The stormy Midwest - picture of the tornado
Category: Writing and Poetry

I hear our area made the news out-of-state.

We are 70 miles south of where the tornado flattened the Boy Scout camp and took so many young lives.  This happened early in the evening.  Normally, the intensity of everything else that occurred last night would have made the national news.  It paled by comparison.

This is what hit Little Sioux Boy Scout camp:

Tornado 6-11-08

There were, however, tornado touchdowns both southwest and northeast of us by approximately a mile.  It was fascinating to watch the wall of water head our way and to see the tornado southwest of us drop out of the sky.  We don't have windows on the north, so were not able to see the other one from inside the building.  I wasn't about to go out on the deck to watch.

Wind and rain damages were extensive in our area, and of course in the Omaha/Council Bluffs metro area.  In Silver City, those living "downhill" were inundated and so sump pumps have been running since 10 last night.  In Council Bluffs, the damage to construction area(s) around the Google megaplex and onto the South Omaha bridge rebuild was enough to close the bridge and detour traffic a mile out.

The electricity was out for close to two hours, but we had no equipment damage as a result.  As I have said so many times, we are in the oldest building in Silver City, built in 1892.  The building stands unscathed for a reason.  I'm not sure luck has all that much to do with it.  It's brick.  It was the old bank building.  An antique safe, approximately 12' x 12', sits in the shop below us.  I think we're good.  At this juncture, anyway, we remain undamaged.  I did remember to close the windows.

Work continues to roll without a problem.  Have a great day.

Canonbridge is coming out with a new look and some interesting expansions, with more great things appearing on the horizon every day!

We are re-designing our Web site.  We think it will be absolutely fabulous when it is finished!  This includes a new blog manned by our staff and links to other blogs written by other authors, literary agents, editors and educators with ties to the industry.  The old site will come down mid-June.  The new site will go up the first of July.

As many of you know, we went from a single imprint last year to three imprints this year.  Those three imprints are Silver City Press (non-fiction), Terrier & Gecko (fiction) and Parallel Worlds (special genres).  We were very happy to be able to bring Terrier & Gecko and Parallel Worlds on board.  This, of course, required the addition of staff, and so we are grateful to have acquired the services of Lael Stalnaker and Marge Bloom to assist us with various functions.

Two new and exciting ideas about which we have been approached are still on the drawing table.  They involve the possibilities of new imprints and cover areas we have not yet touched.  Since Canonbridge is an entity that is not centred in one particular genre or field, we are pleased to work with and consider the addition of new imprints and the fresh minds of their creators.  They are both in the fields of education and study, but come from different angles and will be staffed by educators.  We'll let you know how it works out.

We are really starting to fly.  We have 11 projects in the works.  Several others are in pre-project stages (contracts have not been written).  We're looking at a phenomenal several years ahead of us.

Life's Inspirations, to be published by Silver City Press, is an anthology of stories about people who could inspire us all.  These stories were written by several individuals who live uncommon lives in the midst of us, and special people who have inspired them along the way.   Interestingly enough, every single one of these writers has a MySpace account.  You will enjoy getting to know them through this anthology, and since you are reading this from our MySpace account, it is quite likely they are friends of yours, as well.  Life's Inspirations will be released 30 June.

The Traveling Heart was initially released by Silver City Press in November of last year.  A second release is scheduled for 1 July after the completion of cover design and content changes.  This is the first book of poetry by writer Paul Wood, with a second scheduled for release later in the summer.

Lael Stalnaker takes the reader in and out and through the idiosyncrasies of relationships with Twists and Turns of the Soul.  The wide range of thoughts expressed in this book offers something for everyone.  Twists and Turns of the Soul is scheduled for release by Silver City Press 1 July.  Along with his poetry, he is known for his research in Irish folklore and mythology.  Look for his Tir Na Nog series beginning Winter 2008-2009, published under the Parallel Worlds imprint.

We have a bit of advance information on an anthology to be released mid-September.  As yet untitled, the book includes essays regarding voting, personal involvement, perceived disenfranchisement, and how to make good decisions based on a solid understanding of the issues.  World view is an important element in the process, so the writers come from other nations, as well as various areas of the country.  Silver City Press is proud to be the publisher of this work of timeless, yet timely, information.

We'll have more information for you as we go through the summer.  Have a great summer, and enjoy a good book while you're at it!
