A first-time director, Bryan Bertino gives us his love letter to 70s Horror: THE STRANGERS. Kristen and James return from a bit of a hectic wedding to James' father's summer home to find that they are being toyed with by three masked strangers. And that's about all I can say about the film.
What this film is about is sunspension build-up, and especially in today's hack-n-slash horror gore fests, it's a breath of fresh air. These two people love each other, and what makes is frightening is that these masked strangers are people like you or me - they talk, they feel, they hate.
One of the more realistic horror films to have been released, and I applaud Bryan Bertino for making an original horror film and praise him for creating three genuinely creepy masked strangers.
Liv Tyler gives a genuinely good performance as Kristen and Scott Speedman is okay as James, I am not the biggest fan of his, but he is in no way a shitty actor.
What is scary about this is you just experience it - if you think about it a lot of stuff does not make sense, but the three masked strangers explain all of their actions in one sentence: 'Because you were home.' and THAT'S the scary part, they are just there because this couple is and they just want to fuck around with this couple and give them the fright of their lives.
More creepy and eerie than jumpy, THE STRANGERS ascends to levels of horror to such classics as Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist where you just focus on these characters in this terrifying situation.
In no way is this film perfect, but it is very impressive for a debut feature directorial. I recommend highly to genre fans!
I'm also looking forward to The Incredible Hulk but the Blu-Ray edition currently has no release date whereas the DVD edition will be released on October 23.
I just wanted to blog about those because those are the high-definition titles I'm excited about, yet no-one will care!
Hope you are all going well, and I will see you in my next random blog
All the evil in this world
Current mood: angsty
Category: Blogging
Has anyone else noticed that there is so much evil in this world?
People willing to kill other people.
People wanting to kill animals.
People willing to rape other people.
People willing to steal from other people.
This world is just so full of evil and sometimes I wonder if one can be happy sharing a world with those one doesn't feel safe with.
What scares me most when you talk about people is a group willing to go along with something - most of Germany going along with the Nazis in World War II, rich up-themselves celebrities paying millions of dollars to the "church" of $cientology, drug dealers and those who want to pay hundreds of dollars for a quart of coke for a quick high, and Disney for God's sakes. They know how to market stuff.
A lot of evil comes from money and what people choose to do with that money. A lot of the time what people choose to do with that money is waste it or put it towards a bad cause. Plus, I just plain don't trust charities.
If you think about it there is nothing BUT evil in this world. We just need to fight the evil like in an awesome comic book movie. Dibs on out of control telepsychosis like Phoenix in X-Men 3!
But on a more serious note I'm so glad I know people who aren't evil and are truly kind and good.

The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor
Current mood: amused

So this is my first review blog entry. I'll be reviewing the book "The Looking Glass Wars" by Frank Beddor.
This is a re-imagining (of sorts) of Lewis Carroll's classic books "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Alice Through the Looking Glass", where the main character is actually name Alyss, whose mother is killed by Alyss' aunt, Redd, who harnesses the power of black imagination, whereas Alyss and her mother use white imagination. The queen is murdered in front of Alyss, and Hatter Madigan is allocated to protect Alyss. They jump into The Pool of Tears which is actually a portal to other puddles. Alyss lands in 19th century London under the reign of Queen Victoria, and her mind is warped by humans telling her about Wonderland and how much it doesn't exist. Hatter Madigan is separated from her and searches for her for 13 years, but will he be able to restore her memory of Wonderland and help Alyss defeat Redd (who has plummeted Wonderland into a depressing Queendom) in time?
Well, well, well. It seems that darker versions of classic children's stories are starting to pop up everywhere, from very heroic Alysses to very deranged and murderous Alices to warped Dorothy and Toto, to a dark and dangerous Snow White, and the list goes on. But this novel isn't completely depressing. Frank Beddor manages to slip humour into little nooks and crannies of the story enough to make you care about the characters, and the story itself moves along at quite a fast pace. Beddor has intertwined his re-imagining of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland with the reality of 19th century London, even including Lewis Carroll and a character in the story, who turns Alyss' memories of Wonderland into the "pure garbage" we know today (in the book, Alyss loses confidence with Carroll and claims never to want to see her again, as it has made her life miserable).
The book is excessively clever, right down to the finale. The characters and references Beddor has managed to put into this novel are amazing. The only thing I didn't like about it was the caterpillars (who are oracles) were not in the novel enough, as they are my favourite things about the Wonderland books. Oh, and the Cheshire cat is transforms from a purring kitten into a huge, hulking ravenous assassin for Redd. It's pretty sweet.
Beddor makes this very fantastical and very bizarre world extremely believable and very well emotionally-connected, making the reader fear about the state that Wonderland is in. Overall, this novel is great for fans of the original novels but is also great for fantasy lovers (like me) or general bookworms.
