Desk Space

My cluttered desk is featured on Evie Christie's blog Desk Space today.

Visit the blog and you can also see the wall art of Tony Burgess, the lofty heights of Zach Well's piles of books and the simple elegance of Stephen Henighan's shutters.

Podcast interview with Andrew Pyper

My podcast interview with Andrew Pyper, about his new book The Killing Circle, is in the Bookninja Magazine today.

Excerpt:

Claire Cameron: The Killing Circle is a work of fiction. It's a story that you made up. So, why do you think anyone would pay to read the shit you pull out of your ass?
Andrew Pyper: Um…ah…you know? It…that…um…I shou…that, by the way, you…er…ah…is…is a line from the book.
CC: It's one of my favourite lines from the novel…
AP: Yes. Claire isn't being rude.
CC: …which I was hoping to steal from you.
AP: You're welcome to it.
CC: Ha ha.
AP: That is a question that we, as writers, don't ask ourselves enough, frankly.
CC: But we all should perhaps?
AP: We all should.

swishlist

My friend Lynne runs a website called swishlist, a guide to shopping online in Canada. She recently gave birth to twins (congratulations).

I am guest blogging for Lynne, while the twins focus on turning her life upside down. She said I could blog about 'whatever I want', so today I took the opportunity to lie through my teeth - read it here.

Andrew Pyper on MySpace

Many of my friends have mentioned giving my book, THE LINE PAINTER, a try because of the blurb from Andrew Pyper.

Andrew's new book, THE KILLING CIRCLE, is coming out soon, so he's emerging from the basement and now on MySpace.

Add him as a friend, here:

The source of the conflict

"To complain about the 'injustice' done by humans to chickens – those cannibalistic balls of faeces and feathers – is to call into question the entire basis of human civilisation."

-- Mick Hume, reviewing Planet Chicken in the Spiked Review of Books

The full story of my difficult relationship with chickens is on my blog.

TVs on my street

There is suddenly a proliferation of TVs on my street. Why?

To kick off the investigation, some facts:

* TVs are on the west side of the street
* All appeared between November 2-10, 2007
* 80% have faux wood cabinetry and could function as stand alone furniture
* Only one is not smashed (this, I think, shows incredible restraint)

Report - Rosedale United book club (no. 9)

Well, I think if I'd been told a year ago that I would spend an evening discussing the sex scene in THE LINE PAINTER with the book club at my mother's church, I may have flinched. Not so now. We had an intriguing and insightful conversation about we represent abstract ideas with physical gestures.

We also discussed what 'the north' means and our relationship to the vast landscape in Canada. We looked at a road map, to pinpoint Hearst, that showed Southern Ontario on one side and Northern Ontario on the other. Flip from one side to the other and the regions look much the same size.

Aaron pointed out that this is misleading. Northern Ontario is shown in a much smaller scale, meaning it is way bigger than most people think.

A map communicates much more than direction.

Tally:

Glasses of wine = 0 (tea, earl grey with a twist)
Hard questions - 6
Baby carrots = 0

This is the book club at Rosedale United Church, with a map of Ontario:

Reports of my other book club visits are here - http://www.claire-cameron.com/site/book_clubs/index.html
