Ballooning
Current mood: excited
Category: Writing and Poetry

It's been a while since I've posted a blog and that's because it's been a while since I've written anything of any consideration. Also, I've been a bit aloof, but things are better now and I promise to get in touch with a lot of people very soon and I apologize for being so selfish as to hide away from the world, hehe. Anway, my purpose of posting. I wrote a poem a few months ago in a notebook apparently and so I typed it up and I want to share it with you. I was watching a spider and began thinking and comparing myself to a spider and ended up with this.

Ballooning

What happens when the wind takes a spider's web?
Is he free from nature?
He finally finds his defiance in flying—
even if only by nature's device.

Then he falls.
Returns to the routine,
drinks the insides of another caught
in all he knows to do
(other than sleep and the universal
need to reproduce) and he remembers.

How he came to be,
and how he came to be
where he was before the wind blew—
and it is marvelous,
because he knows they are the same.

I welcome any comments and thoughts on this poem, I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.

Free Chapbook Anyone?
Current mood: happy
Category: Writing and Poetry

Hello, most of you know that I have written a chapbook.  I have sent out a few, and now I want to send out 25 more, for free.  All I ask is that you fill out the reply card I'll include in the envelope.  The first 25 people to message me with their address get a free chapbook.  Okay, I'm off.  I'm visiting D.C. and I must now go out into the city.  Hope everyone has a good day.

Poetry is Like Piano
Current mood: accomplished
Category: Writing and Poetry

Writing poetry is like playing the piano if no one else around knew how to play "properly." That may sound a little confusing, so allow me to explain. Imagine everyone who knows how to play piano is whisked away to some euphoric haven and you are left behind with a desire to learn the instrument. You’re probably thinking that you will just read a book or watch a DVD. Well, let’s also assume that whatever takes them away also destroys all those materials in front of you. All you have is a piano, a desire to learn, and the recordings of all your piano predecessors.

This situation would probably lead you to pressing keys to discover what "sounds good together." You realize you can mimic some parts you hear in recordings. You mimic, and then create variations of what you hear. Then you probably try to play the opposite of what you hear. Soon you begin to play your own music that is simple at first, but as you play more and compare it to other’s music, you learn the nuances of the art and develop your own style. You play in multiple genres and all on your own. You have resurrected a dead art; applaud yourself.

Think of that when you write poetry. A poet is only as good as what he teaches himself to learn from others. Approach poetry with the mindset that there is no one alive who knows how to write poetry the "proper" way. Poets must take the time to learn how to write poetry and that is from taking all that can be from others and from intuition. Reading, writing, and reading about writing poetry is one of the best way to learn how to write poetry. Many of those before me say to learn the rules, and then break them. I say there are no rules, no nets, only those that you set for yourself. Write freely, write what you feel, write for others to feel, and write well.

   1. Find a line in a poem you like that addresses a person. If you can’t think of one, use the line, "today, I saw you from a distance" from Ted Kooser’s "After Years." What are the implications? Who is speaking, and to whom? Why is this person seen from a distance? Why doesn’t the speaker go to the person he or she is observing?
   2. Imagine an object that you associate with a person. Now imagine that person dies in a terrible accident and the object is put away in storage. Ten years later, you come face to face with the object. How do you feel? What do you remember feeling?
   3. Think of a mundane, every day event, or task such as blowing your nose, brushing your teeth, flatulence, or a cough. Write a poem centered on it. Make the ordinary, extraordinary. Maybe the speaker in the poem focuses on it, maybe the other characters.

There’s Nothing You Can See That Isn’t Shown
Current mood: happy
Category: Writing and Poetry

This date has been a tough time for me over the past 4 years.  I suppose it was only fitting that I woke up this morning with tears in my eyes, but this time it was different.  When I woke up after a dream this morning, I was smiling.  Today is normally a sad day because it is the birthday of a very dear friend of mine that was also once my girlfriend.  Alessandra Shauna Hall was killed in a car accident July 7th, 2003.  The past couple of years I got plagued with depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and bitterness toward the world on this day and the end of June and most of July.  This year is different.  It’s the first year that I want to celebrate with her, because I know she is still inside and wants me to be happy.  I had a dream last night that for some odd reason a lot of my old high school classmates, Becky, and I were working on some project in a large room with a teacher I’d never seen before.  The room had a lot of tents, we were separated into groups of two, and each group had a tent.  We all sat out in the open on the floor with laptops and worked on some project.  Well, Nai-Jeer and I were in a group and we talked about what was going on in college and stuff, and then I walked around talking to people in other groups.  I stopped and talked to a few.  Well, then I came to Shauna and Becky.  The two things wrong with this is that 1.  Becky didn’t go to my high school, and 2. Is the obvious thing.  Anyway, the two were getting along well; they talked, laughed, and joked.  Then I went into my tent and when I came out some of the people had disappeared.  I ran to the teacher and she said time was up for the assignment and everyone was evaporating.  Well when I heard this, I looked around the room for Shauna, ran to her, and hugged her tight and said, "you’re leaving me again."  She stepped back with her little waddle and she said, "cheer up" as she looked over to Becky, smiled, and then evaporated away.  At first, I cried, then I thought of the significance, and I smiled.  She really is an amazing person, and was/is a great friend, and I miss her dearly, but I can’t let that hold me back from living.  Since the present is all we’re sure of, it’s best to enjoy it, and I think the best way to do that, is to love.

Complications of Life, Art, and Love
Current mood: accomplished
Category: Writing and Poetry

So yeah, Complications of Life, Art, and Love is complete.  It’s the title of my chapbook, I have about 25 copies printed to give away for this first print run, and I plan to produce 25 more as needed to sell online and after readings.  I’m very proud of it because I wrote, designed, and put the chapbook together all on my own, with the help of Ditto’s copy service and saddle stapler, A.C. Moore’s cardstock, and the publishing labs professional book trimmer.  Since I really enjoyed the process and realize that it’s not expensive to produce these small collections, then I am going to offer to make a chapbook for anyone who wishes me to, at an affordable price of course.  I came out this printing spending less than $50.  So if anyone wants me to make them one, contact me at kevdublin@gmail.com.

If you would like to purchase a copy, e-mail me with how many copies you would like at kevdublin@gmail.com and include your mailing address.  The cost is $5 per book and until I get an online store up, I’ll only be able to accept, check, money order, or (if you feel safe sending it) cash through the mail.

Unnatural
Current mood: sleepy
Category: Writing and Poetry

I've been pretty active again on myspace.  This is crazy, feels like I'm back in the groove.  Anywho, I'd like to share with you a poem that I included in a card I made on Valentine's Day for Becky, the girlfriend.  I also got her a cake that said "I Love You" on it and plastic flowers, because she'd kill real ones.  I had to make it back to the romantics, had started a sonnet, but it failed miserably.  Tell me what you think of this.

Unnatural
       for Rebecca

Though children are born, and men will die
Though seedlings bloom, and flowers dry
So goes the lives of all that live
And starry skies, to river's bend
Some say all that begins, must end
But then, I say, no doubt in mind
Nature holds nothing, over you and I

Ten Things-Random Blog of Random Stuff
Current mood: anxious
Category: Blogging

Ok, so yeah, all of this is just random blogging stuff.

1. Going to see Sia in concert next weekend in D.C., very excited.
2. Turning 21 in a little over 2 weeks.
3. Next week, my chapbook entitled "Complications: College Poems 2005-2007" will be printed and I will be selling them at readings and maybe online.
4. I plan to get my blog site, www.poetics.co.nr really up and running soon that will have essays, poetry, and reference links for poets.
5. I've written some fiction, it's pretty crazy.  Think A Home at the End of the World, meets Kids if you've seen either of those indie flicks.
6. I'm not wearing sox or shoes right now and my feet are cold.
7. I saw all the movies nominated for best picture this year and I would rank them as follows: No Country for Old Men, Attonement, There Will be Blood, Juno, Michael Clayton.  Glad No Country won.  Into the Wild should have been nominated in my opinion, but oh well.
8. I really liked the movie "Control" about Ian Curtis and I've listened to New Order for a while now and had no idea they had used to be Joy Division.
9. I'm trying to make myself a better person.
10. I want to finish writing mys series of sketches and finally film them before the year is done, or at least my short film.

Than you, I love you all.

To my Unborn Child
Current mood: hopeful
Category: Writing and Poetry

It has been a while, nearly four months without posting a blog and I figure it's time to end it.  I've been working on a lot of things.  I entered a few writing competitions, I'm building a spreadsheet of literary journals to submit to, and I've been trying to put together a chapbook.  I'm not been writing too much, but a lot of editing.  There is one poem I really want to share, but I'm going to send it to a journal, so I can't.  Sorry that I'm a tease, but I do have another poem for you.  I have been following the Democratic primaries like a racist cop behind a car with two black guys, a hispanic guy, and a white girl and I'm so excited about this Mr. Obama.  Two reasons, one, I think he is the type of change America needs because he hasn't been in politics that long as he's not as corrupt as some politicians and he has great ideas.  Another reason why I am excited is because he's black! If he is elected, there will be children of color (black, hispanic, asian, whatever) who grow up in the future who won't feel like they are limited in America.  Now I don't want to sound arrogant or anything, but I was a bright child.  Because I was bright, I saw how things worked.  I wasn't too interested in politics until I began listening to 2Pac and before that I figured it didn't matter because who cared about my interests? Not to mention, I could never be president no matter what I did, or at least that was my mindset and I secretly envied the young white males who when asked what they wanted to do when they grew up and responded with "President of the United States," because I couldn't fool myself into believing it was possiblity for me.  Anywho, it would be a beautiful thing for the charasmatic hopeful-eyed man with an attitude for change to become president.  Now that I've rambled on about that, it's time for the poem...

To My Unborn Child

One day, after hearing it in history
class, I want my son to come to me and ask,
"When you were my age, why
couldn't the president have been black?"
and I'll reply, "Because back then,
people didn't understand equality."

Love and Distance Triolet
Current mood: sleepy
Category: Writing and Poetry

Wow, it has really been a long time since I've been to "My-space."  Well, now faithful readers I have written a new poem, it's been a while since I've done that too.  Much has been going on in the life, way too much drama than I care to tell about.  But all is well, I have been discovering many new things about myself everyday and making possible future plans, writing music, working on the chapbook, and today I even came up with an idea for a novel I wish to write.  A novel that I hope to include this poem and many others in.  I will update you more on this, but at the moment it's all in the head and who knows how it will turn out, but I wish to write a novel with a romance element that will be based around a series of poems, possibly all triolets, or at least all in form, who knows.  Let's just say that I want to be the Black Nicholas Sparks, haha.  Anywho, here it is...

Love and Distance Triolet

Since I am here and you are there,
I'll make you be without the "t."
I'll come to you no matter where,
since I am here and you are there.
No matter distance, I do not care
just trust in me and you will see.
Since I am here and you are there—
I'll make you be without the "t."

Tell me what you think please.

Alright, so yeah, I want to beat the system
Current mood: chipper
Category: Goals, Plans, Hopes

I want to start this off by saying that it isn't spam, it's in my bloody blog, and that wouldn't be a very effective message of spamming would it? Anywho, my goal for this is to find 10 people who will honestly promise me to help me get a ps3.  Now don't get me wrong, I have no real desire to own a PS3, I want to sell it and make money.  Money, I do have a desire for.  Well, I joined this website that I am pretty sure, like 95% sure isn't fraudulent.  All you have to do is complete one offer and refer 10 friends.  Too easy? No, it's actually pretty difficult.  Think about it, you can do the cheapest offer for about $10 and you have to refer 10 people who, if they do the cheapest offer, that would only be $110, so could this insane plan be true? Well, I think it is because most people can't actually get 10 people to sign up and complete one offer.  So, then there you have thousands of people signing up like 5 people or less and not even getting, the ps3, xbox, wii, or ipod they so desire.  The offers they have are pretty decent, join Blockbuster Total Access for $9.99 the first month and I think you only need it for a month, that's the one most people seem to be doing.  Gamefly is another offer, video professor, Poster Pass, which is what I'm going to do gets you 4 posters for $8.  Another is this music service like iTunes that offers CDs to download for $10.  I might do that one, I'm not sure.

But anyway, enough of this, let's help each other out.  If you reply to this or send me a private mesage with your e-mail I will invite you to join and do an offer.  Only reply if you are serious and have $10 and a debit or credit card to spend online, and you have the time/effort to get 10 people to help you get an iMac, Macbook, iPhone, Wii, 360, ps3, MacbookPro, or Razr phone.  Then again, if you really like me, you could just join, do an offer and you don't even have to get 10 people to do this for you.  But think about it like this, if you post a blog, just like this, we can beat the system.  You'll get 10 people to help you just like I did, and each of us can do the cheapest offers and we'll all come out with something expensive for really cheap that we wanted in the end.  Thanks for the help,

-Kevin

Something I Found Scribbled on Top of a Page of Notes - Poem
Current mood: lonely
Category: Writing and Poetry

Something I Found Scribbled on Top of a Page of Notes

Mere moments in a warm embrace
brief, brushing faces,
cheeks blushing, waiting---
wondering if
there should be a decision to kiss,
meet with lips,
and fix this second
in memory
forever.

Decided not to just trash it, maybe parts of it will show up somewhere later...
