Folding at Home
Current mood: fermented
Category: Goals, Plans, Hopes

...is a project which aggregates together computers on the net, like yours and mine, to form a super-duper computer; the humungous crunching power of this is then used to work out molecular biochemistry problems such as folding protein structures. This is medically important as quite a lot of diseases such as sickle cell anemia are caused by abnormally folded proteins...thus by joining the project and donating free cpu time you are helping accelerate medical progress and possibly helping yourself as well as others. DO try this at home, but careful how you fold yourself.

Folding@Home here

'Goodbye' magazine launches soon....like 'Hello' mag but concentrating on deathstyles of the rich and famous. corpses and those still, just, doing the mortal coil shuffle. Exclusive funeral pix. really spiteful obituaries. 'who's next' column. undertakers to the stars articles. death tips: how to leave a good looking corpse, celebrity coffins. We are not recommending starting this magazine , you understand, just observing that it may soon come to pass. However, interested publishers can contact deathstyles@ninjatune.net

Nasty.

Had supper with Morris before he set off for Japan and as usual got treated to a bumper infocrop. Made the aquaintince of cult Japanese animation Hal and Bons

Thats the first episode, the others are about. you either love it or cant love it. I cackled my head off, tho found round ep4 it couldnt quite sustain me. But it is superb.

Watched 'Freedom Writers' , true life story of a US school teacher bringing literature to her resistant ghetto youth class. An inspiring story but UNBELIEVABLY clunky cliched cheesy hollywood. Pass.

Morris says Flight of the Conchords is the new Mighty Boosh, or at least very massive. yall probably hip to this one but what the hell txt is cheap and this is a classic: 'Business Time'

This weekend was Coldcut JVJ at new festival Guernsey Live, the first festy of the year and good fun...a full tent thanks to the Editors. Thanks to those who came and said hallo and posted. Just before our set found a bunch of random liggers in our personal Coldcut tent seemingly polishing off our rider without offering so much as a blowjob, a regretably common occurence. Just as I was instructing our hospitality person to eject them, recognised Vince Noir of the said Boosh. Backtracking hastily, got this pic which is blurry but cool

Lovely bloke ( though character-wise personally I-dentify more with Howard Moon and his cream poetry). And ace mackeral fisherman, it transpired. Link here is video director Tim Hope who is a Coldcut mate and also does video projections for the Boosh.
LOVE the MB absolutely the best thing since the Young Ones imho, tho it is just possible that the 3rd series wasn't quite as dope as the first 2. They will of course be headlining the Big Chill this year where i wont be for the first time for years as Ibiza is calling...dates soon...VJing with 4YourEye.

Vince -aka Noel- was there with Dee Plume's band Robots in Disguise which

(Should anal retentive be spelt with a hypen?)

leads me onto the topic of ROBOTS. Certainly the next big thing, especially MUSICAL robots. Check this out...
letsmakerobots here

Play the first vid...stick with it, it takes a while to get going but is wicker.

Feel a Coldcut collab coming on with that shit...Boom...or at least Thwack Tick Tick ningningning.

Would there be any interest in a ltd edition Coldcut drum robot like that? £100? answers to this blog.

Heres a scary and astonishing bot...

I love that bit where it skids and NEARLY goes over but somehow recovers like a raver on acid tripping and turning it into a move.

The US do have gun toting bots, but had to retire a load in Iraq before they got used because ..uh..."the US Army's Program Executive Officer, Kevin Fahey, who reportedly said that there was an incident where "the gun started moving when it was not intended to move". Quite. Next stop: Terminator. What was scifi is now scifact. When i die I'll leave my body to Science Fiction, to fight back.

Top of the Bots...heres another groovy one...reassembles itself when kicked apart...in a chilled fashion...thanks to Brian Kane of EBN for this..

Space...the Vinyl frontier. Ask Raj who is now storing my records. Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic has taken $30 million in bookings for flights to start in 2009 @$200k a flight to fly weightless for 6 mins. I always thought he was quite cool, but mate COME ON...at this stage you have to make a project like that carbon neutral at least and better environmentally neutral ie replace the fuel you use which is colossal. He's also been running some sort of a contest for ideas to stop global warming , which twinned with Galactic suggests advanced schizophrenia to say the least. A quick perusal of the site turned up no mention of environmental considerations... http://www.virgingalactic.com/

On a more positive tip, genetics mega genius Craig Venter may yet save the world by building bacteria which eat CO2 and produce fuel. Dont tell the Gov or the 4x4 posse that tho...theres still a way to go and we NEED intelligent Energy and pollution control anyway NOW.

This talk by Craig is pretty inspirational:

Gets my vote.

Tho as one guy points out, Mr Venter is in some ways the most dangerous guy on the planet...if you thought GM foods were scary, using the tech he is developing- has developed, eg DNA synthesis- we are entering the era of designer genetics applied to everything. Being able to make and modify living things is the goal of Synthetic Genomics. New lifeforms, immortality, radical body remixing...the electronics era is fading out into the biotech era and the mind bogles.

So, a key tipping-point race could be Peak Oil vs Synthetic Genomics. Peak Oil is a phrase to desrcibe the point at which Oil production peaks, ie the real beginning of the end for Oil. This may already have occured, if not it must soon. No major new oil reserves discovered for 30 years, and boy have they been looking, and with the best kit. Nada.
WIthout oil, we cannot feed even that part of the world population we do feed...Oil is the mainstay of modern agriculture, the essential resource for fertiliser, pesticides, and farm machinary. This is why rice prices in most of the world have doubled in the last year which as you can imagine people are not happy about....

two essential docs on this subject are Crude Awakening

and The Power of Community-how Cuba survived Peak Oil. I'm off to Cuba, me. They sorted it.

This is a rambling post, sorry.

Come down Pete Tong, new head of Music for resurrected film company Hammer Horror. First offering 'Beyond the Rave'...you could not make it up...we wish mr Tong well in this terrifyingly appropriate musical post.

Bigup to disarmucl.com

a campaign to get UCL to offload its armaments shares. The UK being no2 seller of arms in the world natch. you know who no1 country is, dont you. Clue : the 2 countries often work together on ..uh..arms selling promotional activities.

Coldcut news flash: we can now reveal that super producer Dave Switch aka Solid Groove will be working closely with us on the new Coldcut album. We loved his work on True Skool and basically it should guarantee a banging result for all, Forward my selector. Big Thanks to Ross Alan for the intial connection and Ninja outernational Dom Smith for piloting us in with that. More soon...Dave is in LA and is on it AS OF NOW.

Lets end on a smoking piece of music found by Morris, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
I cant embed it but its Here

"Solutions are not the answer"- Dan Quayle
Category: Dreams and the Supernatural

Wah.
The insight of US leadership is truely awesome, frighteningly so. I would never imagined Obersturmgruppenfuhrer Quayle to be a man of such pure Zen intelligence. What does it all mean? .
I don't know, but as Harold Pinter observed in his laser-like Nobel prize analysis of US dictatorship, America plays a 'brilliant, even witty' game of world domination. The term 'witty' ties in with my theory of 'Hilarious Dictators'...our rulers don't -as we comfortably may assume- lack humour, but are in fact great comdians, directing the global tragedy with enormous enjoyment of the surreality of suffering...the huge joke that we are all just too fucking stupid to actually wise up to the reality of control , let alone change it, is not lost on them. They are , quite literally 'having a laugh'. We- that is the seemingly tiny % of the population awake enough to understand a little of the true nature of the performance - are in some sense their audience. This is a sick scenario and needs to be reversed. Are you in? out? in?out ? WORSE: what if the hokey cokey actually IS what its all about ?

The whole Pinter piece is available here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GY2Z27Y-HJE

actually lets have it right HERE

now i'm getting a little more fluent with all this .
This is , imho, essential viewing esp. the 2nd half where he warms to his theme.
Too ill to fly to Stockholm to accept his award, Pinter delivers the full 45 min speech from his wheelchair, upright , without notes, and without a single hesitation or um or ur. Even makes me feel somewhat proud to be English, white and middle class...a rare feeling to be sure. At least one of our number can deliver a good punch straight to Babylon head from time to time.

OK, so its not new. Well , its news to me. Inspiring. Thanks to Raj Pannu, Coldcuts live scratch DJ, for turning me on to that.

Well, this is quite good fun. For me, anyway. How are yall doing? read this far?
Expect music playlist here to change. Some Coldcut old gold ('Goldcut' to anticipate our greatest hits album if there ever is one) , And why not some random good tuneage from time to time? Once more, Raj turned me onto 'All day Breakfast' by Anticon's Jel. Am uploading this now. Flipping love this track...that stab is so nextfat. (nextfat is a next, fat phrase, innit?).

Lets pack one more in. Friend and VJ Minusbaby is a reader of this blog and sent me this clip which is lush enough to share. Thanks mate!

Loving that. Heh, maybe it could learn to scratch. Actually, my cat Monty could scratch...just not records, more my legs, though it did get on the decks from time to time.

Time for din dins.
Saw Stella today , on the way back from Goa. Sweetheart! BOOM! Missing you.

The story continues...
ONE LOVE TO ALL.

I don’t have much time, please blow my mind quickly
Current mood: chipper
Category: Pets and Animals

Back from party in Vienna for CG company Friendly Fire. Good. Biggup Patrick alias Austrian Dave, and Thomas. They said they could help out on some CG animations ideas I've got so that could be cool.

Took in plenty of Art at Belvedere and Albertina museums esp. Klimt and Oskar Kokoshka. That guy Klimt had the right idea. This one

titled 'Sea-serpents I/Girlfriends I' is boom, not only the title.

You know, there is a deeper Knowing that comes from knowing you don't know.
No?

Kokoschka was a dude too, his aim " to capture the immortal in transient form". I liked these phrases of his too:
"Man's unceasing political struggle to become human"

"A creative man has to find out what darkens the human mind in order to liberate it"

(good excuse for being a bad boy/girl)

Last week saw 'Son of Rambow' with my son Ki. A blast!  odd, poetic, deep, beautiful, stirring, fun, loving. am allergic to 90% of Hollywood product at this stage, this UK film had a totally different feel. no sex, not even any romance, no violence except a bit of slapstick... subjects looked at - and from multiple angles- included family relationships, generation abyss, religion, school, filmmaking, friendship, being cool, being French, being alive. To me it signposted opening up a whole, much needed new area of conscious family cinema. Large thumbs up from both me and Ki.

Oh, NO, I'm late for my relaxation class. Just time to upload an image of pain. Is it wrong?

Last info blast...finally posted the whole of 'A Tribute to Robert Anton Wilson- Coldcut, Mixmaster Morris, Alan Moore, Ken Campbell, Bill Drummond' which we did last Jan at the QEH South Bank. A psychedelic obituary said to have a religious quality by some present. Alan Moore's contribution is particularly good. RAW was the author of 'Illuminatus' and a key freethinker. Check it out for some positive metaprogramming. The quality is OK, 2nd half is better as you can here the voice better. Stream or download the full thang. Enjoy.

Also we should soon be able to announce some hot news on the new Coldcut album.

Off to Vienna on Fri for a gig.

Now, heres a poser. I like a subvert and Adobe Nose job as much as the next hed, but...can this pic be genuine? I guess not. Pity. Or?

fullspectrumromance
Current mood: voluminous
Category: School, College, Greek

Back from great gig in Paris for Ping Pong’s 10 th birthday party. DJ Oof aka Fred Elalouf is the main man at PingPong and has, let it be known! been largely responsible for making Ninja and Coldcut much larger in France than we used to be...thanks and respect.

Am once again resolved to do more blogging. You have been warmed.
Stream of consciousness with an edge of wantonness.
 Heh, Ecovisonaries...watch out for Neuromarketing.
Watch this: Coldcut, makers of funky things for you to play with, are designing new tools for FSR...Full Spectrum Reprogramming, the next step beyond Neuro Linguistic Programming. Yes, words are powerful...but a picture is worth a thousand words, and we deliver 25 or more pictures a second. Hi bandwidth though our amped up brains can handle it... But that would be mere Neuro Visual Programming... FSR uses ALL available sensory inputs to multiplex the data input across the full perceptual spectrum...Sound and Light, Synthetic/Real/Music/Noise/Language/Words/Images/Footage, with TasteTouch soon come.  Expand your mind and your ass will follow. Uh...no..maybe thats not really want we want. We’ve got enough expanding asses as it is...well, you know what I mean. MOVE your mind and your ass will follow, thats better. You read the term first here. Full Spectrum Reprogramming.

Or, maybe we’ve just come full circle, again, to that thing called

life.

In other news, that hero of ambience, Mixmaster Morris, came round to Tantric Towers recently and dropped off a load of great new music, such as albums by Sinbad (classy West london broken beat touches pop successfully), Quiet Village (post lounge mellow smile music), Little Dragons (sublime Japanese female vocalist glitch souljazz). (Modesty and the still just extant copyrigh laws forbid me from distributing these right now but check em out) .
Then Morris cooked sensational Indian veg food with poundshop ingredients for 8 people. THEN he podded me another shedload of great musical and other videos. Now, lets see if I can embed one of these, a truely splondiferous clip: Yusaf Lateef doing the Robot,
here

The quality’s dodgy but it still rocks eh?
And it’s late so I think I’ll leave it at that for now.

Happy Birthday Coldcut!
Category: Music

In January 1987 a pair of young producers/radio DJs released "Say Kids What Time Is It?" and introduced sample-based music to the UK charts. Twenty years on Matt Black and Jon More aka Coldcut are still going strong.

To celebrate this momentous anniversary, Coldcut have decided to take one track from 'Sound Mirrors' every month and release the unmixed stems that make up the tune to the public at large – for any use they wish. There will be a remix competition with fabulous prizes (though we haven't decided what yet) and there may even be a remix album if the standard is good enough. But beyond that, the idea is to let people do whatever they like. As Matt Black puts it, "Let the data be free!" Coldcut are keen to embrace the open source ethos and the best of the internet and are offering the parts on a simple basis – you can use them for what you want as long as its non-commercial; if you want to use them in something you're going to sell, get in touch and we'll work something out. So there's your 20th birthday present, one tune a month in all its bruck-down stemmy glory. Go forth and multiply it…the first installment of parts available here
