Everything in the world vibrates at a certain frequency. "If you take two identical tuning forks which vibrate at 440 HZ, an interesting example of resonance occurs. Strike one of the forks to produce a sound and the second one -- which has not been physically struck -- will spontaneously vibrate with the first fork" (from "The Power of Sound" by Joshua Leeds). This is called a resonant system.

Given that human beings vibrate at different frequencies, one has the opportunity to form resonant systems with other human beings. One can feel certain people, colors, and instruments that resonate deeply and others that drive him insane. By understanding the science behind resonant frequency, we can greatly enhance our ability to capture resonant systems that we interpret as synchronicity, opportunity, and romance. How?

Follow your bliss. Joseph Campbell said, "If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track, which has been there all the while waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living." This quote leaves a lasting image of a railroad track that runs through everyone's journey. The track weaves the most satisfying, successful, truthful path through life. Some people have never known the track. Others spend certain periods on track. And a rare few follow the track the whole way thru.

Here are some tips to strike your tone and get on track:

  1. Indulge in your favorite color, scent, and music.

    By surrounding yourself with great music, interesting fashion statements, and unique scents, you are more likely to capture resonant systems. This might seem obvious but remember you first gotta strike the fork before you set the physics in motion.

HEMET - Tucked away in a quiet part of town, far from where most people would expect to find it, is one of the Inland area's best kept secrets -- a full-service, professional recording studio that caters to major names in the music industry, as well as local talent.

Founded by Hemet musician and studio President Eric Galletta, 42, and Chief Engineer John Goetz, 52, Park Hill Music/Gwen Gordy Studio is the culmination of years of work and a dream spurred by Gwen Gordy, sister of famed Motown Records founder Berry Gordy.

The company's studio bears her name as a tribute to the inspiration and moral support she provided, Galletta said. He added that Park Hill Music Co. tries to give something back to the community the same way by sponsoring the Temecula Valley International Jazz Festival and the Temecula Valley Musician's Workshop.

Over the years, the studio has attracted a who's who list of talent looking to escape the grind of Los Angeles, including members of the Beach Boys, Trini Lopez and jazz great/cowboy film star Herb Jeffries, 94, who played with Duke Ellington's orchestra.

"We've had original members Carl Wilson and Billy Hinche, who was also with the Beach Boys and formerly with Dino, Desi and Billy," Galletta said. "We've had members of America and Phil Jones, who played with Tom Petty -- and NeYo, an R & B artist with Def Jam; Rita Ross, Diana Ross' sister; and Warren Haynes, a member of the Allman Brothers and Grateful Dead.

"... Martha Reeves from Martha and the Vandellas," Goetz added. "And just the greatest jazz players like Conti Condoli, the lead trumpeter for the old Johnny Carson 'Tonight Show.'

"There are too many to mention."

Love for Music

It's been a labor of love for the two music makers.

Galletta played woodwinds and percussion in the Hemet High School musical program and lettered in band. Goetz was trained as a professional recording engineer and worked for other labels in Los Angeles, Oregon and Nashville. He and a producer associate started their own label in Los Angeles in the 1980s.

The producer decided to build a studio in San Jacinto, where his mother lived. Goetz signed on as the engineer.

"We were there about two years on Main Street but basically needed a larger facility," he said. "Eric came into the picture while the first studio was being built."

Galletta said they found a house with a large workshop that would provide most of the control-room space they needed for their large 60-track mixing console and other recording equipment. After completing the city permitting process, they added on the recording studio, which can accommodate up to 30 musicians and vocalists.

The Hemet High School Jazz Band has recorded in the studio.

"The catalyst behind the studio was Gwen Gordy," Galletta said. "She was our mentor, sister, mother. She was the blue part of the flame, so to speak. Her words were, 'Just build it and they will come.' "

Acoustic Details

Galletta said the studio remains a work in progress. Its construction and acoustical design was thought out to the most minute detail, such as coating all screws in the floor with Teflon so they do not generate random, unwanted noise during a recording session. Sand provides a buffer to absorb low-frequency sound and allows the floor to "float."

The exterior and interior walls are separated by 6 inches to keep good sound in the room and prevent stray noise from creeping in, and the interior walls contain "soft" and "hard" sections to break up sound waves so they don't reverberate. The ceiling employs the same material used in theaters and movie houses.

"In a plain, large room, if you clap your hands loud, the noise just bounces back and forth," Goetz said. "That doesn't happen here."

Technology

At the core of the studio is a 60-channel Neve V3 mixing board that allows Goetz to manipulate input from up to 60 microphones.

In addition to high-tech digital recording, the studio is equipped to handle analog recording directly to tape. It also has vintage microphones and musical instruments to add warmth to recordings. A 1902 Steinway grand piano that has been acoustically restored to perfection stands in one corner.

Galletta said the music industry has shifted significantly with the advent of digital recording and distribution. Studios are putting much more effort into marketing in non-traditional ways today.

"We used to buy LPs and CDs and the delivery method and medium have changed," he said. "We're now using our mobile phones to download music. Because of the paradigm shift in the delivery system, we've been forced to seek alternative methods, such as MySpace, Facebook and imeem."

Meanwhile, many musicians are striking out on their own with homegrown recordings to save money.

"They thought they could buy a few thousand dollars worth of equipment and set themselves up in their own house or garage," he said. "Now we're getting the clientele that has done that and isn't getting the best results, not the same caliber that a real recording studio offers."

New Artists

While the studio is building a stable of artists, it hasn't had a chart-topper yet. But Galletta and Goetz said they expect that to change soon with some of the newer artists they are working with.

"We have a band from Spain called Natura that plays rock 'n' roll," Galletta said. "We have an artist by the name of Lucas Seren who's Brazilian' and sings in Portuguese. We're developing Johnny Neal, who is a gospel blues artist. They're starting to pick up steam."

Summary of "The Ultimate Philosophy"

        Every person has thought, at least once in their life, that it would be nice if there were no disease, no crime, no poverty, and/or for some other improvement in the Human condition. Since everyone has dreamed of a better world, it is fair to say that Humanity has a common dream. While no two humans are exactly the same, we are all of one race, the human race, and we all share the experience of life in an essentially identical carbon-based life-form structure. We all work for continuing survival while in this structure, and hope for a happy, safe, and good life for ourselves and for our loved ones. Therefore, everyone has a common desire for the best life attainable. "Utopia" is the word used to denote the best life attainable. Since each person has their own unique vision of Utopia, the only universally agreeable description of Utopia is, "the ability for each person to live in their own vision of paradise." Humanity should strive to obtain that ability.

        Since humans consist of both a tangible physical state (body) and an intangible mental state (mind), the way to achieve Utopia is to find technologies and methods that fully satisfy both states of human existence. With the right new knowledge Humanity can solve any problem and achieve any desired result. History has shown that anytime humanity wants to learn how to do something, such as land a man on the moon, the answers can be found if money and resources are devoted to the cause. Therefore, we should be devoting more resources toward finding the knowledge that will allow each person to live as they desire.

        Human DNA has been fully mapped and now it is just a matter of determining what each gene does so that we can manipulate the same to stop illness, increase intelligence, etc. Princeton University scientists have already genetically enhanced the intelligence of mice. Aged brains have been restored to youthful vigor in a gene therapy experiment with monkeys. Scientists have recently created a new life form in the laboratory by creating a new genetic pattern of a simple organism. Cloning capabilities are increasing. Computing capabilities are going ballistic, and artificial intelligence seems to be on the horizon. With robots, machines, computers, and other technologies beyond our current knowledge such as nanotechnology, we can have unlimited production capabilities. With genetic engineering, chemical manipulation, and future technologies we can enhance the mental state of existence. In sum, with the right new knowledge, humanity can have infinite provision for all tangible and intangible needs and wants for existence, and thereby have Utopia. If humanity recognized this reality, and devoted more resources toward knowledge, we could accelerate the pace at which we reach a better world.

        The three basic ways of interacting with knowledge, are: 1) dissemination from accessing stored information, through teaching, or from other methods of communication; 2) use through actions based on awareness of knowledge; and 3) acquisition of new knowledge from research, through experience, or from other avenues of discovery. Humanity has achieved proficient methods for dissemination of knowledge, and simply needs to better utilize the same in order to facilitate the use of knowledge. The primary method for finding new knowledge is through research and development. Less than 2% of current global productivity is being devoted to research and development. Clearly Humanity could and should be investing more in its future.

        Everyone makes a vote as to the type of world we have with their lifetime efforts, and the total of all human actions determines whether the world is like a heaven on earth or a living hell. Therefore, the pursuit of Utopia can be implemented through the consensus method. The consensus method simply involves putting a dream into words and spreading those words until a large enough consensus is created to cause positive action by society. Individually and collectively we must shine the light of knowledge on the darkness of ignorance, until we find our best. If we take such a path, at some point in the future, Humanity will have a heaven on earth, where everyone lives as they desire.

In sum, since everyone desires a good life, we should make the same a common goal,
and devote some more resources toward finding the knowledge to make it a reality for all.
