PEOPLE!!! TAKE ACTION!!!

Tell Congress:  Hold Hearings on Signal International & Grant Workers Asylum

After Hurricane Katrina, billions of dollars poured into the Gulf Coast region to rebuild.

Unfortunately, many corporations used these funds to enrich themselves instead of investing in the devastated communities.  When Signal International needed workers to rebuild the shipping industry, they did not hire and train the local population.  Instead, Signal used the exploitive "guest worker" visas and corrupt recruiters to hire cheap labor.

Welders and pipe-fitters from India paid recruiters up to $20,000 for the promise of temporary visas for themselves and their families.  Upon arrival to the U.S. these workers were placed in cramped, unsanitary housing, charged exorbitant rent, had their passports taken from them, and were even physically beaten when they spoke out against these unacceptable conditions.  Their working and living conditions in the Gulf Coast amounted to modern day human slavery.

On March 6, more than 100 workers broke the human trafficking chain and quit their jobs at Signal in protest.  These workers, together with the New Orleans Workers Center, are carrying forward the struggle for justice not only for themselves, but also for all immigrant workers in the U.S. by exposing the fundamental injustices of the guest worker program.   These workers have toured the U.S. telling their stories and have appealed to Federal Government to investigate Signal International and their recruiters, only to be surveilled by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Today, Wednesday April 14th, these brave workers are starting a hunger strike to demand action from our elected officials.

You can help!  Please urge your Representatives in Congress to hold hearings on Signal International and to grant asylum to the workers.

Send a letter to the following decision maker(s):
Your Congressperson
Your Senators

Below is the sample letter:

Subject: Investigate Signal International & Grant Workers Asylum

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

I recently learned of an alarming case of employer abuse that urgently needs your attention.

Signal International has been using unscrupulous recruiters in India to lure workers to help rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. Welders and pipe-fitters from India paid recruiters up to $20,000 with the promise of temporary visas for themselves and their families. Upon arrival to the US they were placed in cramped, unsanitary housing, charged exorbitant rent, and were had their passports taken and were physically beaten when they spoke out. Their working and living conditions in the Gulf Coast amounted to modern day human slavery.

I urge you to hold hearings on Signal International and their recruiters, and to ensure the workers can remain in the country legally while their cases are heard.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

Boise Music Festival Experimental Music Fest 2007!!!

REPOST FROM TAO!

Can you believe it? Nine months have passed since the first Boise Experimental Music Festival (BEMF) last year, which is still archived at www.boisemusicians.com/experimental. Now, get ready for BEMF 2!

Last year's festival was a complete success relative to similar festivals across the country and around the world. It was so well received, that the word spread to musicians all over the world, who have subsequently expressed interested in performing at the second annual version of the festival. This is great news and will certainly break new ground yet again in placing Boise, Idaho on the world map of experimental and avant-garde music. So, BEMF 2 will now be an international event if all goes as planned.

BEMF 2 will again be held at Visual Arts Collective (VaC) here in Boise, April 26 - 28, 2007. VaC has proven to be an excellent venue for avant-garde art and community gatherings. A special thanks goes to Anneliessa and Samuel Stimpert, the owners, for supporting the festival again. Much of the success of last year's festival was due to their endless support and fabulous venue. BEMF 2 will kickoff Thursday evening (April 26), continue on Friday evening (April 27), and then feature all performing musicians on Saturday afternoon (April 28), continuing until late night. More details at a later date.

Because the festival will be open to other musicians around the country and world, ther will be modifications to the performance criteria slightly in terms of the experience, style, and caliber of performing musicians. Last year there were some performances, though very professional and by experienced performers, were not an optimal fit within the artistic and long term vision of the festival (mainly in terms of genre, style, and approach). This was intentional, because the festival itself was an experiment, and We were testing the waters for what was possible here in Boise.

BEMF 2 will take it to the next level and feature very prominent and defining members of the international experimental and avant-garde music community. To ensure that the festival achieves this level of representation, there is a appointed review panel to approve and help decide on the final list of performers for the festival, because undoubtedly there will be more submissions than there are available slots. We will accommodate as many as We can. However, We will also have some performance slots for "emerging experimental artists," to feature new talent and upcoming artists in the experimental music scene. The festival now has the potential to feature some of the most innovative, fascinating, and creative music art in the industry, music that is very rarely experienced at typical venues open to the public.

To get the festival planning started, we are announcing a "Call to Musicians" for the 2nd Annual Boise Experimental Music Festival. Please send this to anyone and everyone who may be interested in performing at the festival.

Performance Submission Process

1) Prepare the following information:
Your Name
Your act name (if applicable)
email and/or phone number
Website (if available)
A brief description of your music
References: a list of other festivals or major performances in your music history (those that would be more consistent with the experimental/avant-garde genres)
A CD-R or sample mp3s (no more than 6MB of attachments) of your work, in "LIVE PERFORMANCE" format only, representing what you sound like at a live performance

2) Send the above info via one of two methods:
Email your name, act, email, website, description of your work, and references to and upload MP3s (your_name.mp3) to
http://www.box.net/browse#folder4104981
(user name and password are "BEMF")
OR
Send all info (printed format) and MP3s (on CD-R) to
Krispen Hartung, 1810 W. State Street #226, Boise, ID 83702

There will be additional BEMF 2 updates in the near future, with more details on the event, call to sponsors and volunteers, etc. We also plan to finalize the performance schedule no later than March 30.

COP NEWS!!! FGFC820 Review in Virus Magazine

FGFC820
Urban Audio Warfare

Label: COP International

Listening to FGFC820's debut, "Armed Audio Warfare", is like renewing your faith in industrial music. "Armed Audio Warfare" is a collection of new harsh industrial tracks that display an acute awareness of the old school. It's the type of debut that is designed to stimulate the faithfull while gaining converts.

Rexx Arkana's distorted vocals sound like they are crawling on their hands up and out of his esophagus on "Perfect War". While Dracos' relentlessly perky orchestration of samples has my foot spastically tapping along.
There is a sound of a battle being fought in the distance, a bell chiming, while a piano is playing a beautiful melodic piece, then a vocal sample of an elder British man declares "I have become death, the destroyer of worlds".
Welcome to FGFC820's "Urban Audio Warfare", where catchy beats weave their way around dark melodies while the vocals recount society's worst characteristics. It's a balance of battery acid and Swiss milk chocolates.
As a perverse as it may sound, when I hear a sample of an air raid siren and an authoritative voice say "Achtung!", I want to dance. Maybe it's because I'm expecting to hear Wolfsheim's "Now I Fall"?
But then a choir of damned children straight from the Omen or Exorcist begin to sing a series of la's, and I still want to dance. Because despite the overt message of hopelessnes in the lyrics, the song is carried by a buoyant static beat. Samples and themes from horror movies are staples of industrial.
Recently Leaether Strip covered the theme song from "Halloween", but you can find horror samples going back to the early music of My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult and Skinny Puppy. There is a tradition of horror in industrial and FGFC820 navigate through industrial with aplomb. Otherwise you might ask questions about why military and horror samples are mixed?
But since FGFC820 know both are industrial standards, they know they can mix both and add a danceable beat underneath. No questions asked.
This is also why static crunchs can take a drum and bass interlude in "World of God", or why the rave like instrumental "Resolution Number 4" wouldn't sound out of place between X-Marks The Pedwalk and Underworld, or why "Anthem" is as easy to sing along as "The Addam's Family Theme" but allows the beat to be carried by a military marching band. FGFC820 understand industrial, and understand that they can manipulate the sound as long as they retain the framework. The framework allows the music to mix samples or offer danceable or pop beats.
This is what FGFC820 exploits to the fullest on "Urban Audio Warfare's" final song "GBA". Establishing itself with a catchy dark elektro keyboard interlude, the song gives way to a cheering crowd, before adding a slapping beat, which becomes the rhythm, then a a child recites the pledge of allegiance, then the loop of the crowd reenters.
This is all before the vocals. It's hard to imagine that such an array of things could work, that so many samples wouldn't topple the song. But the slapping beat and looped keyboard interlude are enough of an industrial framework to unite the whole song. Which means the band can shift from samples of George W. Bush to a child reciting the pledge to a cheering crowd or Rexx's distorted raspy vocals and the song doesn't topple. It's too firmly rooted by a strong industrial foundation to falter.
FGFC820 unite the defining aspects of industrial with a varied set of orchestrated samples. Allowing listeners to believe they are hearing something familiar in the new, and something new in the familiar. Making "Urban Audio Warfare" a very promising debut.

Many many many thanks to those that came out to the show. We really really really appreciate your support and your love. We couldn't and wouldn't be here without you. Much love to you all.

Apparently we have been played on the local station X96 a few times on the local show and I've heard throughout normal rotations at other times. Though I haven't heard a single drop of us either way.

Don't forget babies that the 22nd of November is out last show for quite a while, so come out and see us at Club Vegas on November 22nd with our good good good friends, Redemption!

See you around world. Spread the word... start a revolution!

Until that day
Cheers!
