother while she was watching tv in hendersonville tn.
she was alone in the house and crawled out of under the roof, ceiling, and broken 2x4s - found a phone -
and called the fire dept. She has 2 cracked vertebra in her neck and is a bit beat up but she is
gonna be fine. My dad was in Florida and I was in Seattle but the rest of my family was there to take
care of her. Thanks for all the concerned emails and thank god it did not kill her.
here is a link to the story in the local paper

"THE COALITION OF MUSICIANS WHO LOVE THEIR MOTHERS -BUT HATE TREES"
I think anyone reading this should immediately call their mother right now and make sure that
their mom is NOT sitting on a couch because it is obviously very dangerous

Bobby Bare, Jr. New Release 9-26-06 and More!

From BSHQ:
"I got lucky enough to be invited up to the recording session for this record. There is only one Bobby Bare Jr. -- and this is him at his finest. It doesn't come out for another coupla months -- but hey, I'm listening now." Jim James, My Morning Jacket

After wood-shedding for weeks with some of the most innovative musicians from a vibrant southeastern talent pool, Bobby and friends knocked out The Longest Meow in one arduous session that he calls "the most fun I have ever had with music in one day."

Look for Bobby Bare, Jr. on tour with Drive-By Truckers this October! We'll keep you posted as details unfold!

Thursday, 04/06/06, Nashville Rage Magazine

"Under The Wire: '11 Songs, 11 People, 11 Hours'"
That's how Bobby Bare Jr. sums up the recording process for his latest album, tracks for which were laid down in a marathon 11-hour session at Nashville's Ocean Way studios last week.
The core band for the recording included Jones, Broemel and Hallahan with special guests Carey Kotsionis, Corey Younts, Doni Schroader, Mike Grimes, Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Deanna Varagona (Lambchop) and Ben Martin (Clem Snide). Do the math, and this band goes to 11.
