Romance - Show some love!

As a genre "Romance" is hugely popular.  According to stats I found on theRWA website  they estimated that over $1 BILLION dollars was spent on the genre in 2007! The stats on readership are remarkable!!! The romance community can be very caring and supportive.

I want to ask the romance community to support booksellers and libraries that do special things for the genre. Link to them. Email them with a thank you. Buy from them. Whatever.

If we do NOT support these outlets then how are we to grow? So what if they have done nothing for you so far. You're a part of this community. Support it and it will eventually support you. Support it for the sake of the community.

COS has created banners for the Borders Romance Reading Room. Please take them. Link to that site. Encourage others to go there. The banners are free to you. They are on our MySpace profile and we created a cut & paste box to make it simple for you to take. The link is already included.

Yes, I know some of you don't want to show favoritism. Then link to some other booksellers that support romance. Write on your site that if a bookseller has a  special section for romance that you'll add them.

The worst thing you can do is...nothing.

The Romance Reading Room used to be on the landing page of Borders Media. Now it is buried within the site. If we can rally as a community perhaps it would show Borders how important the genre is to us. Do something! Borders puts up trailers and podcasts and author letters for free. For free to us. Why not show some appreciation and put up a banner?  A link? Blog about it? Do something!

Reading - Get them while they’re young!

Of all the media I've participated in, the WSJ, Newsweek, interviews on radio with NPR or various online shows, it is THIS magazine that gives me the biggest intrinsic reward. What is it? It's called Raising Readers and it is a magazine for kids and for people trying to encourage kids to read.
I couldn't find this newest release online. I got it sent to me by the magazine so it may not actually be released yet, but you can see a past issue here.

If you Google "Raising Readers" you'll find similar projects going on around the US. It's a fantastic idea!

Many people don't realize it but COS does a lot of work for libraries and schools free of charge. It is this fact that lead to COS being asked to participate in an experiment being done by a public library. And if this works others will follow.
The library is putting in a kiosk into the high school of a large city in up state NY. Inside the kiosk they will play book trailers and there will be ways for the kids to check out the books they find there, and they will be able to buy those books as well. I was able to find a bookseller who would discount those books when they're ordered from that school or library.

Obviously the books have to be age-appropriate and that will be determined by the high school administration. I send them a list on Tuesday and we start filling up that kiosk soon after.

It is so rewarding to be involved with children, teens and young adults. To encourage them to read. To know that we're opening up a plethora of amazing worlds and stories to them.

We've done quite a few children's and young adult videos for Simon & Schuster lately that I'm very proud of. And we have some authors like Alyson Noel and Marienne Mancusi or Thora Gabriel that ROCK at writing wonderful stories for young people. You can go to our youtube  and search "young adult" or "children" and see what we have. Check out FOUND  if you haven't already seen it!!

We've gotten so many comments on our videos that are from young people. A lot of young people have subscribed to our YouTube or MySpace. It gives me such hope for the future of books.

Reading matters. Reading changes lives. Reading challenges us to think. It gives us hope. It makes us better people.

No, we're not talking about tech books. We're talking about book marketing. Or at least online new media marketing.
At present I am in the middle of my training to be a certified Google Advertising Specialist. I've been taking the online courses. And, I was lucky enough to make an acquaintance at Google during BEA that's turned out to be pretty positive. Now I just need to find someone "in the know" at Yahoo! lol

Once I get my certification, our COS Customer Service people will take it. Oh joy!

I listened to the David Meerman Scott interview tonight and it was really good. I've met and spoke with David. He's really got a lot of good information. But he need to work on his people skills a bit. That doesn't take away from the fact that this guy knows his stuff.

And on Sept. 9th Pixel Heads Network will feature yours truly!

I will be featured on their Meet the Experts show in a couple of weeks and I'm very excited about it!

It's so great to be on a show that asks so many great questions. Their focus is on new media, so that's what we concentrated on. Book trailers and new media. 

I'm not sure that being a new media expert impresses too many people in the publishing industry. But, I do love new media and that community and am happy to be a part of it. I've been asked to do some workshops and talks at other events and I will be helping coordinate a new media event in Cincinnati next year that is going to be really cool!

In the meantime, my heart is still with books. I don't tell many people this, but I finished my first full-length novel when I was 10 years old. 250 pages, all hand written in 2 pencil! :-)  Yes, I still have it. No, you can't see it. lol

I've been asked to blog for Novelists Inc. which I am totally thrilled about! And in Nov. I will be giving talks in Seattle and Portland about book video and new media for the publishing industry. I'm speaking at the 2009 RT and I will be submitting some ideas to RWA for their 2009 event.

Aphrodisiac

I find it interesting when I run into authors who are actually co-authors. And when they are a husband and wife team writing romantic suspense about a powerful aphrodisiac you have to wonder just how sexy this book is. And it is!

Random House and the Morality Police!

Here are the facts, then we can discuss the merit, if any, of this new contract clause being done by Random House to YA authors.

Random House is asking YA authors to sign a contract saying: "If you act or behave in a way which damages your reputation as a person suitable to work with or be associated with children, and consequently the market for or value of the work is seriously diminished, and we may (at our option) take any of the following actions: Delay publication / Renegotiate advance / Terminate the agreement."

Cory Doctorow reported this over on Boing Boing and what struck me as interesting is this is someone (Cory) who has been so hugely supportive lately, doing interviews and getting media attention for books. He says that Random House is publishing the audio book of his Little Brother YA novel, but that they did NOT require him to sign that contract. Is that because there's less concern for morality with audio books, or that they just trust Cory that much? And isn't having a double standard like that a bit...well...immoral?

I can see where a company who supplies books for children would want to make sure they keep their brand protected by being very straight forward with their authors saying, "We won't publish you if you harm our brand." But a "morality clause" from an author to a publisher? Does anyone see the irony?!!

What about a morality clause saying you shouldn't plagiarize material? Is this just the beginning? Will there be other such clauses coming around the bend?

What do YOU think? Is RH trying to protect it's brand? Children? Itself? Is it right to do this? And just who will determine if an author's actions are immoral? I can see the obvious stuff; murder, sex with a hooker, etc. But what about a divorce? Is that of concern to a children's brand? I don't know.

And let's face it, it's a dog-eat-dog world out there with author or fans writing terrible reviews just to bring down another author. Will those kind of people see this as a way to destroy someone's career? Will they try to find reasons to report an author for a morality issue?

I await your opinion with great curiosity!!!

One week a month is dedicated to research and development at COS. That week is next week and I'm gearing up for it. Since I lead that team I put together material that we'll be reviewing or I will gather data sent to me by different team members and I'll make a nice little report out of that. Yes...my life is glamorous. For a geek-girl.


I am gathering all of my Advertising Age magazines, video magazines and various publishing magazines or reader's magazines. I'll sort through them all and pick out the stuff that is relevant to what we're currently working on, or if something new sparks an idea I will cut that article out and share it. As a funny little aside, my "new ideas" often are met with some enthusiastic...well...groans. LOL That may be an indicator that I have a LOT of new ideas. lol

I check out the blog PersonaNonData as usual and get some insider-type news on booksellers and publishers. I check out PW. Sometimes I even check out bookseller or publisher blogs.

Then I get to the technology stuff. I know, I know, you can hardly contain your excitement. Here's a great list of sites to monitor for those of you who are trying to follow along-

I'm sure you can imagine the excitement when it's R&D week! (Research and Development). We celebrate with lots of coffee and energy drinks!

The accumulation of this information has resulted in some great interviews. Most everyone already knows about The Wall Street Journal, but I was also asked to come in to the NPR studios for an interview while I was in NY last month. I was interviewed by TubeMogul University, Robert Scoble and Pixel Heads Network. I think it's kind of funny that 50% of the interviews I do are in the tech industry and not the publishing industry. Though, I spend just as much time watching the publishing industry news as I do marketing or technology. Go figure.

In the end I think I get off light. Andrew and Jacob are taking college courses to help us catch up with some web technology and Mike is doing online courses for stuff that makes my head spin just thinking about. Just look at www.lynda.com
and you'll see what I mean. And Webb just got a super nice, state-of-the-art HD camera that he's studying this week for a special project we're doing for Cherry Adair.

You know what they say, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." But you can teach one new media. Now I just need to teach my dog to close the door after he noses his way in!!!

This year’s PITA awards - aka The naughty people at the RWA convention get busted!

For those of you who read this blog regularly you know that last year, during the RWA convention, I had the opportunity to watch some interesting behaviors and hand out PITA awards. For those who don't know, RWA gives out Rita awards which is a prestigous award for writers. I do the PITA awards as a parody and I name people who showed some bad behaviors or lack of class during the convention.

This year, I spoke to Renee Bernard of Canned Laughter and Coffee on live radio last night to discuss the PITAs. If you're afraid you may have made my list, well....lol

The first minute of the show had some audio difficulties, but you'll be able to hear Renee and I chat about our RWA experiences.
