Pre-Order Chuck Palahniuk’s Next Book, "Pygmy"!
Current mood: Busy
Category: Busy Writing and Poetry

Chuck Palahniuk's next book will be "Pygmy".  It's not due in stores until May 5, 2009.  But you can pre-order it today on Amazon.

Pre-Order "Pygmy" On Amazon Today!

For those that don't know, here is summary of "Pygmy", right from Chuck:

I've just finished the first draft of a novel called "Pygmy," a dark comedy about terrorism and racism.  The lead character is a 13-year-old foreign exchange student sent to live with a suburban, white, middle-class family.  Oh, and they're Christians.  The visit is for six months, and he's one of a dozen similar kids, all shipped to America to live with typical families.

The secret truth is that Pygmy is a terrorist, trained since infancy in martial arts, chemistry and radical hatred of the United States.  He has six months to build a prize-winning project for the National Science Fair.  If he succeeds, he and his project will go to Washington, D.C. for the finals competition -- where the project will explode, killing millions.

So far, Gerry Howard says it's the best book I've done.  Fingers crossed for luck.

Last Call For CHOKE Movie Contest Submissions
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities

Chuck's new novel "Pygmy" is now being typeset.  This means we have to get Chuck the winning contestant's name of the Choke Movie Contest, so he can include it as a character in the book.  So consider this a last call for submissions.

If you participated in last weekend's contest and have pictures of you and friends holding you CHOKE movie ticket stubs, send them to: chokecontest@chuckpalahniuk.net.

I'm going to allow the weekend for people to send in photos.  But the photos must be from last weekend.  On Monday, the person who submits photos with the most people will win.

ATTENTION MOVIE LOVERS: Recruiting For A New Website!
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities

UPDATE: Read my comment below for an update.

Attention Movie Lovers!

Together with Kirk Clawes, the lead programmer on Chuck's official site, I am developing a movie-related website and we need to recruit writers!

If you fit the following criteria, then we want you:

    * Good writer, blogger, reviewer
    * Have a vast, pop-culture knowledge of movies
    * Are tenacious and obsessive and don't mind researching tons of movies  looking for specific scenes
    * Want to participate in a landmark site that will hopefully turn into something big and fun down the line

If so, then email us right away at: suitup@chuckpalahniuk.net.

EMAIL INSTRUCTIONS:

*Please include the following in your email:

    * Name, age, location.
    * History of writing experience
    * Links to examples of your writing, ie: blogs, reviews, interviews
    * Tell us why you feel you'd be right for the position.  Maybe some proof about how obsessive you are about movies

*If we like what you have to say, we'll take it to the next step, which will be revealing what the site is and even allowing you to register and take a tour of the content.

The site is currently in Beta, but we are aiming for a November 08 launch.  We just need to double the content that is currently in the database and to do this, we need more writers!

If you think you're the person for the position, contact us today!

Chuck Palahniuk’s New Horror Short Story
Category: Writing and Poetry

Hey guys,

I'm not quite sure people realize how unique Chuck's latest site essay is. So let me just say it again: Chuck is writing a short horror story, and posting the first draft of each act in these essays. Furthermore, he's explaining, during the story, why he makes the writing decisions he makes.

This is easily the coolest feature Chuck has ever submitted to the site.  Don't believe me?  Here's a sample:

From the short story "FETCH"

Note:  A decade ago, as a branding device, my editor Gerry Howard asked me to give single-word titles to my books.  My preference is to use verbs that can have multiple meanings, like "choke" or "snuff."  Especially verbs with hard "ch" or "k" or long vowels like the 'eye' sound in Fight Club or the 'ee' sound in Pygmy.

Also, there's no rule about staging every story in three acts, but for a first draft it's the easiest way for me to imagine the plot.  The first act will be approximately 2000 words, the second act 1500 words, and the final act 1500 words.  Now the story...

Hank stands with one foot a step in front of his other.  He crouches back on his rear leg, squatting low on that behind leg, his knee bent, his torso, shoulders and head all twisted and pulled back to the farthest point from the toe of his forward foot.  At the moment he exhales, Hank's rear leg explodes straight, the hip flexing to throw his whole body forward.  His torso twists to throw one shoulder forward.  His shoulder throws his elbow.  His elbow throws his wrist.  All of that one arm swings in a curve, cracking fast as a bullwhip.  His every muscle snaps that one hand forward, and at the point where Hank should fall onto his face, his hand releases the ball.  A tennis ball, bright yellow, flying fast as a cannon.  It shoots until almost disappearing into the blue sky, following a yellow arch as high as the sun.

Note:  My preference is to always begin with a physical action.  Gesture always trumps dialogue.  Verbs connect with readers in a more immediate way, coming in under our radar and resonating with more basic structures of the brain.  Because this is a story, I'll use present tense to create more immediacy, and less sense of distance between the reader and the on-going action.

Chuck Palahniuk’s October Essay, "A Story from Scratch, Act One"
Category: Writing and Poetry

http://www.chuckpalahniuk.net/workshop/chucks-essays-2008-34Fellow MySpacers!

Apologies for posting this one late, but Chuck has something special for you today that I think you're all going to agree was worth the wait.  For years now, fans have loved and coveted these essays Chuck provides the site, on how to improve your writing. But there's one aspect of his lessons that people have wished for the most:

For the next three essays I'll be presenting three drafts of a short story I'm writing for a Dark Delicacies anthology.  Folks have been asking for this kind of in-progress demonstration.  The first draft will be a day or two past Oct. 1st, but each draft will describe my process and choices -- and the finished, polished version will be out in the actual book.

Read Chuck's October Essay, A Story from Scratch, Act One

This is something incredibly unique.  Something I don't think you'd see most bestselling authors ever offering their readers.  Something so open and gracious, that it could be one of the best learning lessons from Chuck we've seen yet.

Chuck has committed to 1 year of these, so expect 2 more yet for 2008.  Also remember that, for the first month they are posted, these essays are only available to Premium Members.  Basic Members can view them one month later.  So come October 6th, this new essay will be available to all, free, for one month only.

Want To Have Your Name In Chuck Palahniuk’s Next Book?
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities

Want To Go See CHOKE This Weekend And Have Your Name In Chuck's Next Book?

Want to get a character named after you in Chuck Palahniuk's next book?  All you have to do is get as many people as you possibly can to go see CHOKE this weekend.

Is this for real?  You damn well bet it is.  Clark Gregg and I got on the phone yesterday and decided that we needed to hit the ball out of the park this weekend with the box office numbers on CHOKE.  You see, Hollywood does math a lot differently than you and I do.  And we are, right now, in one of the most crowded seasons for the movie market.  Last weekend, CHOKE opened against an $80 million dollar movie produced by Stephen Speilberg on a night when most of America was watching Barack Obama debate John McCain on almost every news channel on TV.  And this weekend, CHOKE enters its second weekend on the three days when, according to Variety, "A whopping seven wide releases" hit the theaters, making it one of the worst bottlenecks for new releases in recent memory.

What does this mean for CHOKE?  It means if CHOKE doesn't at least crack the top ten in this upcoming weekend's box office, it's chances for being around much longer are slim.  What's sad is, CHOKE is competing against movies that opened up in over four times as many theaters.  But it's still averaging better than most on a per theater basis! Why?  Because it's a great film!  And it's one that needs our support!  And dammit, that's what we're gonna do!

So Clark and I came up with a way to challenge as many people as we could to go see CHOKE this weekend... with as many people as they can convince to go.

THE CONTEST:

We need everyone reading this post right now to go see CHOKE this weekend.  But before you do, we need you to email this post to everyone you know.  Contact everyone in your address book.  Everyone you work with.  All of your family and extended family.  Everyone on your MySpace page.  Your Facebook page.  EVERYONE!!!

If you've already seen it, go see it again.  If it's more than 50 miles away from where you live, leave enough time for the drive.  If it's out of state, make it your day.

The person who gets the most people to go, gets a character named after them in Chuck's next book.  Yes, this is for real.  Clark and I spoke to Chuck on the phone yesterday, and he's completely on board with this.

People who do the organizing will be considered Team Commanders... or, as Clark Gregg will be calling you, Lord High (insert name here).  Everyone you convince to go also wins.  Fox Searchlight will be sending you an official and limited edition CHOKE T-shirt.  So again, everyone in the winning team gets something.

HOW TO WIN:

How do you prove to us how many people you convinced to go?  Well, as a Team Commander, you're in charge of getting the proof from all of your team.  That means, everyone you convince to go has to:

*Take a cell phone picture of themselves holding their ticket stub...
*Collect all of those pictures, along with your own...
*Zip up all of your teams pictures...
     *Email them to chokecontest@chuckpalahniuk.net.

We don't care how you buy your tickets.  We don't care how many tickets you buy.  We don't care if you convince half of your neighborhood to go, and the picture you send us is all of you cheering together in a parking lot before the movie theater.  Just make sure you have you stubs.  You have your count.  And you have your picture(s).

THE RULES:

This contest is only eligible for the upcoming weekend of Friday October 3rd, through Sunday October 5th.  So it begins midnight leading into Friday, and concludes with the last show of your local theater on Sunday night.  Therefore, the dates on the ticket stub have to coincide with this date range.... for you and everyone you get to go.

The people you convince to go do not have to attend the movie with you.  They can be in any state.  They can even be in Canada.  But only one Team Commander wins the ultimate prize.  So teaming up with other Commanders won't get you anything.  Everyone who decides to organize and lead has to get their own people to their theaters.

Go see CHOKE in theaters this weekend! Now, we recognize that there may be some horrible people reading this, who will be so blood thirsty to get their name in a Chuck Palahniuk novel, that they'll think of ways to scam us so that they win.  We thought about this long and hard, and we don't have any definitive way to make sure everyone is honest.  So all we're asking is, to search your heart and please try and follow an honor code.

Any sort of box office success or minor victory for CHOKE has deep, deep implications for your futures as Chuck Palahniuk fans.  As Clark put it so wonderfully in his blog:

"If the Army shows up in force tonight or Sunday, maybe it won't take another seven years to see the movie of Survivor."

It's more than that though.  Don't forget that Fight Club came out in 1999.  Immediately after that, most of Chuck's books were optioned for movie adaptations.  Yet it took nine years before we were to see another one hit theaters.  Right now, most of Chuck's ten books are optioned, with filmmakers eager to make them.  But the people holding the money purses are also the ones holding the strings.  So a lot is riding on CHOKE.

So let's go out and kick ass this weekend.  And it HAS TO BE THIS WEEKEND.  Because with the movie market as crowded as it is, CHOKE may very well not be around for a third.

Start contacting everyone you know.  Contact movie sites you know that may want to post this story.  Blog about it.  Tell people in your town about it.  Remember, you as the Team Commander has a chance to have your name in Chuck's next book!  And everyone on your winning team gets an awesome T-shirt.

But the real prize here is what we'd be doing for Chuck.  So let's go repay the guy for all the great stories he's given us.  Let's show him that we want to see more of those stories on the big screen.  Let's organize.  Let's mount up.  And let's kick ass this weekend.

*We've set up this thread for people to leave updates on their status, as well as post questions about the Contest.  I am going to be on call as much as I can in the hours leading up to Friday.

Chuck Palahniuk In Paste Magazine
Category: Writing and Poetry

Fellow MySpacers,

Chuck Palahniuk in Paste magazine, October 2008Chuck Palahniuk is in the new October issue of Paste magazine:

When a young Chuck Palahniuk pitched his novel Invisible Monsters to publishers, it was rejected because it was too disturbing. His response was to fill his next novel, Fight Club, with even more disturbing and violent events and dub himself a writer of "transgressional fiction." One of his favorite stories for live readings is the short story "Guts," from his collection Haunted, because the accounts of masturbation that met a violent end caused several of his audience members to actually faint. His worlds are shocking, but his readers eat it up not simply because they like blood and guts—his stories aim to shock like a defibrillator, to wake you up from the mundane and remind you that while terrible things can always be around the corner, you might just be able to withstand them....

IMPORTANT: We Need Everyone To See CHOKE This Weekend!
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities

Fellow Chuck Enthusiasts,

Just like the title says: We Need Everyone To See CHOKE This Weekend! If you planned on seeing it during the week, or even waiting to next weekend, or a couple weekends after that... don't.

We need you to see CHOKE this weekend. Now even. As soon as you're done with reading this, grab some friends, get your ticket, and head to the nearest theater showing it. (listings here!)

The opening box office numbers for CHOKE might not mean much to you... but in the long-run, they'll mean a ton to the future life of other Chuck Palahniuk adaptations. 'Fight Club' was a box office failure, and did not make back, domestically, what it cost to make the film. As a result, we had to wait over eight years for our next Palahniuk adaptation.

So let's not let that happen again. Let's all make sure CHOKE hits a homerun this weekend. I'm sure that, with the Presidential Debate on last night, they took a hit in their Friday numbers. So let's make up for that today and tomorrow.

I know I'm talking to thousands of you here. And every one of you can make a difference. But it has to be THIS weekend.

Go see CHOKE now. Consider this a homework assignment from Chuck Palahniuk... the real Tyler Durden.
