Release date: 06 February, 2007
this isn't so much of what i thought was the best of 06, rather what i enjoyed the most. its at 26 because if i kept it at 10 or 20, i'd be missing out some amazing albums. if i rounded up to 30, the rest would just serve as filler. comments please.....
.Tom Waits-Orphans Bawlers, Brawlers, and Bastards. three disc, three styles. all typical badass tom waits
.Midlake-The Trials of Vanoccupanther nothing new. damn near perfectly done though. obvious elements of fleetwood mac.
.Margot and The Nuclear So and So's-The Dust of Retreat(re-issue) so it didn't offically come out this year. but 06 was my first exposure to this music. some of my friends call it "gimmicky". well ok, the meows in the last song are a little too music. regardless, this disc is amazing indie rock.
.MewithoutYou-Brother, Sister the most mature and advance mwy disc to date. the spider songs are horrible and pointless but the rest of this is pure mwy bliss.
.Jose Gonzalez-Veneer(re-release) yep, another re-release. oh well. beautiful voice, beatiful guitar, and a cover of the knife's "heartbeats" to boot.
.Silversun Pickups-Carnavas my bloody valentine meets earlier smashing pumpkins. yep, that's a dude singing. just go see them live(and bring ear plugs)
.The Knife-Silent Shout sweden's best siblings doing dark dance music. expect this band to explode anytime soon.
.Rainer Maria-Catasrophe Keeps Us Together rainer maria had released a couple duds up to this point. by far their best and most honest album to date.
.Ester Drang-Rocinate jade tree's best kept secert. the band lost the voice with gentle music for a more intellegent rock styling with obvious steely dan influence.
.Joseph Arthur-Nuclear Daydream i knew nothing about this guy until a recent issue of paste arrived at my house. i threw in the sampler disc and heard the song "black lexus" and was blown away. i bought the cd the next day.
.Cat Power-The Greatest so maybe its looked down on for a man to listen to chan marshell. i dont care. her best album to date.
.Gomez-How We Operate this band had been around a while with me giving them any notice. i downloaded this just to check them out. they come of as a indie band that wishes they were more mainstream but still want the indie cred(if that make sense). nevertheless, they're amazing.
.Appleseed Cast-Peregrine if you don't know them by now, i can no longer be your friend. while the bands style has stayed somewhat the same throughout the years, they change it just enough each disc to keep it interesting.
.Unwed Sailor-The White Ox oh johnathon ford, everything you do is badass. you'll never disappoint. beautiful instrumental music for fans of godspeed you black emporer.
.The Format-Dog Problems pop music for hipsters.
.The Scourge of The Sea-Make Me Armored local boys playing amazing indie/pop. the album never gets old.
.Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan-Ballad of the Broken Seas ok, i wont lie, i haven't heard this in its entirity, but i have heard enough to form an opinion. on paper, the beautiful isobel formerly of scotish twee popster's belle and sebastian and ex frontman to alternative band the screaming trees makes no sense. recorded, you'll forget everything about their histories.
.Starflyer 59-My Island other than mxpx, this is tooth and nail's longest running act. jason martin is damn near genius. each of his albums are much different than the last and most times than not, better too.
.Brazil-The Philosophy of Velocity i've followed this band since their first ep on fearless records. in this time, i've watched the band grow up and mature as well. they finally ditched the at the drive-in noise for a more indie rock with just a pinch of punk left. jonathon's rush-ish sounding remains the same.
.Mogwai-Mr.Beast yep, another band on their knees for my bloody valentine. however, they've lasted longer and continue to put out great music. my favorite show of 06 was them at the dame.
.Petticoat, Petticoat-Every Mother's Child another damn good local. female fronted pop/rock that doesnt grow old. expect great things to come...
.Bob Dylan-Modern Times i dont care for bob dylan. i dont mind to tell you this. however, when my roomate put this in, i couldn't help but like it.
.Camera Obscura-Let's Get Out of This Country again, haven't heard the entire album. its foreign and its twee pop. can't go wrong with that.
.Viva Voce-Get Yr Blood Sucked husband and wife combo that just wont die. good reason too, they're great!
.Heartless Bastards-All This Time just caught them live at the dame a couple weeks back. i'd happily go see them again and again.
.The Sterns-Sinners Stick Together a boston band too far under the radar. they bring back the best parts of xtc, joe jackson and squeeze. just wait...
