Freehold: Beginnings Pre-Sale!

Two new tales of Freehold!

Doubled Edge by Heather Lee Fleming

Helene Bruzze is the top student at Spire, Freehold's most elite military academy. The training is intense and the competition is deadly. Trust is a weakness and friends are nothing more than tools. This knowledge has served Helene well, but now, with graduation approaching the game has changed. Former allies are now dangerous rivals vying for her rank. Despite, or perhaps because of her situation, she finds a new ally in Lucian Flaumer, a boy who is destined to one day face Helene's present ordeal if he lives long enough. Too late, she realizes the weakness she's exposed. Friendship is a double edged sword and Helene has no qualms about spilling anyone's blood.

Hardened Heart by Keith Gouveia

Life in Freehold is tough, especially for young Tamar Furrow. Growing up as the son to the greatest unsung thief in all of the land ought to have its advantages, but it only adds more pressure. He must practice every day, mind and body, so that he may carry on in his father's footsteps and make him proud. His family needs him to hone his cunning and perfect his craft for their latest heist will need the participation of every member of his rogue family.

Join Tamar as he tries to help his father secure the title of Freehold's Greatest Thief for winters to come by doing the impossible — reaching the top of the Turtle Tower and laying claim to its treasure.

Carnifex YA Submissions

We are still actively seeking novella-length (20,000 - 60,000 word) submissions for our Carnifex Young Adult line of books... just follow the same exact guidelines as other Carnifex Press releases (found elsewhere from the main page) but send ALL submissions/queries to carnifexYA (at) gmail (dot) com only, and send them care of the Carnifex YA editor, Frank Leblanc.

We are looking for something for the young adult market, whether it is fantasy, science fiction or horror... age-appropriate would be ages 10-18... we are looking for stories that don't rely on drug-use, profanity, taboos, racism, etc. unless absolutely neccessary...

Generally we need the first three chapters and a synopsis from you, as well as a short idea of what age group the story would be appropriate for and why you think your story is unique.

Carnifex Press Submission Guidelines

We have been receiving several book proposals each day, and we appreciate anyone taking the time to submit to us... we feel our guidelines aren't too stringent and we don't ask for much... three chapters, a synopsis and enough WOW! to get us to keep reading. Simple enough, right?

Unfortunately, we have been receiving stories well out of our range to release whether it is word count or the first (or second) book of a trilogy.

To reiterate: we cannot and will not read anything over the 65,000 word range (novella-length) and even this is a push, as we are more comfortable in the 50,000 word range. We are looking for novellas, not novels. On the shorter side of the word count, anything under 20,000 words is a push... again, if it is in the 50,000 word range it is ideal.

Further, we will not be reading anything that is part of a trilogy of books, as we cannot and will not commit to releasing several books unless we feel there is a market for it, and so far Carnifex Press has not been that market in sales.

We do accept snail mail submissions at PO Box 1686, Ormond Beach, FL 32175... please include a word count and cover letter with your 3 chapters and synopsis. You don't have to include an SASE if you give us an e-mail address as we prefer to contact you with acceptances/rejections that way.

Also, from this moment forward we will reject unread any novella sent that has not followed the simple guidelines we detailed (three chapters - the first three - and brief synopsis)... we have been getting the regular e-mail and Carnifex YA e-mail address filled with entire manuscripts and, in one case, an eager writer who sent us all four of his 100,000+ word books (each that length) that clogged us up for a day or so...

Sorry to be testy, but we want to use our time trying to find other gems in the slushpiles...
