husky-twangy femme fatale intrigue!
Current mood: evil
From Virginia Living magazine, August 2008 issue...
This excellent late-2007 release comes from a Richmond group that describes itself as "a honky-tonk band with two hard-talking sisters, a fiddler, a drummer and shots all around." Buttercup makes country noir – think George Jones in a David Lynch movie – and the husky-twangy vocals of Cassandra Cossitt and Octavia Carpin exude femme-fatale intrigue. The slow-moving "River of Whiskey" alone is worth the price of the disc – and a shot.

pedal steel
A little while back Buttercup's fiddler Maestro Spike picked up an old pedal steel down at the WalMark (same place he got his drivers license and high school diploma). Well he brings it down to the basement when the mood hits him, and we been having some fun for sure. We recently debuted the new sound to a very enthusiastic (though somewhat inebriated) crowd at Bottoms Up PIzza. Here are the pedal steel songs so far:
Playboy (Wynn Stewart)
Weary Blues from Waitin (Hank Sr)
Out of My Mind (Don Rich and the Buckaroos)
Lonely Street (Bill Phillips, Kitty Wells)
Half a Mind (Ernest Tubb)
Foggy River (Jean Shepard)
Apartment 9 (Johnny Paycheck)
I'll Go Down Swingin (Porter Wagoner)
Pretty World Today (Wynn Stewart)
Other new covers:
Big Ball's in Cowtown (Bob Wills)
If you got the money I got the time (Merle Haggard)
I Wonder Where You Are Tonight (Louvin Bros)

Buttercup in Dutch! Yeehah!
Review by Freddie Celis at www.rootstime.be! He may be panning us for all we know... Scroll down for an amusing translation obtained electronically at www.babelfish.com...
BUTTERCUP EVIL FOR YOU Website - Myspace Mail: info@buttercupmusic.com Label : Timanco Music CD-Baby
(valsam)

TRANSLATION:
Buttercup are the name of honky from Richmond, Virginia which is tonk-groep composed from two OK ladies is the zussen Cassandra Cossitt and Octavia Carpin, a violist Mike Tighe, leadgitarist John Hanor and a drummer David Stover. Itself says them that "drink them, cheat and cry"-muziek from the old box bring that its origin find in the hillbilly hillbilly hillbilly-sound or the years 40.50 and 60 the fourteen numbers on "Evil For You has leg personally written a mix or covers or such klassiekers and songs. The countrymuziek prevail in these songs which exist both from lively deuntjes and from emotion-full ballads. The group finds that they much bring honester music than strongly commercialised and unauthentic nashville countrymuziek which dezer summon on the countryliefhebbers are released. "Patsy Cline meets TOMs Waits" are another description which I have retrieved somewhere on the electronic motorway. It is laughed and is cried in the songs which is all built around irrisistible rhythms which there for care that your feet remain always as much as a beetje in movement. There is present bezieling indeed much in this music where you a feeling gets that action Buttercup in your own living stands. Frequently a Day "can nicely and swings sing along you on own numbers such as" Walk Away "," half Empty "and the walsje" Queen For. Also beautiful its some covers such as "Walking The dog" of Webb Pierce and the Cindy Walker-raritysong "It's The Bottle Talking". Such as each countryband their murder ballad by means of the number "The Ballad or Katie Gallows" have written also Buttercup. The titeltrack "Evil For You" is purebred honky tonk song which can be tasted by all linedanserslinedansers linedansers. Son if The Pioneers-lid time spencer wrote "Don Juan" to the singing numbers (he's a gentleman from Mexico, he's a mucho playing Romeo"), real funsong and for me also the best number on this plate, with the superb cover of the Kitty Wells-countryklassieker" Makin Believe, a number which we know also in other versions of Emmylou Harris and Roy Orbison. "Evil For You" of Buttercup is a plate which you find or nothing or terrible finds because you are a liefhebber of this genre. I can have fun there in any case fine. And I hope of you the same (valsam)

Review: Buttercup’s "hillbilly noir" like a Cline-Waits collab!
"I love this record! It is the best CD that I have purchased this year. It is a true celebration of the human heart in all of its beauty and ugliness...the fickle heart, the cheating heart, the lonesome heart, the possessive heart, the broken heart, the evil heart, the vengeful heart etc. It effectively plays on honky tonk cliches like the therapeutic benefits and tragic consequences of whisky, the road and a smoking gun and makes them get into your soul like an irresistable pulp fiction novel. This music is hillbilly noir. Pour yourself a Maker's Mark, don your Stetson or fedora (either will do), grab a hold of your sweetheart and spin her across the dance floor. In this world of comparisons, think Patsy Cline collaborating with Tom Waits."

Evil for You: The Bluesbunny’s album of the month!
The Bluesbunny Music Reviews
November Album of the Month
Buttercup's Evil For You
Woman and guns. Now there's a cocktail full of trouble. This thought was brought to the Bluesbunny's mind by the glorious cover of Buttercup's new album "Evil for You". Reminiscent of the gaudy covers to old pulp fiction novels, it sets the scene for 14 tracks of country music like they used to do before Nashville overdosed it with saccharine. Just the kind of thing that you might get if Patsy sat down next to Ida Lupino and they did a duet in that classic movie "Road House". This is torch singing country style in good old fashioned black and white.
It was hard to find fault with this album. In fact, we gave up trying. Cassandra Cossit and Octavia Carpin's vocals intertwine to give a spellbinding yet world weary feel. Respectful of their musical heritage, this band take a mix of lesser known covers and their own compositions and transport them into a land thought long forgotten. Like any good "B" movie, the subjects of these songs are a mixed bunch of the unfortunate, the lost, the lonely and those seeking redemption. They drown their sorrows in "A River of Whiskey" and you can just feel the despair coming through in John Hanor's guitar solo. At Bluesbunny Towers, we do like songs that involve the demon drink. "It's The Bottle Talkin'" is a classy slice of melodrama about the times when there really was no such thing as a sensitive man unless he had a drink in him. There is not a bad song here but we have a particular soft spot for the positively jaunty "Cowboy Poets and Honky Tonk Heartthrobs". Oh, and whilst we hate to admit it (Bluesbunny has longstanding issues with fiddles) the star of the show on this album is Mike Tighe's remarkably tasteful and effective fiddle playing.
Buttercup have managed a fine balance with this album. It sounds like a reverential tribute to the glory days of country music but it still manages to be fresh and interesting. In the interests of science (of course!), we poured ourselves a glass of Virginia Gentleman as we listened, closed our eyes and found ourselves in a bar at a truck stop falling for the kind of woman (scarlet lipstick, chain smoking, world weary) that they just don't make anymore. Oh Buttercup, will you sing another song for me?
Available by worldwide mail order from CD Baby.
Standout Tracks:
§ Cowboy Poets and Honky Tonk Heartthrobs – A jaunty journey through the neon lit streets of hillbilly life
§ Walk Away – the ideal song to open a country album
§ River of Whiskey – this took us all the way back to Ida Lupino and "One for My Baby"

Buttercup gets a nod from Raging Bullard, Detroit News
An aside to transplanted Southerners...
If you're into cheatin' honky tonk music, there's a new star on the horizon: Buttercup, a Virginia band featuring two sisters with "iffy" reputations and, apparently, a passing acquaintance with 1800 tequila.
They offer an original sound, citing influences ranging from George Jones to Dean Martin to Mickey Spillane. In their album, "Evil for You," sisters Cassandra Cossitt and Octavia Carpin live up to the billing of honest music. For Metro Detroit's thousands of transplanted Southerners, chalk up Buttercup as a cure for that fake country music flowing out of Nashville.

Forest George reviews us and Grandpa Eddie in Richmond Music Journal
Rocking at Grandpa Eddie's
Grandpa Eddie's Alabama Ribs & BBQ restaurant is like being in a different era with its old-style dining booths, black tabletops and dark red seats. The feel is rustic, country and western with good old Southern cooking. Musical coordinator Jack Taggart likes live music in a restaurant setting. "It has a greater demographic appeal than the regular bar scene, so you attract a wider range of people."
The acoustics are excellent. The music sounds great in the front, even better in the back. It sounds good at the bar right next to the entrance, and even from there you have an accessible view of the stage. On this particular evening, the turnout for Buttercup was good. People came to eat and enjoyed the music.
Buttercup's rockabilly was a fitting inaugural act for this new venue. The band, founded in 2004, features two sisters, Cassandra "Moondog" Carpin and Octavia "T-bone" Cossitt, and they would have made Patsy Cline proud with their hard-worn, laid-back, country crooning. The women also play rhythm guitar and bass, backed by John "PhatTele" Hanor on lead guitar, Mike "Spike" Tighe on fiddle and David "daCat" Stover on drums.
They wear old-style State Fair country outfits which fit the music, a throwback to Cline, Wanda Jackson, Janis Martin, Merle Haggard, Jim Reeves, Hank Williams and other fine old-school country artists. They also performed originals from their debut album, "Evil For You."
Grandpa Eddie's is located in the Innsbrook area near Cox and and Three Chopt roads. They plan to continue live music from 8:30 to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, with a variety of genres, including blues and rock. (Editor's note: They appear to be booked through January already.)
-- Forest N. George III
That's right Forest! Grandpa Eddie's has great food, goodlooking customers, and the music aint bad either! And for more insight into River City's bustling music scene, go to Richmond Music Journal at http://www.mindspring.com/~rmjournal/index.html .
Thank you Grandpa Eddie, Forest and RMJ for supporting local music!

honeyed words from richmond.com
Saturday, August 18Buttercup at Poe's Pub
With two guitar-playing chicks at its forefront, Buttercup revels in delivering punchy Country-Western licks that pay homage to timeless genre subject matter – like reaching the bottom of a whiskey bottle and honky-tonk heartthrobs. Factor in some rock and roll attitude and a wicked fiddler, and you've got some music that Pulp Fiction's Vincent Vega and Mia Wallace would be happy to cut a rug to. With 3rd Wave. 9:30 p.m. $5.
