HARD SELL SHOW BROOKLYN
Current mood: excited
For all those attending the Hard Sell show on thursday, please note that there will be a record bar operating in the venue the entire night. Of course dealing in only 45s, Shadow and I have asked a few of our favorite record dealers in the New York area to participate so bring some extra spending money. Also just added New Yorks own Jazzy Jay from the mighty Zulu Nation spinning all 45s. Have fun!

Paris Hard Sell Show
To all those in Paris...Sorry Dj Shadow and I had to cancel our final european Hard Sell show. We were looking forward to it as Paris is one of our favorite cities with a great audience. However, there were saftey issues in the venue that we discovered during sound check and we couldnt risk harming anyone in the building. We are trying to figure out if it is possible to re schedule sometime in the summer. Please stay tuned.

The Album Cycle
Current mood: creative
Category: Music
Its been an exact calendar year since I started touring my latest album "The Audience's Listening." Im happy to say that it was a huge success in more ways than I could have ever imagined.
Opening World Tour
It all started on August 24th 2006 with a nice humble tour in England of small clubs. Thanks to Clyde, our driver for not killing us and to super diva vocalist Kathy Brown for selling my merch??? That was surreal! Next up, Barcelona with Keb Darge. We played Rockabilly for 1000 Spaniards until 4am, god bless em. Then on down to Singapore to buy a camera on my way to Australia for the Park Life Festival tour. I had Hymnal join me for that run. It was his first time outta the country and he killed it for 25000 people in Sydney. Nice one, Hymnal. Thanks for the buttons, Sashya. On to the Japan leg of the tour just in time to celebrate my 34th at the Soul Grand Bar in Nagoya. This bar came with a fully stocked record collection behind the bar. My man was pourin drinks and playing soul /jazz all nite. My time was short so I decided to take in the sites in Kyoto instead of record shopping on this run.
The U.S. Run
I had no time to recover from that trip because in just 10 days I had to go on a US tour with Lyrics Born, Pigeon John and Edan. I brought my man, Tom from Pimpadelic Wonderland out for visuals on this tour. This is the first tour where we executed the 'live audience video scratch' finale. We have been theorizing about it for months and it went over great. Certainly it was the first time that anybody has ever done that in the history of live performance. This tour had a great line up as well. It was fun reuniting with Good Lifer, Pigeon John again. LB tore it up of course and my man Edan did everything you could possibly do with decks, a mic, a guitar, and flowers. Dagah sounded just like he does on the Beauty And The Beat album. I documented Edan and Dagahs brilliant performances with my brilliant camera from Singapore only to get it stolen at the end of the tour along with my lap top and hard drive at LAX. No, not the night Club.
Shakira Tour
Next on the platter...Opening for Shakira for 2 1/2 months in Europe. I almost didn't get this thanks to the powers who shall remain nameless. This tour was the most challenging/rewarding experience in my life. It never occurred to me in a million years that her (non english speaking) audience wouldn't appreciate my "art school drop out bullshit." That is until they all booed me. All 15000 of them. "Shakiras people are not happy with you." A few years ago I would have left the tour without a second thought but then again a few years ago I didn't have the chance to play in front of a cumulative 350,000 people. These people deserved to hear a new kind of music just like how I heard Laurie Anderson when I was 10 yrs old at the height of Michael Jackson era. I figured a nice way to sneak my music into a Trojan horse would be to sprinkle a couple of recognizable songs around Big Break and Altitude. The audience video scratch finale didn't hurt either. By the next few shows the boos turned to cheers. "Phew, I get to keep my job." I wasn't a sexy female latin dancing singer. I was a guy with some turntables and a visual artist. Yeah, I had my work cut out for me.
LA Homecoming
Now we come to the pay off. During the Shakira tour, I get a call to play at the Disney Hall in LA for a musical visual mash up of Soviet Stalinist era material. Sounds fun, doesn't it? This is a chance to come home and play one of the most prestigious music halls in the world. What's more is Jurassic 5 canceled a headlining slot at the Hollywood Bowl later that summer because they broke up. Promoters, LA Phil, asked DJ Shadow and I to take their place and do a rendition of Brainfreeze, our first all 45s mix cd. This was a dream come true especially for me because I grew up in Hollywood and our name would get added to a long list of world changing artists. The trick was I had to practice with Shadow by day and research and build a Russian set by night. Thanks to Mumbles for feeding me inspiration for that show. I could have never done it without you. Disney was the best performance of my life. The highlight was the Rite of Spring/Star Wars mash up. I had no idea it was Star Wars' 30th anniversary to the day. Now all I have to worry about is the biggest show of my life. The Hard Sell w DJ Shadow at the Hollywood Bowl. 15000 people were in attendance. We never would have imagined 9 years ago that Brainfreeze would turn into this. Thanks to Kim Fowley for flying in from Amsterdam and Steve Aoki for doin after party damage. The DVD is coming soon, folks.
Hard Sell Tour
A week later we take that show on the road to Europe. The problem we ran into is that this set was crafted for a sit down audience and they had us playing the dance tents at festivals. "We're not going to be playing bangin' house for the next hour" explains Shadow. All good. The heads got it. I think the Japan Summer Sonic dates went a lot better. Perhaps because we went out of our way to close caption the intro film with Japanese subtitles. Nice! I went on to Korea, Israel, S. France and Helsinki. All of which I got my dig on bringing back heat for my next record. It was nice seeing Dilated Peoples close the show in Cannes. You guys are still doin' it big. When are we doin' Word Of Mouth 3? Big up to airport security in Tel Aviv for giving me everything short of a strip search. Yo, those guys do not play around.
The Wrap up
Its Aug 24th '07 and in just a short amount of time I went from starting my entire career from scratch as a solo artist to playing bigger shows than most acts will ever get the chance to play. My label had trouble figuring out what to do with me and it was frustrating at times but the fans knew exactly what to do with me. Thanks to all of you and thanks to the Shakira fans that said I opened them up to a new world of music. Big shouts to the T.M.'s: Ricky Martocci, Marciano Agabond, and Jamal Chalibi for makin sure I make it to all the gigs. Thanks to Tom Fitzgerald and Ben Stokes for Interpreting the music visually. I'm going to take a breather for a second and then I'm gonna start making new songs. I promise I wont take 4 years this time. Who knows, I might take longer. ; )
