Remember me?
Current mood: thoughtful

Hey friends- I suppose a wee bit of an update is in order, eh?

So, this past summer, I took a semester at Argosy University here in the twin cities... I was majoring in veterinary technology and decided about two weeks before the end of the semester (it seriously hit me like a very large tonka truck) that VT was not what I should be doing, so I transferred to Concordia-St. Paul this fall.  Let me tell you, folks, I LOVE it! What an amazing atmosphere, and what a difference I already feel-- just by being here for a few days. It's good!

Though, I don't like being in that awkward "Hi-we-have-a-class-together-or-I've-met-you-before-and-I-sort-of-know-your-name-but-we're-not-really-friends-yet" stage.  I also want to make friends with people my own age, but most of the people my own age are juniors and seniors (and I am a mere freshman) and have their own groups of friends already.... I just need to break through these insecurities and concerns, and realize that I've only been at school for two days. DUH!  I'll make friends soon enough...

and hey-- question for those who are reading: How long do you have to know someone before you can ask them to be your friend-date to a wedding? I'm going to a wedding on Oct. 7th, and my invitation was addressed to "Bri and guest" and I think it would actually be fun to bring that "and guest" part of the invite. BUT all of my guy-friends that I regularly hang out with are A) bringing their girlfriend/fiance/wife to the wedding, B) living in another state/country/...timezone? or C) in the wedding or getting married themselves...

soo... anybody want to be my date to a wedding on October 7th? :)

Oops- dad's calling... gotta go-- will write more soon!

The Everything Test

There are many different types of tests on the internet today. Personality tests, purity tests, stereotype tests, political tests. But now, there is one test to rule them all.

Traditionally, online tests would ask certain questions about your musical tastes or clothing for a stereotype, your experiences for a purity test, or deep questions for a personality test. We're turning that upside down - all the questions affect all the results, and we've got some innovative results too! Enjoy :-)

..> ..> ..>..>

You are more emotional than logical, more concerned about others than concerned about self, more religious than atheist, more loner than dependent, more lazy than workaholic, more traditional than rebel, more artistic mind than engineering mind, more idealist than cynical, more follower than leader, and more introverted than extroverted.

As for specific personality traits, you are religious (90%), artistic (86%), musical (81%), romantic (81%).

In the spirit of giving thanks...
Current mood: thankful

I think it's interesting that Thanksgiving is just automatically that time of year that forces people to think about what they're really thankful for in the first place.  I'm no different-- I just think it's interesting.

For what am I thankful?  So many things:

I am thankful for my family. I am thankful for parents who love me so much that they won't let me starve, drive a broken car, or not get my hair cut.  I am even more thankful that they have the means to support me if I need it. I am thankful that my mom is such a wonderful friend and understands my problems more than my cookbook does.  I am thankful that my dad's "stern lectures" stem from his love for me, and not from a disappointment in what I'm doing with my life. I am thankful that I have a brother who is just amazing, talented, and hilarious.

I am thankful for my sister-friend. :)

I am thankful for my friends, both new and old, close and far away.  I am thankful for friends with cats named Jack, friends who will drive far away places with me, or go with me to get my nose pierced. I am thankful for friends that make me awkward.  I am thankful for friends whom I used to live with, friend that I do live with, and friends that I will live with.  I am thankful for friends to eat a Thanksgiving dinner with. I am thankful for friends in other countries that are not celebrating thanksgiving right now.

I am thankful for friends who know the real me, and love me anyway.

I am thankful that today, tomorrow, and the next day, that I will have food, clothes, and a place to rest my head.  I am thankful for the opportunity I have everyday to tell equally-blessed people about others who are not so lucky.

I am thankful for phrases like, "What's your gum?" "Your face is in my purse!" "Arggg! I'm a monster!" "I know!!" "Hey, sister-friend."  " "...Well... it's been awkward!"  "I'll give you a hint, it was in my butt."  "That's what she said." and many more, because they don't make sense to everybody, but they make sense to me. :)

I am thankful for broken jars, and random kids with band-aids.  I am thankful for dogs.  I am thankful for my glasses, because I can play fun games with them when I'm bored at Petsmart- like, "Now I read it, now I can't."  I am thankful for good grammar.  I am thankful for mousse.  I'm thankful that I can spell mousse.

I am thankful for music that makes me want to dance. I am thankful for people who will dance with me.  I am also thankful for people who refuse to dance with me. (coughryancough) I am thankful for people who still are my friend even though I give them a really hard time about stuff.

I am thankful for fellow Christians who keep me accountable.

And of course, the seemingly obligitory, but no less important or real, thankfulness for Jesus, whose sacrifice made all that other stuff possible. Thanks Jesus. :)

I am thankful that this list isn't even the tip of the iceburg.  I am thankful that on a holiday that inspires thankfulness, I can actually find things for which to be thankful.

I pray that all of you can think of things for which you are thankful, and I hope that your thought process is not just inspired by the need to look up your recipie for stuffing.

I am thankful for all of you!

Now I'm disappointed.
Current mood: disappointed

If Christians had given the traditional 10 percent tithe of their income to their churches in 2004, instead of the 2.56 percent that they actually gave, there would have been an additional $164 billion available, according to a report released in October called "The State of Church Giving through 2004."

If the churches chose to funnel just $70-80 billion of that additional income to missions and humanitarian works, the basic needs of every person on the globe would be provided.

(Quoted from RELEVANT Magazine, Issue 23, November-December 2006)

Something that I frequently say at Feed My Starving Children is, "God has blessed us with enough resources-- enough food, enough water, enough shelter, etc.--to support the whole world... those resources are just not evenly distributed.

It's just incredibly frustrating. Frustrating because I see this problem in myself--- I just choose not to do everything I can to change it.

Cringe-worthy conversation
Current mood: bouncy

A woman came up to my register today and began putting her items up on the counter.  All of a sudden, she stopped to listen to the radio petsmart advertisments that we have playing all day in the store. The ad mentioned donations would prevent unnecessary euthanasia in animals at shelters.  After the ad played, she looked puzzled, and then asked:

"What would they do with the euthanasia?"

me: The donations would help animals find homes so they wouldn't use euthanasia unless it was absolutely necessary.

Woman: What do euthanasia have to do with it?

Me: (assuming she meant "does"... also assuming we're still talking about the same thing) Well, euthanasia means putting them to sleep.

Woman: They're killed?

Me: Essentially.

Woman: I thought that was just a rumor.

Me: ... what?

Woman: Do they eat them?

Me: ...the vets?

Woman: no. the kids.

Me: *perplexed look* kids?

Woman: In asia.

Then I realized that she meant youth in Asia. Not, euthanasia. And here I thought that mistake was only made on TV.  Wow.

I will be blogging again soon to let everyone know what's going on here, but I just wanted to share this convo with you all.  It's... wow.

Satan's lies and my heart
Current mood: exhausted

Currently I'm emotionally overwhelmed.  Without going into too much detail, I'll just say that I've been recently involved with helping someone who's going through a really tough time.  It's been a pretty intense few days for everyone involved.  Several times this person has said to me, "You're the only one I have.  The only one in the whole world that's here for me."  I quietly responded with something about  it not being true, that God was always there even if it felt like He wasn't.  We talked about that for a while and I read the Bible with her and prayed with her and told her everything would be okay.

Going home after my visit I found myself feeling guilty that I couldn't do more for her, thinking maybe I should go back and spend more time with her, or do more to make everything better for her... and I started saying to myself, "I really am the only one she has right now."  I hate it when Satan starts to creep in like that. I don't hear him say, "You're fat." "You're ugly." "No one can love you." because God's voice saying, "You're beautiful." "You're valuable." "I will always love you."  is always so much louder.  So Satan comes in with things like, "You're the only one that can help her."  "It's up to you to fix this."  "No one else is there for her." because it's harder for me to hear God say, "Relax, I have this under control." The devil twists my emotions and makes me feel guilty, tempting me to sacrifice more than I should to fix something I'm incapable of fixing.  He allures me to try (and ultimately fail) to become the rock for her to stand on, which in turn draws her to shift her faith to me, rather than to God.

It's just a further reminder to me that the enemy is craftier that I often awknowledge, his temptations custom-built to emphasize our weaknesses. (Kind of a "duh" moment for me)  With this re-realization I've been able to step back and trust God with this whole situation and stop relying so heavily on myself. At least for the moment. Ahh, learning.

And now, a completely different topic....

Also on my heart is the Youth Encounter ministry team that's going to Australia in January.  At the moment I'm trying to discern whether I'm feeling called to be there, or if my heart is just restless and wants to travel again.  I've finished the application and I'm just processing and praying to see if I should pursue it.

So there's life as I know it.  Thanks for reading.
