I'm sitting here for the second night in a row watching the Grand Old Party do their best to derail the future of our country. Well, nice try, but no go. Night after night, members of the Republican Party have wasted their time and the time of their party talking trash and spewing lies. This is insulting and makes me furious. If they don't have a plan, they should get one rather than spending their time insulting their opponents.

Really Governor Palin, you think Senator Obama hasn't written any legislation? Well, I guess they haven't gotten Wikipedia or Google up there in the Great State of Alaska. That would be the only excuse for not knowing what he has done. A fifth grader doing a social studies project could have found more accurate facts. And what have you done? Ran the balanced budget of your home town over $20 million in debt? Been investigated for corruption? Denied women the right to choose to end a pregnancy caused by rape? Oh wait, you were in the PTA! You're right, that is impressive. But not in a good way.

And Senator McCain, I don't even know what to say about you. You are the last man standing in a race of the bottom of the barrel candidates from your party. Good job, you beat Giuliani. You talk about alternative fuels in the same sentence as you encourage more drilling. Americans know better than to trust you! More drilling will not bring down oil prices. American companies are not drilling to maximum capacity on the land they already have. The refiniries are not doing all they can. Why should we give them more?

I hope everyone sees this party and this convention for what it is. And if you are still unsure of how you plan to vote, educate yourself. This is the most important election of our lifetime and we cannot afford to continue down this path. If you love our country, like me and so many Democrats do, you cannot vote Republican. Look at your bank account and tell me if you are better off than you were in years past. Check our jobless rates. Check the gas prices. Ask your friends who are losing their homes, losing their rights.

We need a change, not more of the same. My heroes of the day are those people brave enough to stand up to the GOP at their own convention. The man holding a sign stating "You can't win an occupation" and "McCain is against Vets" is right. McCain has one of the worst voting records on veterans' issues. He was given a failing grade by many veterans' rights groups. A vet himself, a POW, who doesn't vote with veterans? I can't understand that.

I'd like to say I feel better now, but I can't. I won't until November. If you aren't concerned, you need to open your eyes.

No Country for Old Men

If you know me, then you know Saturday is movie night. Usually, if a person sees two movies, one would think at least one of them would have to be good. Well, I suppose with the state of the film industry at this time, I should have known better.

That being said, I saw No Country for Old Men and Beowulf this weekend. So here are my comments.

No Country for Old Men

Could some on please tell me what the fuck this movie was about? I mean seriously. I would consider myself to be an intelligent and curious film watcher. I seek out different and original films and enjoy thinking about films. However, I do not enjoy vague and unclear films which do so for the sake of being vague and unclear. That is the category where I place this film. Seriously, what was this about? A statement on the mistreatment and displacement of veterans in our country? A portrait of a crazy person? A clusterfuck? Yeah, I am not sure. Have any suggestions? Please feel free to email. (I will say that the movie was beautifully shot and superbly acted by all involved. I am not exactly sure what Tommy Lee Jones' character did for the film or why it matters how cattle are killed, but I didn't want to say only negative things. The movie was interesting; it was just such a bad ending.)

Beowulf

I am in the process of writing a paper discussing the differences between Beowulf the film ad Beowulf the piece of literature. Lucky for me, the movie is ridiculous and nowhere near similar, so I have a great deal to write about. The film has characters with the same name as those in the text, but many if not most of the similarities end there. I don't want to post my paper here so I will just say this: Beowulf did not have sex with Grendal's mother. I know films that are based on literature nearly always change some parts of the plot. But please, this was egregious. The story itself has survived for close to 2000 years. It was good in the first place; it didn't need elements of daytime soap operas thrown in to make it more interesting. Changing the end of The Firm or omitting scenes from Bridget Jones is one thing. But completely altering the plot of the oldest piece of literature in the English language to add some sexy time is insulting.

Hello all,

Next weekend, I will be making the long journey to South Beach (LOL) for Saturday and Sunday to work on a piece for my travel writing class. I will be staying in the Clay Hostel and I need some ideas on what to do while there. If you know any good bars or resturants off the beaten path or cool shops I should check out, please let me know. any art classes or funky yoga studios would also work. I am trying to write about SoBe without relaying on the typical destinations. I need something unique and different, if possible. I would really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks guys!!!

While doing my morning gossip site rounds I came across a story on Perez Hilton about the new issue of Out magazine.  They are publishing a list of the 50 most powerful gay people in Hollywood, Politics, the web, etc in an article written by Micahel Musto. There is an article about it here: 50 Most Powerful Gay Men and Women. The cover of the magazine features two models holding masks of Anderson Cooper and Jodie Foster, neither of whom are out.  Is this fair?  I really can't decide.  I suppose anyone who pays attention to GLBT issues already knows these two people are clearly out privately but closeted professionally (no matter how much you deny it Laura, LOL).  But isn't coming out a private decision?  Obviously I have not had to deal with this, so I can't speak from experience.  But I can't imagine being outed by a magazine is a rewarding and free-ing experience.  Although why wouldn't these people want to be out and proud?  Gay and lesbian people are living successful and full lives.  Would people really stop watching Anderson Cooper 360 if they knew for sure he was gay?  Would Jodie Foster get less roles?  As it is she barely makes movies anymore anyway and she hasn't played a romatic lead in years or ever actually...  Additionally, why are these clebrities getting special treatment from the media?  Why don't we see pictures of Jodie and Queen Latifah all over the sites with their partners?  Why the ban on these stories?  Their straight counterparts have their every move documented for public comsumption (Britney, Lindsay, Paris, Jake, Reese, Brad, Angelina, and list goes on and on...) Certainly Anderson planting a sloppy one right on the mouth of some dude would be a much juicer picture than Britney at a Lakers game. I guess the real question here is does the harm these people cause to the acceptance of the GLBT community outweigh their right to privacy?   And does their refusal to come out only flame the fire around their fame anyway.  Honestly, if Anderson was out we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

Its the end of the world as we know it.......

The signs that world is quickly coming to an end are all around us.  The near complete loss of original thought in film, Tila Tequila videos, peanut butter recalls, and now this...

To quote the wise Meredith Gray, "Seriously, seriously?"  First of all, these kids look like they may have actually never seen the ocean.  I know its all about exposure and reaching a different audience, but come on.  These are art school drama geeks who had a hit single. Don't get me wrong, I am a fan, I love the CD. Its original and fun and full of literary references that fly clear over the head of most of their 15 year old fans heads.  But why the need to cater to the fan base of the SI swimsuit edition? I am just not following the inspiration for this shoot.  Will this really earn them new fans? Let's all be honest here.  The guys reading this probably beat the shit out of Panic in high school and took their lunch money. I am all for bands being successful and making money and living their dreams.  But is this at the sake of their artistic integrity?
