THE RED CROSS AND EBONY CHUNKY LOVE
Current mood: blessed
Category: Life

Hey Guys,

I must tell you that this has been such a great year for me personally and professionally. Last year was a very trying time for me. There are still a few trying moments now, but not so crazy. Somehow, life has a way of working itself out. It is true what my mother's friends would say " ..and this too shall pass." I have been blessed with a great career, and I have some really great friends. Many of those friends believed (and still believe) in me even when I doubt myself. EBONY CHUNKY LOVE: Bitch Can't Get A Date!, like my friend Angela Forrest once said to me, has been something that has changed and saved my life. It has touched so many people in so many different ways.

Tristan Renteria, the director of the documentary, approached me with a way to not only help others but also ourselves. We have joined forces in bringing the DVD of the film to as many people as we can, but we are trying to help people along the way. We have decided to use the film to help fundraise for organizations that need some help.

It is so simple if you choose to help. You get the satisfaction of helping people, be entertained, and not to mention, help us continue to get the word out about the documentary. Since the hurricanes are blowing, we decided that the Red Cross is the first place that we are going to do this "PAY IT FORWARD" moment. As the year goes on, there will be many other organizations that will be included, but help us get it started.

CLICK HERE to help the AMERICAN RED CROSS, and let us entertain you and try to help out the rest of the world.

P.S. If you have a suggestion for an organization, feel free to contact me and we will try to add them to our list. We have a few organizations that will be unveiled later on this year.

Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities

For everyone that has been asking me about the DVD availability of the documentary, EBONY CHUNKY LOVE: Bitch Can't Get A Date! It has finally happened. The project that began 4 years ago as an insane pipe dream of two friends has truly blossomed into the penultimate moment in both of our lives.

L. Tristan and I want to announce that you can now pre-order your own copy of EBONY CHUNKY LOVE directly from us through my various sites, comedydaddy.com or myspace, as well as, Amazon. If you come to our site and purchase through us, you will have a limited time to download the remaining footage that still remains from my original one man show. You will hear some of the stories that did not make it to the film for discussion. It was worn down during the making of the documentary. You can download it, and watch it on your computer or ipod. This is a special gift from me to you, but you better hurry because it will be up for a limited time only. I hope you enjoy.

BE NICE
Current mood: blessed
Category: Life

It has been a while since I have written something. Needless to say, I have been extremely busy and under a lot of stress. To not bore anyone with details, it was really an intense week. However, in the middle of this craziness, I participated in an amazing project back home in Texas. I was the emcee at a fund raising brunch for EQUALITY TEXAS. A fabulous organization that is fighting for the rights of our LGBT community in my old home state.

It is really strange when you go to these things and are treated like a celebrity in the eyes of people, because of what you do. I'd be lying if I said that I do not appreciate it, and to some degree, it would be great if we ALL could get the same treatment. Such is life, and I am not looking to trade. However, no matter what the job, I still put on my pants one leg at a time like everybody else.

I went to the event to have a good time, and use the silliness that God gave me to help out my peeps back home. In return, those folks treated me like royalty. For others backstage, it did become a trying moment, because the idea of true charity and celebrity may have been in question. That is such the P.C. way to describe some of the things that I witnessed.

However, it all worked out for charity. Later in the week, I feel like the universe repaid me for my act of charity. As I said before, it was a stressful week, and it ended with me in a bit of a pinch. I visit my credit union from time to time, and the four women who keep that place moving love my visits, because they knew me as the hospital clerk with a dream. The folks who knew me when my new reality was just tales of comic whimsy. They live for all of the celebrity and inside stories that they get from me, because of my job.

My pinch was in the place of finacnial embarrassment, because someone with my JOB should be expected to not have that stress. Needless to say, the delicious recant about my Texas weekend with the first hand celebrity dish that I had, changed my life forever. With the stroke of a pen, my financial pinch turned into something so much more manageable. This is what the goddess of that place said to me: " It was so easy to approve you because you have ALWAYS been so nice when you were a clerk, and even nicer now that you have your, big, fancy, new JOB! " Sometimes, I feel like I am still the same clerk with a groovy new job. Even Suze Orman would approve of the magnitude of financial relief just being nice has brought me.

I guess the point is, you never know the hows and whens of just being nice will come back to you. My grandfather used to say being nice will get you places money can never buy. It does not really matter what your job, it ain't that hard to be nice. Don't be a doormat or a bullshitter, just be nice.

For my Equality Texas friends, I wonder how the backstage karmic energy did last week for someone we all know? I guess mine did okay. Thanks again.

Hey Guys,

As some of you may know(thanks to Lonnie, Larry F, and Angela F.) I am the featured subject of a documentary based on my comedy called EBONY CHUNKY LOVE: Bitch Can’t Get a Date!. It has been a blessing to really be involved in such a cool project. The movie is starting to pick up some steam on the festival circuit, and I am asking for some extra support.

If you happen to have any friends or family in the Seattle or Baltimore areas, please tell them to catch the 7pm screening on April 13th at the 2008 Langston Hughes African American Film Festival in Seattle, or the 3pm screening in Baltimore on April 20th at the Johns Hopkins Film Festival. Click around on their websites to see about prices and locations.

The director, Lonnie Renteria will be attending in Seattle, and he will conduct the Q&A following the screening. I will be doing the same in Baltimore. So come out and say hi afterwards. Please keep your fingers crossed and send any good joo joo vibes our way, because we are waiting to hear from 3 more festivals.

CODE NAME: CHICKEN
Current mood: embarrassed
Category: Jobs, Work, Careers

A couple of days ago on the air, my dear, dear, friend and host, Larry Flick decided to check a brother on the air with inside information. We were answering a listener letter during our Daily Dilemma segment, in which I attempted to contribute to the discussion of our esteemed writer. In my moment, I felt he brought on his problem through his blatant and seemingly irritating lack of judgment. During my monologue, oozing with harshness and lack of empathy towards this young man, I was stopped cold in my track by the word, CHICKEN. Larry did to me what he does on many occasions...he ROBERTA FLACKED me. Look up her Discography and figure which song. Because of time, I could not explain why it worked so effectively. He then instructed anyone who wanted to know how "CHICKEN" shut a judgmental, finger pointing, bitch down, to email me directly, and I will tell them. My box exploded, and not in the way I like. So to finally answer everyone:

CODENAME: CHICKEN

Okay you nosey, heartless bitches!!! You want to know about CHICKEN. As some of you may know, my choices of men are interesting, to say the least. I recently presented this story in my new one man show, EBONY CHUNKY LOVE: Heartaches and Hardons, because I was seeing this French guy who had a boyfriend which, is always the beginning of bad karma.

He and I maintained a "relationship" of sorts for almost a year and a half. I was fine with the interrupting phone calls that he would answer, while I would be naked in his bed. Because his boyfriend had one of those "travel the world" type of jobs, their relationship was discretely open, but the phone calls are to be answered, no matter WHAT was happening. It’s HIS relationship. This was my justification for maintaining the French Connection, hey!!!!

On what was the final day of our "relationship", he decided to smoke a cigarette on the rooftop of his building, as this sexy French man always did before we got together. Whilst I was in his shower singing, he returned to answer the phone, because his partner was calling from Singapore. He quickly closed the door to the bathroom, because he did not want to have the noise of the shower and my rendition of Jocelyn’s Brown’s, SOMEBODY ELSE’S GUY, blaring into the phone. So I toned it down, climbed out of the shower, and entered the kitchen/living area, with only the towel wrapped around my head in the faux Doris Day like turban. Hot, right?

I spy my French delight in the kitchen manhandling this whole chicken. I was standing naked and ready for fun, and he told me to ( insert Parisian accent here) "wait while I prepare ze chicken for my visiting friend, who arrives from Paris tomorrow, because he does not like to go out to eat." My response was could it possibly wait until we have sex, and I leave? He told me ( insert Parisian accent here) " you must wait, until I am done!!!"

That’s when I decided to pick up my underwear from the floor, along with the rest of my clothes, and the smidgen of self-respect that I had left, because it dawned on me that I was getting cock blocked by a chicken. Le Poulet (poo lay) was in my way. I then told him that I was mad at him for making me play third fiddle to a chicken, and then I confessed that I was even more mad at myself for allowing him to treat me like that. I had the Oprah A-ha moment naked under a turban.

So whenever I am getting too uppity with someone who is making bad choices for themselves with bad, unavailable men, primarily when it is their low self esteem that probably got them in their fix to begin with, it gets boiled down to codeword: CHICKEN, as a reminder that those of us in glasshouses, shall not throw boulders!

"Do you want more slime? Do you want more filth, Mr. Callison?... Are you happy now?"- Judith Light, One Life to Live, 1980

Also another chapter from my glamorous life. This is now two entries in a row he FLACKED me.

ONE YEAR LATER
Current mood: grateful
Category: Life

As I sit here working on my next series of performance and thinking about the Oscars, I cannot ignore the significance of today. I have been emotionally brimming for the last week or two. Last week, it got so bad that I actually had a moment on the subway platform on the way to work. Today signifies the day that I said my final good bye to my mother, and unknowingly to my father as well. As hard as I prepare to make other people laugh, I realize that all comics are prone to sadness, but it is how we choose to respond that makes us different.

While I sit here now pulling it together, more than a million memories are bombarding me. The triggers are so simple, like today, it is just the date. Some moments, it is a song, and other times it can be the silly mention of a legendary soap opera moment. My mother introduced me to the world of daytime drama, specifically ABC's lineup. Thanks to my job and my crazy host and dear friend, Larry, I have been able to meet some of the legendary actors who portrayed some of my momma and I's favorite characters. I have maintained as much of a good facade, because honestly who wants to hire or work with a crying comedian? That is too Fellini! Not to mention, these soap divas are tiny, and to have someone my size breakdown with squeals in front of them is not a hot look for me. The restraining order is still in effect at all of the ABC studios, anyway.

It is so funny, when I think of the many lessons in life that I have learned, one of the most important came from soaps. "If you tell the truth, you do not have all the drama." How many children's lives would have been different if the maternity/paternity issues were settled from the beginning? How many murders could have been solved earlier if that ONE secret had been revealed sooner? How many lives could have been saved or changed, if only he/she would have told his/her family that he/she was still alive? In some instances, I think that my mother unknowingly helped change my life.

I know there are many people who may not have fond anecdotes of their parents and/or other family members, and those who do not have relationships at all with them. Believe me that there are several motherscratching numbers of my relatives that can suck it. Not to mention, every moment with my mother was not all Hallmark and stuff. I remember my last visit with her in the nursing home before she passed, and the feeling of knowing it was my last time to see her alive, so I said good bye then and told her to not worry about Daddy. Thank God and my momma, I saw the truth in the moment and acted on it.

Watching soaps with her was not only my escape from the hot summers of Texas, but a chance to get closer to the woman who also taught me the true punch and power of a solid one liner. And for today, I choose to remember her as the woman who perhaps indirectly gave me the best lesson of all about the truth. So in honor of my mother, go live in your truth!

P.S. If you are in the New York area, and you are a socially conscious, psychotic ABC Daytime fan, and in the New York City area, perhaps you should CHECK OUT THIS GREAT EVENT!!!!!!!

Thanks to Larry's K.I.R. (Keep It Real) moments with me and You Tube, you too, can enjoy the brilliance that is Judith Light. Meeting her is on my wish list. "TALBOT HUDDLESTON!" You will understand.
